Humans can sustain a large density of cats that wasn't possible in the wild. If it's a pet cat, don't let it hunt. It will imbalance the ecosystem by adding too many predators who don't depend on the prey for sustenance

I always love bringing out this good ol chart.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 month ago

Fake news. Birds aren't real.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 month ago (2 children)

so... cats are the most effective way to combat birds?

Not a lick of urban sprawl in your fancy graphic. I wonder why?

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Buildings, automobiles, power lines......

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Which is not the same as the effects of urban sprawl destroying their habitat (however this is obviously impossible to quantify)

English isn't your first language.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Thinking isn't your strong suit.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

Define urban sprawl.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Are you under the impression that being against urban sprawl is an unpopular opinion on Lemmy?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Im under the impression that saying that cats are the end of birds is asinine when all we do as humans is destroy habitat for all fauna.

Overly dramatic people who think their meat comes from a store are the same people who make this argument about cats.

Get over it, cats are not the genocidal maniacs you make them out to be, WE ARE.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Maybe letting cats out is one of the many ways we destroy habitat, and calling it out is valid?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Maybe start with the house that is burning down before putting out your match.

And stop calling out those who call you out on this crap.

By your chosen username I'd guess you are a teenager with a cat. No one is coming for your particular cat, we are trying to save birds by talking about the norm of cat owning and how that should probably change over time.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And by your comment, I assume you are delusional by accusing cats of committing genocide when we humans displace and destroy the very places birds live and feed in.

Address the real issue if you love birds so much.

It's not about loving birds for you people it's about hating cats. That is very clear to me.

Please explain how cities like Rome and Istanbul still have birds if cats are so genocidal towards them?

Their bird populations are nowhere near even endangered status and are probably thriving.

So where are the genocidal cats?

I'm really not surprised by your assumption of my username being so wrong because I expect delusional people to create an alternate reality in their minds.

Have a great life!

It’s not about loving birds for you people it’s about hating cats. That is very clear to me.

I like cats very much and cats like me. But existing within an ecosystem or society means you have to create rules that solve for larger outcomes than the scope of you and your cat. Bird play an extremely valuable role in the ecosystem. Cats frankly, a bit less so, even though they are great pets.

I think the best approach here is to step out of your own day to day and think about the best balance to be acheived with this particular issue between humans and the environment they live in. Pretend you are the emperor of the world and you need to make the wiseset decision you can that maintains a sustainable balance. Would your choice be unhindered cat population expansion?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You're not calling anyone out on anything. We're all quite aware of habitat destruction. It's just not the focus of this particular thread.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Ok, sure, Im not calling you out. I'm calling you deluded.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

How would you quantify that?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

I might bookmark this one :)
