News and Discussions about Reddit

Welcome to !reddit. This is a community for all news and discussions about Reddit.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules

Rule 1- No brigading.

**You may not encourage brigading any communities or subreddits in any way. **

YSKs are about self-improvement on how to do things.

Rule 2- No illegal or NSFW or gore content.

**No illegal or NSFW or gore content. **

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-Reddit posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

Apparently saying [some stuff] is now against the rules too even though they never told us

Lemmy.ml enacts censorship in this manner as well, as too does Midwest.social. But there are so very many other instances that do not, making the former easy to avoid while being able to engage with a ton of content:-).

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

.world actively removes Luigi posts. Lemmy.ml does not.

Recent example: https://lemmy.world/comment/15689396

Lemmy.ml enacts censorship in this manner as well

I was talking about censorship in general, but you might be right specifically about Luigi mentions on those instances, I would not know.

There are whole entire communities dedicated to discussion of this effect - e.g. [email protected].

Your example removed comment is fair, although done by a community mod rather than as the OP article here suggests done without the Reddit sub mods even being able to see the comments prior to removal. Then again, Lemmy.World is rather authoritian on the spectrum. You can always move your account to some other instance that you prefer better btw, like lemmy.dbzer0.com if you want a more anarchist experience or slrpnk.net for communism.

The beauty of Lemmy is not that we are a so-called "free speech platform" - bc we are definitely NOT that! - but rather that we can easily shift over to somewhere else if need be, even spin up our very own instance (that one takes resources, time, and technical knowledge).

For example, I've given up on most of the largest communities on Lemmy.world, most of the time, and subscribe rather to smaller versions elsewhere.

Just read the article came here to post it and lookie here. Yeah man absolutely disgusting. I came over a few days ago after getting the 7 day ban for the exact things stated in the article. But then I told the Reddit team some colorful words, and they decided to permanently banned me. Fucking bootlickers

[–] [email protected] 42 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah fuck Reddit. It was a great platform once. Now it's dogshit. The leadership is visionless and obsessed with monetization, finally deciding to kill the golden goose

I got an upvote warning. That's why I'm here

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 week ago

Ditto. 11 years on Reddit.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You might find it a little weird being replied too instead of being shadow banned. But it's mostly how we roll here. Freedom of speech on corpoland is impossible but on a proper federated instance is actual freedom.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Quite the opposite of being shadowbanned in fact. Unless an instance is doing something custom, you can peruse an instance's modlog: https://lemmy.ml/modlog

Using lemmy.ml as example not because I'm painting the entire instance with the same brush, just came to mind because I had a comment removed for being "reactionary".

Can't recall what I said, perhaps there is a time limit on how far back the mod log is accessible.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

Same. Threaten to ban me? I'll just make it easy for you.

[–] [email protected] 63 points 1 week ago (3 children)

a website that ostensibly prides itself on giving its users and communities a platform for free speech

lol come on now

[–] [email protected] 26 points 1 week ago (2 children)

What even is "free speech"?

Does that mean I can post a magnet link to a Pirates of The Carribean movie?

I personally don't consider any platform "free speech" unless I can roleplay Captain Jack Sparrow. 🏴‍☠️

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Free speech in the US covers literally anything besides direct threats.

Cool, lemmy test it:

Link to Pirates of the Caribbean (the 3rd movie): magnet:?xt=urn:btih:976CE4DA9AC1CDC032B854449541D3EA367C076D&dn=Pirates%20of%20the%20Caribbean%3A%20At%20World's%20End%20(2007)%201080p%20BrRip%20x264&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.opentrackr.org%3A1337&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Fopen.stealth.si%3A80%2Fannounce&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.torrent.eu.org%3A451%2Fannounce&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.bittor.pw%3A1337%2Fannounce&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Fpublic.popcorn-tracker.org%3A6969%2Fannounce&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.dler.org%3A6969%2Fannounce&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Fexodus.desync.com%3A6969&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Fopen.demonii.com%3A1337%2Fannounce

Oh shit its lemmy.world... oh well, see y'all in the mod logs 👀

MAGA style 'free speech' where we're all free to have the opinions of right wing christian bigots forced onto us but speaking out against right wing christian bigots is 'hate speech' or 'wishing harm' or whatever other fucking excuse they can come up with.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Speaking out against right wing Christian bigots is literal persecution. Who would've thought that one of the greatest majorities living in the Freest Country on Earth would be so ever oppressed. uwu

And permabanning them for making anti-Nazi statements. Soon it will just be bots upvoting content created by other bots. Waste of electricity.

[–] [email protected] 52 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The r/PublicFreakout team suggested that because of this public scrutiny, from both shareholders and government-linked figures like Musk, "Reddit is under serious pressure to get its userbase under control” and imposing whatever haphazard measures it can to accomplish this.

