Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1174 readers
189 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YTPB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

MODERATORS

Banned last night and all my comments removed for calling out a Zionist troll who FREQUENTLY posts comments trashing Palestinians and celebrating death in the name of Israel.

But I'm the one that gets banned for Checks Notes "Rule 3: No Nazis, QAnon or similar"

What a circus, mods did ZERO due diligence before banning and the Zionists comment remains!

So, one of these 4 is a certified Power Tripping Bastard

*Edit: NOT TO MENTION the frequency with which I am in the Ukraine comm in support of Ukraine and correcting false comments and shit, THE KIND OF SHIT A MOD IS FOR.

Edit 2 I will concede that maybe I posted in haste. I was seeing red for a moment there because how the fuck is a user like that still just out and about commenting.

I would just like anyone who reads this to start being more aware of WHO you are interacting with on Lemmy and be more mindful of the scum around here that have popped up more and more as reddit migrants come in. We should NOT be "tolerant" of these people, they can go fuck off to X and Meta and their other fascy platforms.

Accusing someone of being a Zionist when no Zionist issue has been brought up is often a sign of a right-wing lunatic. Without the comment having some connection to Zionism, you cannot expect the mods to have the same full list of user histories that you do. You had the full context of the user's history - the mods likely did not. BPR.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It’s a sign of antisemitism. That’s not confined to the right-Wing, but widespread across the political spectrum.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

It's downright common in some communities

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

Im not sure it is a right-wing thing. It's just lunacy

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Again, the REASON given, makes zero sense. the PARENT comment of this comment thread is in support of Ukraine and the topic at hand.

And I would argue that yes, is IS the job of a mod to actually do some homework before rendering a ban.

Man, a few of us are terminally online, but most mods are doing this as a part-time service during their recreation time. Not everyone has the time. You want the mods to know something, you have to tell them.

Randomly calling people "zionists" raises red flags. Seems more of a bpr to me

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Actually, that user has been banned from your instance: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/u/[email protected]

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yes, and he's no innocent victim. OP has the correct assessment. But agree with everyone else that this comes across as a BPR/YDI, because it was completely out of context.

It's more useful imo to report the comments of that user each time they say something hateful, so they can get banned on their home instance.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Have reported, gets ignored. I report all these people and it continues.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Well we instance banned him so reports do help. But yeah would be good if the fedia.io admin would do something.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

Pinged them above, let's see how it goes

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Maybe go read some of his comments and you'll get it. No we shouldn't give an inch to people who celebrate death of innocents. and the REASON given for the ban makes zero sense.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If you call someone a Zionist for making an innocuous comment, even if they really are a Zionist, you are still in the wrong because you assume your audience already knows they are one.

Since nobody else knows the history, they just see you being an asshole.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (9 children)

interesting considering the upvotes then. Perhaps it encouraged SOME people to maybe dig into the comment history.

People on Lemmy need to keep their eyes open and stop taking each and every comment at face value and start keeping a working memory of who these users are and how the behave, or else we may as well just let the communities turn into new reddit.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (7 children)

You cannot seriously expect everyone to keep track of hundreds of anonymous handles.

I can probably name like 4 Lemmy users and I only remember those because I like them.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Use a client that allows you to make tags. Not that difficult to immediately label the shitty people like Zionists, Racists, Transphobes, etc.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Label them to yourself, sure. Go around shouting ‘ZIONIST!’ everywhere and you come off a loon.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Guess I care too much about this platform that I'm willing to call out the scum when I see it and not let it spread bringing us all down in the process

There is no "Zionist comment". Maybe "A zionists Comment".

Which is prpbably why you were banned. Off-topic and ad-hominem. Your comment makes you look like an asshole that stalks people, de-rails discussions and tries to to invalidate their arguments with ad-hlminem comments.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I'm going to go with PTB-BPR maybe?

Don't get me wrong, fuck that guy in the picture. I've seen his comments - but just blatantly bringing it up when a lot of users aren't even going to know who he is (including the mod) it's understandable. So from their perspective it just looks like you called someone a zionist for no reason.

But from my own perspective? PTB.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The user in the picture that OP is referring to doesn't have the best modlog: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/modlog?userId=14413645

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

what genocide? arabs attack, rape, and murder, then esconce the terrorists directly in and between civilian populations for the sole reason so that when israel responds the body count can be escalated and used as public relations. genocide. shame on you.

What a piece of shit. Glad i banned him, haven't seen his comments in a while.

