Either this will be annoying as hell, and we all get tired of "I am Groot" or this could be amazing with a wall-e style low dialog movie.
Or they marvel it up with an unnecessary side character that never stops talking.

As I understand it, Groot has complete and complex thoughts and emotions but only three words with which to express them.
I can imagine a movie in which we're hearing his thoughts rather than his words. It could be interesting, particularly if another actor voices his thoughts.
Groot's race, being plant-based, communicates through pheromones and infrasound IIRC. Rocket understands him after a fashion because he's a raccoon, and thus can both smell the pheromones and hear the infrasound.
