U.S. President Donald Trump directed the U.S. to pause all assistance to Ukraine as he seeks to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to engage in peace talks with Russia.

The decision appears to halt arms deliveries approved under the Biden administration, but it was not clear whether deliveries of ammunition for weapons systems already in Ukraine would be affected.

Ukraine, which depends heavily on foreign help to hold back the Russian invasion that began on Feb. 24 2022, has feared that aid could be stopped since Trump took office.

Our (Denmark) defense minister Troels Lund Poulsen just stated that this will. have significant impact on Ukraine's ability to defend itself.

OK that's true, but how was this outcome not viewed as extremely likely already when Trump was elected?
It's a bit late to act surprised now, we had hoped it wouldn't get to this, but everybody with more than 2 brain cells absolutely 100% expected this could happen.

At least it looks like Europe and Canada is taking this serious, and has prepared to increase aid for the past 2 weeks. But it should have been at least the past ½ year!!!

USA can currently not be considered an ally of Europe, or even NATO, and they are traitors to democracy. This is NOT just Trump, it is America as a whole!!!

Sadly true.

And not an ally to Canada. Canada will be kind of invaded by the north by Russia, and by the south by USA.

True, it's absolutely insane the rhetoric the US administration is using about Canada. Also the tariffs are crazy, like WTF???
Obviously the real reason can't be fentanyl, firstly because there is no reason to believe that would come from Canada in any significant amount, second because a tariff obviously doesn't do anything to stop drug trafficking.

US politics is a madhouse.

Canada is responsible for less than 1% of fentanyl entering the USA. Trump, however, wants his tarrifs and it's difficult to impose them legally because we have signed trade agreements (that he signed). In order to skirt this, he declares a national emergency based on a fabricated border crises. This allows him to use presidential powers that are reserved for such crisis and circumvent the normal process.

Like a good little Hitler, an agreement with Trump isn't worth the paper it's written on.

It fills me with rage every time I see this news. Christ. This is a disgusting betrayal of Ukraine.

I search for profanity that can express the deep loathing for this and to that slug Trump for doing it, and I just draw a blank.

Ukrainian blood is on our hands.

From the moment he was elected I felt a sinking feeling in my gut and feared what it would mean for the whole world, but especially the Ukrainian people. This action and those of the preceding few days have exceeded, by far, my worst expectations. We still have shy of four more years of this lunacy, and it looks as though things are about to get much worse. I genuinely fear for the future.

Europe is all that gives me hope.

This play, yelling a Zelensky, with the Vice-Dachshund yapping alongside him is all a perception management game to garner base support for a thing they intended to do anyway.

It’s working too. Republicans do this loyalty thing where they all stand in a straight line and repeat the mantras Shapiro and company tell them to while DEMs don’t even like one another and constantly argue and gate keep in house as to what liberal means while rolling over and doing nothing effective. Though not in unity, never that.

Memes are even rounding now labeling Zelensky a dangerous dictator. The narrative is: Z attacked innocent Russians living in Ukraine thus inciting the Russian attack, to defend them, thus bringing the Russian invasion in on himself. Pure bullshit, but it’s being repeated, and it’s sticking, in party.

Again, perception management that doubles in laying groundwork for the second item. Trump WANTS to play with the biggest war chest on the planet, like he played in the cab of the construction vehicle on live television. Last go he was surrounded by people who said no or nodded yes while doing nothing. This go, we are all in serious trouble. War makes money, especially for President Elon Musk, so I will be surprised if it’s not already being planned.

It’s all a game. Drama. Zelensky didn’t need to cross the globe for a conversation, only to be there on the stage as planned for the drama. Don’t believe him. DONT believe him when he says Zelenskys behavior at the meeting lost him his funding. Ukraine was already dropped, this was just a dramatization for effect.

And the wobbly creation of a potential patsy when Trump starts WW3.

Support your brightest and your best. Do things untethered to the superpowers, because they will turn on you when things get tense.

I’m not surprised, but I am infuriated.

Tangentially: it is darkly hilarious to me that Biden thought he could put, like, literally anything into motion that would definitely keep working past January 20th of this year. Amongst other things, it shows a tragic and comical lack of imagination and understanding of how our government actually works - which is what we’re seeing play out now with military aid for Ukraine, amongst many other things.
