Why would this be the onion? Why should they let him vote without an ID

You'd think that the Prime Minister who implemented the rule to require a photo ID to vote would then not forget his own photo ID at the next time he tries to vote. Smells distinctly oniony.

The Onion isn't ironic, it's satire.

Satire is frequently ironic. The irony in this case is that he was turned away by his own policy.

The irony is that he was affected by his intended policy. Most conservatives rather notably don't make policies that will do that.
