Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Somewhat similarly to an "evolutionary tree" with shared ancestors, abused people were often abused themselves. "Breaking the chain" of trauma could also be considered a "mutation", in that its another form of nature "rolling the dice" to see what pans out. Conversely, people with happy lives often create happy children, perpetuating the behavior.

Gotta say I'm a bit perplexed by the negative reaction. Not sure what people expect from 'shower thoughts', haha, but such is the internet I guess. Perhaps the internet community is its own "genus" of personality that has independently evolved to the point where I can't comprehend it. :D

I've often been perplexed by negative reactions on lemmy, and previously reddit (where I was once soundly thrashed for saying it was a nice day).

I don't understand what this means. For comparison, my friend said he'd had the revelation that all hate is generational trauma, shortly before he got sent to a mental hospital for walking around naked in the park in the winter. I looked up the definition of generational trauma, but tbh I still don't know what he meant by that. I hope to ask him when gets out.

When I refer to "generational trauma" I'm referring to the psychological and emotional affects of trauma that are passed down. For example, say a war veteran returns home but doesn't get any treatment for their PTSD. They start a family and have kids, but physically abuse them. That child may then grow up to physically abuse their own children, and the cycle continues.

Apparently my friend's perception, which to him seemed like cosmic truth, was that ALL hate is from generational trauma. Can't say I agree - people can certainly develop new prejudices based on their own individual experience. But sometimes an idea that clarifies your own issues can feel like discovering cosmic truth.

None of that matters when most of Humanitys' "Growth" "Medium" is toxic.

Literally a Toxic Culture.

Not conducive for the mental development/physical growth for happy/healthy organisms.

I see your point, though I wouldn't necessarily view society, or a "toxic culture", as the medium, but rather a group of individuals who share similar generational trauma/nurturing. Another way to look at it would be that a Global/National/Regional/Familial "culture is the equivalent to Class/Order/Family/Genus in my example.

What I find interesting about generational trauma/nurturing, is that it usually evolves independent of our blood relations. Friends, teachers, community leaders, etc., each have their own level of influence on both individuals, and the broader culture, which often produces downstream effects for later generations.

I’ve heard that people with post traumatic stress can pass it on to their children, which certainly seems to be the case in my family.

I mean, the world would be a better place with more empathy, no?
