Also we expect far more from our bridges and such these days. Roman engineering pretty much just had to worry about people with some horses and carriages and the like. Modern engineering has to account for us driving 2 ton metal boxes on them all day every day forever.

Modern engineering expects infrastructure to last 50 year with bare minimum maintenance, 100 with scheduled remodeling. "Built for eternity" is megalomaniac stuff.

It's also stupid, because there's no way we're going to want that same bridge doing the same thing in the same place in 2125.

A place to meme about the glorious ROMAN EMPIRE (and Roman Republic, and Roman Kingdom)! Byzantines tolerated! The HRE is not.

RULES:

  1. No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, bigotry, etc. The past may be bigoted, but we are not.

  2. Memes must be Rome-related, not just the title. It can be about Rome, or using Roman aesthetics, or both, but the meme itself needs to have Roman themes.

  3. Follow Lemmy.world rules.

Not sure where to start on Roman history?
