How many Israeli deaths lay at the feet of the IDF due to this directive?
How many Palestinian deaths happened because the Israeli citizens killed under the Hannibal Directive were used as justification for attacking Palestinians?
A community for discussing events around the World
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

How many Israeli deaths lay at the feet of the IDF due to this directive?
How many Palestinian deaths happened because the Israeli citizens killed under the Hannibal Directive were used as justification for attacking Palestinians?
They were only killed if they were already held hostage, like don’t get me wrong dying is the end all your life is just over but being held kidnapped for over a year being raped and tortured seems worse to me than just dying as I got kidnapped knowing my kidnappers got killed too.
"They wanted to die." Helluva an argument. Kudos
I didn’t say they wanted to die I said I would rather die.
If only it had been you then, eh?
Scenario: you just had armed militants break into your home and a firefight ensued killing your dog and SO and you have been dragged into the back of a van to be held hostage with a 25% death rate and there is a group of allied soldiers
Would you rather they:
A) do nothing B) fire on the vehicle possibly injuring/killing you
This is a different scenario, though. The Hannibal directive is specifically targeting YOU, not the vehicle.
So your scenario should be more like:
You have armed militants who take you hostage, putting you in the front seat of the van
Would you rather they:
- do nothing now, and try to rescue you when safely possible
- shoot you in the head
No need to get anyone killed or hold anyone hostage, just living in this fascist world makes me wish a missile would land on me
False dichotomy.
The only hostages who were raped and tortured are the Palestinians.
Yet another Israeli war crime...
The cost of even maintaining the metadata about Israeli crimes must be enormous.
At first, I assumed that the IDF had ROE that allowed them to attack a vehicle or position regardless of hostage presence. But NO, they were targeting the hostages!
This is stunning. I'm going to have to think on this.
EDIT: I don't want to think on this anymore. This isn't triggering, it's a goddamn info-hazard.
That is where the term "Hannibal directive" comes from. It was invented after the IDF had to fork over a ton of Palestinian captives in exchange for captured IDF soldiers.
Hannibal Procedure or Hannibal Protocol, is the name of a controversial procedure used by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to prevent the capture of Israeli soldiers by enemy forces. According to one version, it says that "the kidnapping must be stopped by all means, even at the price of striking and harming our own forces.
What is even more dystopian is how the IDF uses a contradiction to describe the protocol: "rescuing their own soldier, even if it means shooting them".
How very Ruzzian of them 🙂↔️Almost like fascists are working off the same common script
Zionists are even more Fascist than the present day Russian regime: the Russians are traditional Fascists, all "love of the Nation" and shit like that plus oppressing and invading neighboring nations to take their stuff rather than to annihilate them, whilst Zionists are ethno-Fascists, like the Nazis, all about being a superior people ("the chosen people") who have to annihilate a sub-human people ("human animals"), their discourse (even just normal newspapers in Israel) rife with Racism whilst Russian discourse is rife with nationalism.
You will notice that the Russians actually want to turn Ukrainians into Russians (which is what they tried really hard to do in the occupied areas) whilst the Zionists are exactly the opposite towards Palestinians or in fact, anybody not of their "chosen people" with the actual Constitution of Israel stating that all Jews and only Jews are Israeli Nationals (which is why, uniquely, Israel separates Citizenship from Nationality, so one can be a Christian Israeli Citizen or an Arab Israeli Citizen but only a Jew can be an Israeli National).
Russia is bad, really bad, and yet Zionist Israel is next level in the Fascist scales compared to Russia.
So, one of the best secret service and intelligence agency in the world didn’t see a full combined air/ground assault coming… but they were ready to issue the order to kill civilian hostages.
(Sorry for my tinfoil hat moment, but since that day I believe they intentionally let the attack happen to justify their genocide in Gaza)
Egypt warned them 3 days prior to the attack BBC .
The world need to be reminded of this. I am quite sure that Netanyahu deliberately ignored the warnings to start a war and use it to distract the public attention away from his own corruption.
Yeah. It’s their 9/11. Sickening.
It’s been nothing short of disgusting the last year and half. Everyone who has been enabling this to escalate is nothing short of evil
I'm surprised the DNC boot-lickers haven't yet rushed this tread parroting the propaganda that it's all the fault of the non-voters that it's the horrible Fascist-lover Genocide-supporter Trump doing bad things to Palestinians whilst conveniently ignoring that their very own Fascist-lover Genocide-supporting Biden was the one "unwaveringly" supporting Israel in things like this (even gleefully spreading the Israeli lies on this, a man who as POTUS definitely had access to intel to know that Israel had activated the Hannibal Protocol) and even worse, supporting the year-long Genocide the Zionists were doing in Gaza complete with tens of thousands of murdered children, all of which the other of the DNC's chosen candidates, Kamala Harris also supported.
One of the most disgusting things in all this is the extreme hypocrisy of one bunch of supporters of child mass-murder blaming those who wouldn't vote for supporters of child mass-murder, for the result of an election were a different bunch of child mass-murder supporters won, as if supporting child mass-murder was anything else than their choice a choice which they could've changed at any time and yet, repeatedly, chose to double down on.
It makes me sick that people who actively SUPPORT the enablers of child mass-murder portray themselves as having the moral high ground versus people whose Morals and Ethics stopped them from supporting any enablers of child mass-murder. You do not have and will never have the moral high-ground for the rest of your life when you supported the people who were behind 17 pages worth of murdered babies: blood of those babies is forever in your hands.
Fuck the Israeli government, I'm sure this policy has nothing to do with mercy nor information, however, it is not an uncommon tactic when captivity likely includes interrogation and/or torture.
Hamas has always been pretty good to their captives. As recently proven once again recently by none of the captives saying they were tortured.
If any Israelis were tortured we would be guaranteed to read the stories on the front page of every big newspaper. Unlike the Palestinians whose actual torture gets completely buried by the news.
It's not like IDF soldiers hold much special knowledge. They simply become pawns to be traded for Palestinian prisoners.
Hamas has always been pretty good to their captives.
Not sure how much I believe this. We'll have to hear from the captives themselves.
There are plenty of stories of released captives. They are all much of the same. During the captive taking it was rough and they were often hurt. But once they were in captivity it was mostly boring.
Democracy Now: https://youtu.be/rzGd92axe_o
Their biggest fear was getting killed by Israeli bombs. And the injuries they sustained during captivity were by Israeli bombs.
Freed Israeli hostages held by Hamas were terrified IDF airstrikes would kill them
It's really just the israeli people at this point.
All of them have the capacity to leave, but they choose not to. It's not cheap living in Israel.
Children don't have the ability to leave.
Their parents do.
Kids aren't their parents.
Are you stupid? Their parents can make the decision to leave and take their kids with them.
How dumb do you have to be to believe anyone is blaming children for any of this?
Pretty much all Israelis can get citizenship in the country their grandparents came from.
Irrelevant to my point. If you're a minor in Israel, you don't have many options to move out until you're an adult.
Where are you getting this idea? Only about 10% have dual-citizenship. Who’s going to absorb the other 90%? And most probably aren't wealthy enough to simply pick up their lives and leave.
Who’s going to absorb the other 90%?
The US has plenty of room. You can fit 11 Israels in Wyoming.
And now the Israelis are even exterminating jews. But it's all fine! Because they are fighting HAMAS!
You won't catch me losing sleep over IDF soldiers hard canceling others IDF soldiers but civs and hostages is just fucking sick and unhuman.
Intentionally killing civilians is also a war crime. One of the many, many war crimes that I doubt the Israeli commanders issuing these orders, nor the troops committing the acts will ever be held accountable for.