The disregard of Hamas for the deaths of Palestinian civilians is no secret.

https://www.wsj.com/world/middle-east/gaza-chiefs-brutal-calculation-civilian-bloodshed-will-help-hamas-626720e7

https://archive.ph/DL9Kk

In one message to Hamas leaders in Doha, Sinwar cited civilian losses in national-liberation conflicts in places such as Algeria, where hundreds of thousands of people died fighting for independence from France, saying, “these are necessary sacrifices.”

In an April 11 letter to Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh after three of Haniyeh’s adult sons were killed by an Israeli airstrike, Sinwar wrote that their deaths and those of other Palestinians would “infuse life into the veins of this nation, prompting it to rise to its glory and honor.”

Sinwar isn’t the first Palestinian leader to embrace bloodshed as a means to pressure Israel. But the scale of the collateral damage in this war—civilians killed and destruction wrought—is unprecedented between Israelis and Palestinians.

There are no shelters for civilians to protect them built by Hamas, only military bunkers and tunnels (with video).

“We built the tunnels because we have no other way of protecting ourselves from being killed in airstrikes. We are fighting from inside the tunnels,” the Qatar-based official said

“Seventy-five percent of the population of Gaza are refugees, and it is the UN’s responsibility to protect them,” Abu Marzouk added

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm less concerned about that - denying genocide and extreme racism to arabs is completely not okay.

arabs attack, rape, and murder, then esconce the terrorists directly in and between civilian populations

This is racism, "arabs attack, rape and murder" is racist.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

It’s a clear reference to October 7th 2023 Al-Aqsa Flood from the context. Plenty of attacks, rape, and murder occurred on that day.

If the current war in Gaza can be considered a genocide or not, is not a resolved matter.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

How would they know he's a neozionist from just your comment? But this seems to be a trend, also happened on reddit's worldnews, although the support for the brigade there was quite explicit and was actively used to try to prop up the "War on Israel" to the same level as Ukraine long after Iran had been dealt with.

It's petty shit like that, trying to eliminate people from conversation so they don't have to deal with anyone with a history of supporting one of the good guys criticizing their genocide and ruining their "but we are also the good guys" narrative. Sort of why they get so defensive when they pull up the antisemitism label that Palestinians are also semites and that many groups that are antisemitic are also generally islamophobic outside of their hate circle with Arabs. These neozionist brigades have remained active long after Act-IL.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I knew who the user was before I even opened this. Everytime I see that username in a news or politics sub I'm surprised they haven't been banned. Don't know if this was the right place to call them out, but I get your frustration.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

Genuinely have no idea how he isn't banned off of his instance, he's said some incredibly racist shit about arabs.

edit: his own words:

what genocide? arabs attack, rape, and murder, then esconce the terrorists directly in and between civilian populations for the sole reason so that when israel responds the body count can be escalated and used as public relations. genocide. shame on you.

~~fedia.io's admin has been known to be incredibly lax when it comes to banning their own users for hostility. I've seen them let way worse things slide before, and only quietly intervene if it gets big and bad enough to make fedia itself look bad.~~

User's account was suspended, looks like they're taking things more seriously than they have in the past.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

Oh wow, awesome. Nice to know they're taking things more seriously now.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Lol, that's just the tip of the iceberg too - you can check his modlog/current comment history if you want to lose your mind.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Maybe someone should raise the issue to the fedia.io admin? @[email protected] ?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Thanks for tagging me. That account is banned/suspended now.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I don't think he'll do anything about it, I've seen him let a lot worse shit slide before.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

I just got word that he did do something about it, and has banned the person. Hopefully this becomes more common and that kind of abuse is taken more seriously on fedia.io

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Just a general complaint.

While I know that it's not always doable, when posts here don't contain a screen shot of the original comment or post, it makes it harder to give a damn about it.

I mean, here you are making a claim that what you said didn't violate that rule, but we gotta jump through hoops to discover what was said.

Regarding your edit, how often you use a community isn't relevant. You could spend hours every day in a C/, and that doesn't excuse you from community rules. Totally not useful for forming an opinion on a mod or admin action

My own edit: you don't have anything in your user history for weeks that's in that community, so it makes that aspect even less relevant

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Is the screenshot not showing for you? I posted a screenshot of the comment exchange.

IMHO we as users of Lemmy should absolutely be hounding the scum from the platform unless we want this to devolve into the same shit reddit has (a trend i've seen more and more and more over the last 6 months or so)
