Having Bond not be a Brit seems to defeat the whole purpose.

And George Lazenby is Australian.

There are plenty of examples of Brits playing Americans, Hugh Laurie as House for example.

There are also examples, thought fewer, of Americans playing Brits, John Lithgow as Winston Churchill for example.

I agree that Bond should be a British character, but I don't think he must be a British actor. I imagine someone who is British would have an easier time playing a British character, but if the right non-British actor came along, I'm not against casting them as Bond.
