Syria’s leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has hailed the start of a “new history” for his country, after signing into force a constitutional declaration regulating its five-year transitional period and laying out rights for women and freedom of expression.

The declaration comes three months after Islamist-led rebels toppled Bashar al-Assad’s repressive government, leading to calls for an inclusive new Syria that respects rights.

. . .

Sharaa, Syria’s interim president, said on Thursday he hoped the constitutional declaration would mark the beginning of “a new history for Syria, where we replace oppression with justice … and suffering with mercy”, as he signed the document at the presidential palace.

Deck is stacked against them here, but it’s the best shot at a brighter future in quite some time.

I’m really happy that Syria got out from under Assad’s thumb and look to be moving in a positive direction. Honestly, it seems like you guys could be one of the few bright spots in a pretty bleak world these days.

With the recent massacre of Alawites it is up in the air. It might turn into a Libya type civil war situation. With America and Israel around the corner it is unlikely they will leave it intact without divide and conquering.

It would be awesome if some of those refugees go back home with capital, know how, and firsthand knowledge of how great a free and representative democracy can be. I can't help but feel there's a real opportunity to give people the tools they need to build a country they can love living in.

I'm sure humans being what we are though there will just be more violence, greed and hate. Seems to be the theme.

They can also learn a lot from Rojava. I hope that chance isn't wasted.

Never heard of it before now. Just looked it up, and wow. So nice to see a beacon of hope and civility break out. Would be real nice to see that spread. For those as ignorant as I was

Looks real good on paper. Here's hoping!

Edit: just learned about Jineology. Really cool and definitely worth a read!

Look for "The women's war" by Robert Evans on your favorite podcast app for a really cool report on the place.

Where exactly you see this free and representative democracy?

Most of the refugee has been either attracted because of their academic background or to be cheap labour for the rich to get richer, while the media keep the same "brown people bad" propaganda.

Most of the "Democratic" nations have been targeting any pro-palestanians voices throughout the last year.

It is a free and representative of you are right wing white or rich person..

This democracy has failed its own people with insane wealth gap and failed the world with climate changes, and even failed their own international institute that ment to held international laws.

See how they treat Russia as an invasion, war criminal country, while passing bombs and airplanes to kill Palestinians children and women.
