News and Discussions about Reddit

Welcome to !reddit. This is a community for all news and discussions about Reddit.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules

Rule 1- No brigading.

**You may not encourage brigading any communities or subreddits in any way. **

YSKs are about self-improvement on how to do things.

Rule 2- No illegal or NSFW or gore content.

**No illegal or NSFW or gore content. **

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-Reddit posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

Signal is centralised and most certainly NOT part of the fediverse

[–] [email protected] 34 points 2 months ago

this meme is sending the wrong signal

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

Yeah, this is more about getting away from the centralised / commercial / corporate / commodified / compromised / etc -verse.

What do we call that side of social media anyway?

It would be nice to have a term to sum it all up. Because for a lot of people it's just the water they're in - they don't think about it, because it's default/mainstream. They don't even consider that they have a choice.

Kind of like, but not really, how the term cis makes people confront that they have a label, even if they don't think about it.

What is suggested alternative?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 months ago (1 children)

probably matrix. it's decentralised, but not with the same protocol as the other things in the list. which makes sense, instant messaging is not social media.

My friends and family use Briar. It is without a question the most secure, most private option.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

briar is great, but i don't think any of these services are really recommended for their privacy. rather, it's ease of switching. doesn't briar require in-person verification?

You can add at a distance. You can also "introduce" two contacts to each other. There's also forums and groups you can create or join.

But IRC is also centralized. You don't peer/chat between servers?

Pixelfed and Loops aren’t ready for migration. Account creation is still disabled and requires several messages to work around the beta splash page.

Pixelfed worked for me creating a new account.

Loops hasn't worked

But ymmv

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Pixelfed worked for me too, super easy registration.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Loops worked for me but I had to register. Only took like 10 minutes to get the email about 2 months ago.

as far as I'm aware there's still no android app

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

There is. Its not just a web wrapper either as far as I can tell.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I couldn't find it. Where do I download it

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Yeah I can't find anymore either tbh. It was on their website loops.video

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

They give you the APK file when you're invited. That's what I'm using

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Okay, but I've got a login from before they did an android version and can't get on

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

Android version should be downloadable here after you login. If it isn't, let them know at [email protected].

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm on loops and it kinda works for me. Android client just crashes every now and then

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Consider yourself lucky! Not many folks can get an account

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

I do! I'm trying to actually engage and post oc, too

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Signal is not federated. Matrix or xmpp is the federated chat

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Can I get any of these to bubble?

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago

I love when I try to switch apps like this and instead of content I get explanations of some Fediverse bs on 10 screens and have to pick instances I know nothing about, wondering if I will have a bad experience with what I picked, so I just abandon ship

And when I manage to finish the process I get either something that's not working or a majorly inferior experience. Lemmy is the only thing I managed to stick with. Before good clients became available for it, it also wasn't looking good

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Loops, huh? I'll check that out.

Oh wait.

"We're not accepting new users at this time."

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago

It’s still in early stages of development.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

It seems like they open up registrations in waves while it's still in development. Signups were open just a couple weeks ago, so I imagine they'll probably turn them back on again soon.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago

Loops.Video is 'not accepting new users at this time'

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago

Can you talk to your Facebook friends on Signal?
