So she is less afraid of the dogs than of what they could do? But also more afraid of the humans that hurt her than the dogs?
I'm guessing they're her dogs and she wants to get them home so they can help protect her from whomever hurt her.
Honestly sounds like a werewolf story. She's the pack leader and/or acting as bait for a trap.
Edit: Self-inflicted arm-bruises, due to hunger, rage, and or trying to restrain the urge to kill until success is certain.
Sure, and I know that's kind of what Anon is going for, and they're baiting us to believe that the dog at their door is the girl (or at least related to the girl) instead of a separate thing altogether.
I guess I like to ruin fun stories with a (hopefully) rational explanation.
