First, let me say, I'm an absolute sucker for European style graphic novels. So when I caught On Mars_ at my local shop, I thumbed through it... Yeah, I'm in.

Dystopian future, criminals are used as slave labor to build a colony on Mars. The story follows a new prisoner, sent to Mars for 20 years. As a police officer, she accidentally killed a kid, the daughter of an influential politician.

The prison colony is full of gangs, religious fanatics, and escapees operating in the wild.

Through the three sections, she encounters these multiple groups and struggles to survive. Until someone decides to overthrow the power structure and take over everything for themselves.

It's honestly, a GREAT read, I had no problem with it at all until the last few pages.

spoilerThe religious fanatics attempt a coup and part of this involves bringing in a ship and drones controlled by them.

The protagonist of the story fights them to a standstill, finds a hacker character to take over control of the new drones, and... then he has the new drones kill everyone. THE END!

There's maybe 3, 4 more pages after that and I kept reading hoping for a fakeout... there isn't one. Our dude was damaged enough to off himself and everyone else on Mars.

HUGE downer of an ending, not sure what they're going for there. It's not like Snowpiercer where you know the downer ending is coming, it just comes out of left field. "And then they all died!"

List is up! Let's see here..

Toxie Team-Up #2 - Definitely missed #1, oops!

Blood Brother's Mother #4

Dread The Hall H #1

Catacomb Of Torment #1 - I'll try it, wasn't too keen on Epitaphs though, was more preachy than scary. If this follows suit I'll stick with Creepshow (which I'm for sure following regardless. Love Creepshow.)

Welp that's it for me, what're you pulling?

Just got home from it... Tonally, Gunn absolutely nails it. The main characters are perfectly done, the B-list characters like Mister Terriffic and Metamorpho are perfectly done.

There are issues with some of the C-list / background characters.

Hawkgirl didn't really have much to do and I don't think Gunn knew what to do with her, which is a shame. Giving her a hawk shriek instead of actual dialog was... a choice. She needed more speaking lines.

Similarly, the background characters at the Planet, Cat Grant, Steve Lombard, were just kind of "there". Nobody, not even Perry White, has a "Hey, where's Clark?" moment. I think Gunn was just working from a checklist of who to include.

Ma Kent... I don't know where she's from, but it aint Kansas... Loved the Kents interactions with Clark, but... OK, I'm biased, I married a woman from Kansas, I've been to both Oklahoma and Kansas... I don't know what that accent is.

All of those are minor quibbles. It was a great way to do Superman.

Now: Spoilers:

spoilerEaster egg reference to Mister Mxyzptlk. Lois and Clark are having a serious conversation while outside the window Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl and Mister Terriffic are fighting a giant glowing eyeball. "Oh, it's just an extra-dimensional imp, they got this."

Setting up Supergirl - Krypyo is her dog, Supes is just pet-sitting while she runs off to a red-sun planet so she can get plastered. The opening of Woman of Tomorrow.

With Mister Terrific and Metamorpho in the same movie, we've now had 1/2 of "The Terriffics", all we need now are Plastic Man and Phantom Girl(!)

Big week in a big month for comics fans! Enjoy!

New and notable this week, if you can tear yourself away from all the Superman and Fantastic Four news:

Archie Meets Jay And Silent Bob #1 (One Shot)

There HAVE been crazier crossovers...

Batman Gotham By Gaslight A League For Justice #1 (Of 6) - Originally the last Gotham By Gaslight series was just supposed to be 12 issues, but they split it in half at the introduction of the Gaslight Justice League.

Blood Type #2 (Of 4) - 1st long form comic from the new E.C. Vampire story stemming from Epitaphs From the Abyss. Not sure where E.C. goes after this, all the other titles have ended.

Fantastic Four #1 - Yup, rebooting the FF AGAIN, just in time for the movie.

not to be confused with...

Fantastic Four First Steps #1 - The In-Marvel Cinematic Universe origin of the FF from the new movie, using the likenesses of all the actors.

Future Is ****** #3 - New comics company comes out of nowhere with an ambitious 60 issue plan.

Gotham City Sirens Unfit For Orbit #2 (Of 5) - Harley, Ivy and Catwoman vs... WAIT, Despero? WTF?

Life #5 - Like Bad Idea, glad to see DSTLRY is back on track, Life is a flip book, protagonist story on one side, antagonist on the other. 6th and final issue in the fall.

Planet Death #0 (Of 4)
Planet Death #1 (Of 4) - Bad Idea comics back again! I thought they died!

Solomon Kane The Serpent Ring #4 (Of 4) - Love me some obscure Robert E. Howard characters. Everyone knows Conan, nobody knows Solomon Kane.

Trinity Daughter Of Wonder Woman #2 (Of 6) - Time travel with 3 iterations of Trinity. Teen Ttinity mackin' on teen Jason Todd... hilarious!

