For those interested in the Vision Pro, let me know what questions you have about the device. I’ll be getting mine this afternoon and will be trying out all the features.

According to the filing, Lipnik has been fired from Apple “for failing to follow Apple’s policies designed to protect its confidential information, including development devices and unreleased software and features.” The filing also accuses Lipnik of failing to report “multiple prior breaches” to Apple.

When you sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement), you’d best protect the secrets. Then again, the guy who left an iPhone 4 in a bar didn’t lose his job. Wonder what the differences are between them.

I asked this question after seeing the news that Netflix used AI in the Argentine series called "El Eternauta." It made me wonder if Apple will use AI for its future series and films in the future.

What would you think of this decision, and will you continue using the Apple TV+ service?

Does anyone genuinely like this? I was relieved to see it can be turned off.

One thing I noticed is that the inactive window gets a shadow on it. I wonder if that can also be turned off.

It's a large technology company and has significant funding to invest. But I see that Apple doesn't own or co-own a submarine cable with another company, and I tried searching for it on Submarine Cable Map, but nothing came up.

Apple has its own servers, but also uses third-party servers for its services like iCloud. Meta has its own submarine cables, because Apple doesn't own a submarine cable or doesn't share ownership.

Green-washing, probably. But big tech's hunger for rare earth components is real enough.

The company will buy rare earth magnets created by MP Materials. Both companies will combine on a new recycling line in Mountain Pass, Calif., to meet global demand. Apple said it plans to spend more than $500 billion in the U.S. over the next couple of years on advancing manufacturing and next-generation recycling technologies.

13 or 15” Air (lemmy.dbzer0.com)
submitted 1 week ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

I’m really debating between these two screen sizes.

I mostly use my computer with a monitor, but will occasionally work on it in the kitchen when it in meetings.

My current laptop is 14” and I’m not sure how much of a difference 15” really is over the 13” model.

What is your experience?

If I get the 13” I might use the savings to get a 1tb hard drive which I think is important to me.

I use a windows computer for work with a usb-c to HDMI hub.

I needed to use my wife’s m1 air, and there was weird distortion on the screen. It was minimal, but noticeable.

I read that this can be a problem with m1 and m2 air models. I plan to get an m4 air in the next few months and I’m wondering if this model has any screen distortion problems on an external monitor.

I do not have distortion problems with any of my other computers using the same hub and wires, so I don’t think it’s a problem with them.

How do people help MacOS GUI applications find user-installed executables on the
system?

@apple_enthusiast

I have been helping a friend with a very modern Macintosh follow
@bounga's tip
but it does not seem to work anymore. Which is weird, since it was updated in
July 2023.

I know that Apple doesn't typically enter into business by buying an established company in the sector, but rather does so in its own way, either by creating a company for that purpose and/or partnering with another company in that sector. There are examples of this, such as the Apple Card, Apple Studios, and Apple Energy, although the latter is only used internally.

But I've wondered why Apple hasn't launched its own ISP or Mobile Operator? For example, Google has one called Google Fiber and its mobile operator called Google Fi, although it's actually an MVNO.

The closest thing I've found to an ISP or Mobile Operator is Apple's 20% stake in Globalstar, which allows Apple devices to send an SOS message to satellites. I'd like to know if Apple has a division or subsidiary that is an ISP or mobile operator for internal use, or if they haven't wanted to venture into it due to the risks that may exist in that sector.

When you tap the Share icon—to open a dead link on an Archival website, to strip a YouTube link of the si tracking parameter, to Force Select All on a webpage—you see your iOS/Siri Shortcuts listed at the bottom.

As I should have known, re-arranging them is simple. No need to scroll to the bottom, edit actions, add to favorites, and drag around—unless they really are favorites.

No, instead, just open the Shortcuts app, tap Share Sheet, and re-arrange there. DUH!!!

Hardware: 27" 2017 iMac

Connection: Wired

Storage: 1TB SSD

Hi all. I installed Linux Mint on my Mac on an external drive, which was all good fun. But when I went back to boot into MacOS, I got the 🚫 symbol. Booting into recovery mode and running first aid revealed that the disk was corrupted. The only advice it gave was to run first aid in recovery mode, which I was already doing.

Whatever, no big deal, everything important was backed up. So I went ahead and erased the disk using Extended Journaled (I guess APFS is unavailable for Sierra, which is what recovery mode wants to install). I made an installer disk with a later OS but I just received 🚫 again upon selection. Ran first aid again and it passed. Backed out of disk manager and selected install MacOS. Then after about 3 mins. received the error "an error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again". Tried several more times, receiving the same error every time.

The log reveals even more errors including:

  • "Could not find package ref in any source for:" 15 times for different packages such as "base system resources", "essentials", "OSInstall" etc.
  • No native mechanism to verify InstallESD.dmg
  • Couldn't mount base system dmg! (error code 110)
  • IATOOL: Failed the mount outer dmg

I have installed MacOS several times before, including on the same device.