Lmao. This is currently the top post on /r/all. How's that control working out for you Spez?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 week ago

The serious pressure:

[–] [email protected] 51 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It would be funny if we made one thread of praise for Luigi, and fill it with replies to all get banned at the same time. A huge drop in users all of a sudden, sounds fun.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 week ago

Oh count me in

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 week ago (5 children)

Just found out half of everything I ever did on the site was shadow banned. Looking into ways to mass delete my history.

Where do I sign up for the exodus post?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

There are scripts you can run (there’s a few people have posted on GitHub) that will do one better.

If you mass delete all your posts, Reddit can detect that and just undelete everything. I haven’t seen evidence of that happening, but that’s why people wrote those scripts so maybe there’s something to it.

What those scripts will do is go and edit everything post and comment you’ve ever submitted and replace it with gibberish generated content. That effectively poisons your history in Reddit so the poor AI training runs have a bad time.

I was just banned from Reddit for promoting Lemmy and upvoting anti-Trump comments. No joke 😂 It finally happened

It's a good sign actually. They're scared! It means the discourse can, and will, make a difference.

[–] [email protected] 30 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I’ve never regretted deleting my Reddit (paid) account. And every day brings more confirmation I did the right thing.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 week ago (3 children)

You paid for a Reddit account? I was on there for 11 years and I don't recall an option to pay for an account. (I probably just ignored it.. Was it an ad-free thing?)

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 week ago

You could pay for a "gold" account that unlocked a few different features that could also be unlocked by using something like Reddit Enhancement Suite and a few Gold-only subreddits.

That's because 'Spez' (Spaz?) or whatever felt the fear. He knows he's being a shithead and probably believes that someone will be gunning for him if the rethoric is allowed to grow. It's a fearful bid for self-preservation.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 week ago (2 children)

We honestly need a tracker for him similar to [email protected]

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

One of my old burner accounts was banned. Because I said we should throw shit at Reddit HQ. Go walk your dog and save a wet one. Then take a walk by the office.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

i had a bunch of burner ones that were banned even if they were 5+years old. mostly avoided any subs i was perma banned in an old acct, but they decided to assume any acct that posted in one of these to ban.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It’s such a shit website. Happy to be away for good.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

i only go into the niche subs i cant find here, and only on that. thats my last acct, and its almost oldest one, ironically its been flagged by reddit with the perma-banned but wasnt banned, but im pretty sure its on thin ice. politics and news subs and adjacent subs really poisoned the site and its users.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 days ago

Same for unique hobbies and sports teams. But I just don’t use the website anymore since I’m banned. I need a new pc to ever create another account. To get them to not auto ban that new acct. but it’s not worth it for me.

I was a 12 year Redditor, with nearly 1 million Karma, so I was a major contributor for over a decade, yet I was recently perma-banned for repeating a perfectly normal anti-Trump/ anti-Insurrection opinion that I had previously stated numerous times with no warnings. Once Trump was elected, I was PERMANENTLY banned the next time I stated that opinion.

Ohanian has announced that he wants to buy TikTok, and everyone knows that TikTok's new American owner will be personally chosen by Krasnov, so hell want make the Sociopathic Oligarchs compete like dancing monkeys. Only those who have followed his orders, smooched his fat ass, and paid sufficient bribes will be considered. So they are combing through Reddit and banning anyone who might hurt HitlerPig's feelings.

At first I wasn't happy about the much smaller comment sections on Lemmy, but then I realized that it also isn't flooded with bots, trolls, endless stupid terrible puns, and overmoderation.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

but then I realized that it also isn’t flooded with bots, trolls, endless stupid terrible puns, and overmoderation

… yet. This is an experiment – we will find how this turns out in a decade, and if federation is a "fix" to these general (inevitable ?) social media issues

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago

Welcome to Lemmy, here are a few pointers to help you settle in

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 week ago

I’m just glad there’s a broader discussion about it, this is exactly what we need.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 week ago (2 children)

My guess is they want clean and aligned data to train AI. They’ll save time and money by getting people in line early, or banning those that don’t follow their rules.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

the data mostly being right wing driven, which drives traffic resulting in better ad-revenue. both youtube, and FB does this now. because right wings love drama and conflict. additionally pos top youtubers like beast and others.

Got banned multipe times for saying things like 'Lorena bobbit' or 'federal workers shouldn't take their jobs back if they get rehired' so...guess we'll see how long it'll take ya'll to get sick of me...😅

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 week ago

this is happening on tiktok too. I got a violation warning for criticizing tiktok on tiktok. They said I was "bullying." This is some social media shit that is happening across platforms. I know I am not making this up in my head.
