I made some biochar once and it occurred to me that I probably released more carbon dioxide heating the up the biomass than I locked up in the resulting biochar.

What is a realistic solution to this?

We're you using a reducing kiln or something that's burning gas the whole time? If not, and you're just burning the material, then I'd argue the carbon you released was destined for the atmosphere already, you just helped it along but also locked a bit up in biochar.