Uncanny X-Men #17 - Introduces "Mutina", an in universe slasher film with a Mutant M3gan.

From the official AWA Studios Instagram and Facebook:

"Due to an unexpected misprint, all copies of THEY CHOOSE VIOLENCE #1 are being pulled from shelves ahead of tomorrow’s planned release.

Retailers and readers: we are asking that all copies be destroyed — violently, of course.

A corrected reprint is in process, and we’ll share the new release timeline as soon as it’s locked. We’re just as eager as you are to get this bold new series into your hands — thank you for your patience, your support, and your understanding."

I just started reading comics a few months ago, so I'm fairly new to this.

I enjoyed the Injustice video games, and I've heard the comics were great, so I figure I should read them. The comic book store near me has the individual volumes for Year 1, Year 2, and Year 3. But they also have the Injustice Compendium, which has everything in one book. And the compendium is absolutely gigantic: literally like a phonebook. It just seems like it would be unpleasant to read, impossible to carry around, and most of the pages would have a severe curve when they're open from the inflexible spine.

Have you bought one of these before? Did you prefer it over having individual volumes?

The headline doesn't really tell you why this is important... so here you go!

To promote the first "live action" appearance of Krypto the Super Dog in the new Superman movie, D.C. is re-printing Krypto's first appearance, Adventure Comics #210. 3 copies contain a "Golden Biscuit" ticket for admission to a Superman premier in Los Angeles.

Because this is a special promo, D.C. made it available to retailers for $0.75 per copy. Retailers could decide if they wanted to sell them for the $3.99 cover price, give them away, whatever.

BUT - Retailers found out AFTER the books arrived, that each copy also includes a free one month trial to DCs online service.

Retailers essentially paid $0.75 a copy to advertise an online competitor to their own physical stores.

Some retailers reacted predictably, refusing to sell their reprint stock, some even choosing to destroy them instead.

BUT - NOW it turns out, this special polybagged edition ALSO contains a misprint of the original book.

A book already in limited distribution because retailers are destroying them.

List is up! Let's see here..

Toxie Team-Up #1 - I thought I got this last week?

Exquisite Corpses #2 - #1 was pretty damn good! Picked it up sight unseen based on the name, which itself is based off an old Surrealist/Dadaist game called Exquisite Corpse, in which three artists take turns drawing sections of a dead body. In this game however, the premise is there's 13 wealthy families that control america representing the 13 colonies, they shut down a small town, release a killer each in town, and whoever's killer is last standing wins. Looks like they'll be making a card game out of it too, IRL. Neat concept, great first issue, I'm in.

Well that's it for me! Good week though, I'm excited about both (one more than the other but who's counting?) What're y'all pulling?

Toxie Team-Up #1 - actually been digging the Toxic Avenger stuff but then again I'm a fan of the OG which probably clouds my already questionable judgement.

Falling In Love On The Path To Hell #8 - This is one of the best things running right now I think.

Geiger #15

I Hate Fairyland #41

Lost Fantasy #2 - still behind on the first one..

w0rldtr33 #15

Well that's it for me, what're y'all pulling?

Written by George Takei, Steven Scott, Justin Eisinger
Art by Harmony Becker
Published by IDW Publishing

It Rhymes with Takei fills in the massive blanks George left in his bestselling autobiography of the 1990s by sharing the story of his being a secretly gay man. It’s a book about love, not sex, a book about the pain of hiding one’s true self. It’s a book about fear, about ambition, about shame, about hollow success, and, most of all, it’s a book about growth.

Pitched as "Transmetropolitan meets Trainspotting."

I’m so pumped to show this off! My wonderful wife got this for me as a gift. Core childhood memories unlocked. I’m actually kinda nervous to be the steward of something so special and cool.

This comic came out in the year 2000. I guess back then GPS was so unused in the general public, they felt the need to explain what that meant.

It's just funny to me. Seeing it explicitly explained with an editors note what GPS is.

A place to discuss comic books of all types, from old to new, Big 2 to indie, and everything in between.

Floppies, graphic novels, compilations, omnibusses (omnibusi?) are all fair game.

There is only one rule:*

Comic Books is a no judgement zone.

You can talk all you want about how Rob Liefeld is trash, Bob Kane is an asshole, or Frank Miller and Dave Sim’s politics have made them toxic, that’s all good.

If, however, another user is LEGITIMATELY a fan of something you don’t like, that does NOT make them a lesser person. Attack the art for being bad, not the person for being a fan of bad art.

* I lied. There are TWO rules... No piracy. Cover shots? That's good. Interior pages, in moderation? Sure. Full books? Links to pirate sites? That's how we get things shut down. :(

I'm not saying it's been a problem, because it hasn't been.
