Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

What kind of crack were you smoking in the shower?

What does that even mean? Consciousness is somewhere in our nervous system. It's not transmitted from some otherworldly place or something

Thats amazing! Tell me, where in the nervous system does it reside?!

I already did: somewhere. I guess it's some kind of emergence, you know the saying "the whole is more than the sum of its parts"

The alternative is mind-body dualism, and it certainly hasn't been proven one way or the other.

I don't have any particularly unique theory.

Me, personally, don't subscribe to any theory other then maybe, I am thinking, so I exist.

Oh you may think you're thinking, but can you prove you're not a Boltzmann brain?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

And what are you implying in the post?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

I'm doing this thing called a thought experiment. It's really fun. Try it sometime.

Transmitted from where though and by whom?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

By ourselves. From somewhere we don't want to be?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If I'm sending my consciousness to escape somewhere, why the fuck would I choose to end up here?

Imagine how bad the other place is. Or maybe it's like severance and once they build a utopia they will upload their full consciousness.

Hadn't really thought of it that way before. I've considered the possibility of an exterior source before but not that it might have something to do with sleep.

These days I'm more leaning to consciousness being the result of some convergence of our neural architecture.

It's like asking the question of, "where's the user environment of a computer?"

Well, it's in the RAM... Except it's also streaming through the CPU, oh also it's on the monitor but that isn't what it actually looks like, however it actually originates from the SSD.

None of these individual components matter in a truly meaningful way without all of them. It is the same with the brain, take out any part of it and effectiveness is diminished or outright bricked.

The disturbing part of this idea is that once humans create a computer similar enough to our own brain, it will just inherently be conscious. "Organic" or not.

It's so interesting to me ginormous mysteries we kind of just navigate through every day. How other people find them not interesting at all. How we could speculate forever and maybe the real answer is actually crazier then the speculation. I dont know.

You can just stop this thought after the 1st if
