The Copperheads were anti-Civil War Democrats who felt you could negotiate a peace with the Confederates.
Worth noting that at this point, the Democrats were the modern Republicans. So this would be like MAGA starting a new civil war, leaving the union, and Mitt Romney arguing that a peace could be negotiated.
Confederates: Well, maybe it would have been wise to just let us leave peacefully back there in 1860s instead of all this occupation bullshit? But noooo, big imperial boys were in the mood for war...
