TIL, people actually use Teams outside of being forced to for their job ..

Most of us don't really have a choice. Company decided to Asuzre, so Azure we shall begrudgingly interact with... "please explain why you were on away for 12.7 minutes during your shift yesterday" GROAN.

I had a boss micro-managing me with Lync, the parent to skype4biz, the skype-in-name-only parent to teams.

The short story is, it's cathartic to drop your badge at the front desk and walk out. Line up the new job and then go see the look on his face.

What's a good alternative to Microsoft Teams?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That depends on how you use it.

Pretty much all functions can be replaced by a combination of ActivityPub services and NextCloud.

Or you could use Slack.

I still fail to see the value of ActivityPub besides Lemmy/mastodon.

matrix and xmpp make more sense cause they're meant for messaging and I'd imagine be better able to do video calls

no, where did you get that from?

Sorry misinterpreted the context

For what teams focuses on, matrix. Has channels, big voice calls, etc. missing the sheer set of plugins teams has.

Xmpp/jabber is also good but since it started as a classic instant messaging protocol it's facilities for persistent storage and groups is a bit wonky.

For friend groups you're better off with signal as it has enough administration tools to manage a small group and almost no overhead for the people you want to join you (although they will whine and drag their feet like petulant children because you made them download an app).

VoIP.im and Jami is where I'm going. I hope it's a good combo.
