I love how upset some people get about Tilly serving on a big burly masculine warship that sometimes has the serious job of killing people.

If a crew like this didn't have people like Tilly on it, it would have fallen catastrophically apart after the 10th crisis or so.

Especially in this season it so obvious how Tilly's intelligence manifests in being able to bypass entire complexes of prejudice and social norms (perceived and unconscious, spoken and unspoken) whether they be human or alien, and get right to the point with somebody. In an organization that is constantly trying to establish trust with a variety of unknown actors, Tilly is an incredible asset.

edit You know what is actually hilarious, TNG failed to really use Troi's empathetic mind reading in interesting ways for most of its run, to the shows great detriment, but Tilly is basically who Troi would have been if Troi hadn't been sidelined or written to be unconfident or naive for the stupidest reasons in most episodes. Tilly regularly walks into rooms and nearly instantaneously perceives the emotional context of the people in the room (whether or not she knows them that well) and boldly addresses it head on in a way that somehow isn't overbearing, aggressive or intimidating. I don't understand how this can be understood as anything but a minor superpower.

Something I find funny is that a lot of people who don’t know Star Trek that well and have only seen a couple of episodes assume Star Trek is the super optimistic view of humanity that is unrealistically positive about humanities future when if you actually look at the timeline in the 2000s and 2100s Star Trek is actually seriously apocalyptic. Humanity doesn’t turn to a good future out of some inevitable human kindness, it tries violence over and over again until some crazy guy makes a warp engine out of the rubble of destroyed civilization and the Vulcans show up.

It would make way more sense for Stargate cosplayers to be at a renfaire since every single planet they went to on that series seemed to have villagers at about the renaissance level of technology (gotta wonder, did they have access to a bunch of medieval/renaissance sets for cheap lol?).

Of course, if you went as Stargate cosplayers you would have to basically dress up as para military wannabe chuds who’s personalities revolve around owning useless guns (like sword person who is obsessed with swords but way less fun) and being a bigot. People might not even recognize you are in costume and just assume you are a bunch of losers who express their freedom by going to renfaires carrying around murder weapons and dressing in tactical gear.

I didn't hate the Kelvin movies, aesthetically though they were trash in that they took a scifi franchise known for inspiring good UI design and expanded upon it with absolutely horrendous UI. Seriously the computers and interiors of those ships are so ugly it hurts.

Also, starfleet felt WAYYYYYYY too much like a military for me in those movies, there was no attempt to differentiate starfleet from a direct analog to the U.S. military and that just gives me that "kind of want to throw up" feeling every time I see it in star trek.

I don’t watch much other tv than Star Trek, so I don’t really care if it’s a meme to do this on a tv show but I loved it. I usually hate musicals because the songs feel like they hit pause on the story but this episode was hilarious while also being meaningful.

That would be the saltiest ship ever.

We could easily add a special theme to this website that was fun and star trek themed that was opt-in for users, or at least easily opt-outable by going into the settings and changing the theme.

We have a fantastic freedom here to indulge in a very treky themed startrek.website while still making sure to value accessibility and flexibility for those that need it. Lemmy gives control to the user over which theme to choose to display startrek.website in (from the list of installed themes on the startrek.website server). That is one of the fun, but underappreciated aspects of fediverse software. You get to choose how everything looks!

On the note of making a lemmy theme focused on accessibility, I think the lemmy community would be more than thrilled if people created accessibility focused themes for startrek.website , other lemmy instances would surely benefit from that work too!

Again, this is just a fun idea that could only add to the community here, there is no danger in making it unaccessible.

I 100% agree. Federated social networks are about empowering diversity and actualizing democracy. Not just saying "oh we live in a democracy so we must be free" but actually building that freedom out into the structures of our communities. We are freer and more powerful together on a federated social network, and not only can this fan community continue to grow, its presence will definitely encourage other communities to join the fediverse too.

If other people see the fediverse or lemmy mentioned in passing and think "oh, the star trek reddit moved there didn't it? yeah startrek.website" that does a service for the fediverse as whole by making it real to people.

I also think that if this community wanted to allow other topics on it, star trek is a great foundation to build a more general community around! Don't know if that is what people want, just that I think a lot of people might come in the door for star trek and might find like minded people who like discussing other stuff too.
