US President Donald Trump has today announced massive new tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium, while threatening to "shut down" its car industry and saying the best way to end the trade war was for Washington's ally to be absorbed into the US.

Literally doubling down on a mistake.

Especially when it's clear Canada, and the rest of the world, isn't going to stand for it.

Make it 100%. Make it 200%. See what fucking happens.

If the tariffs are increasing on steel and aluminum… where is the metal going to come from?

This has moved into the US government being a protection racket; you can buy the materials you need, but only if you pay Trump a 50% cut.

It seems like the goal is to remove all taxes on the rich and the corporations and pay for government through tariffs.

Oh no! We're going to make even more money on the electricity production you can't easily replace; while we diversity our auto markets (we buy more than we sell, Hello EU + Chinese auto markets) and laugh at Ford+GM begging for another bailout.

How many more times is America going to let their wannabe king shoot them in the feet?

I would absolutely love if we could start getting more small European cars. American cars are just stupidly big for no reason

Ooh, that is a great side effect! We definitely need smaller commuting vehicles.

Chinese cars are subsidized by the Chinese government. Go for EU sized cars

Chinese cars also are extremely unlikely to meet Canadian quality and safety standards.

That said, the SSybertruck got an exemption that needs to be revoked and fully tested.

Good, just in time for them to all pay 50% more to build those factories they will need.
