I just came back from a holiday trip in Japan, and I feel I will keep many good memories from that experience. One of them was waking up at 3AM and start hiking around Mount Fuji for sunrise. This felt quite like a unique experience, out of the beaten paths and I'm glad we did it!

What's one good story you'll keep from your last trips?

I’ve traveled around the world a lot and seen many great sites. Nothing compared to the feeling of home when I first reached Scotland. I can neither describe it nor understand it, but I had an overwhelming since of home.

Last autumn my parter and I pulled up to a free camping area in Colorada ran buy the USDA. At some point we heard a lot of sheep bleeting and stepped outside to see 5 people and 3 dogs hearding a large flock of sheep down a mountain across the highway. We grabbed a few beers and a joint and spent the next 4 hours outside watching these sheep get rounded up into a pen in the Campground we were at. This was especially fun because we have a hearding dog of our own and watching these working dogs control hundreds of sheep with minimal input from the sheppards was pretty incredible. Our dog sat and watched with us and was absolutely enamored by the sheep. After the sheep were all penned he was able to go over and say hi to the other dogs. That evening we were on our final bathroom walk of the evening when we got approached by a great perinaise who gave us a check out and then walked back to the pen fence and layed back down. What a good guard dog.

Thank you for the great story. Your dog must still be dreaming of those sheep, haha.

Also love seeing the shepherd dogs at work, very professional.

Wow I've never seen such landscape! Thanks for sharing the photos!

Taiwan. I wanted to try on a pair of shoes. The sales person was gone a long time. We asked what happened to her. They didn't have my size, so she went to all the other shoe stores in on the block checking if they had my size. Incredible customer service. Quite unreal to a USA native.

I was in Japan buying a souvenir for my mom. I had settled on a really nice hanging wall scroll with a landscape view. The salesman packages it up, and I realise that this is going into checked baggage on my flight home and is kind of fragile. I mention this and the guy goes and digs up all sorts of additional packaging, bubble wrap, and twine and ties it up so securely that he cut his fingers on the twine. The man injured himself so that I could get his product safely into an airplane.

That was 19 years ago, and I will never be in that shop again, but I will also never forget that.

My husband and I went to Noord Holland in the Netherlands last year. We had a room in a private house. The owner was this nice old couple. They helped us rent bikes at a local bike shop and we just went everywhere on bike. Every day an hour or two just following the coastline, nothing but the sea, the shore and the sails of the boats in the distance.

We also went to a hat museum. It was a private museum - basically an old woman who'se been collecting and making hats her entire life. A whole room full of hats from all over the world and she could tell you all about them, how they are made, the cultural signifance etc. Her husband made us tea while we sat there and listened.

Definitely an interesting perspective change to hear one's commute can also be considered a holiday activity (am Dutch)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

tell me about it. commuting to work by bike, uphill and into the wind both ways.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

Reading the first sentence I knew bikes would somehow get part of your story lmao! Spontaneously connecting with local people is quite hard as a tourist, you must have been quite open, I really love that!

Going around Vancouver looking for the filming locations from my favourite TV show. Trying to find all the angles to match screenshots from the show. I know it's a bit silly but that TV show inspired me to get into the career I've worked in for the last decade and is a fond memory of growing up. Vancouver is such a nice place, and if I had the money I'd consider moving there.

Went to Japan in 2023 with my family it was about 15 of us. For 2 days I let everyone go ahead and I was just alone in Japan I didn’t do anything crazy just hit up a few stores, wandered around harajuku and then some shrines. Grabbed breakfast lunch and dinner alone. Greatest adventure I ever had

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

I can imagine, it might be time to plan some holiday on your own :)

A couple trip highlights I have are drinking with friends watching the sun set on the Arabian Sea in Goa, and hiking around the Grand Canyon with my grandparents after driving across the US with a sibling to get there

I remember sitting in the bar of the Post Hotel, Lake Louise Village with a glass of Dalwhinnie, listening to the pianist play the Jurassic Park theme just to see if anyone would recognise it. I was overwhelmed by the realisation that I was living one of my dreams to visit Western Canada, one of the most beautiful places on Earth. I admit I cried.

Also, what a wonderful hotel! I'd recommend it in a heartbeat.

That sounds lovely, I hope musicians are aware they can turn a good simple moment into a memory for life..

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

Well, I certainly told him!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Lake Louise Village [...] Western Canada

You mean MID-Western Canada. Western Canada is a little bit to the left.

Had an interesting conversation with a Syrian when flying from Kuwait to Jordan. I didn't know Arabic; he didn't know English. We used Google Translate to talk.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

That's so cute!

Toss up between saying BVI a year after Irma, it was so quiet and empty. We spent the day on the beach at Bitter End (its absolutely amazing now its reopened) and if you know that beach its never empty except we had it to ourselves. Went to a bar in Little Bay and just spent the day hanging out with the owner, only ones there, told to help ourselves to beer from the fridge and had dinner with them. BVI is never that quiet during main season, its usually busy to packed.

Other one is Antigua during COVID, quiet beyond belief. Restaurants only allowed to do take out, so they would bring you the meals to your boat. Had a BBQ of the best steak and lobster on the main beach at Barbuda cooked just for us. Last night they opened up restaurants for dine in, only customers at this fancy Mexican fusion restaurant on the beach. They were so happy to have people back, ended up sharing the head chefs bottle of (very expensive) wine as we chatted at the end of the meal.

Most of my favorite holiday stories are when we have gone somewhere and its empty of tourists and just pretty quiet overall.

I feel you, there is nothing worst than a place full of tourists doing the same stuff.. It just feels so unauthentic.. Unfortunately I had that feeling in Japan's most popular spots.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah Japan is awful for that and the tourists have only gotten worse with their behaviour over time. I did the main spots of Kyoto once, biggest mistake of my trip.

If you avoid the popular spots entirely then its usually pretty easy to find places that are more authentic. But its been a few years since I last went, its a very tough holiday for me as I am coeliac and the Japanese just do not take gluten allergies seriously (they had something like three people in five years diagnosed in total) so I have to self cater the entire trip.

Flying the Millennium Falcon in Disneyland.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I hope you didn't crash it!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

I did not! :)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Was the line really short when you went? My sisters and I did it twice and barely had to wait.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We went when Rise of the Restiance had just opened, so everyone was lined up for that. :)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Ah I see, we went last month and Rise of the Resistance had the longest wait of all the rides. It wasn't terrible though, seemed to move pretty quickly.

I jave a picture of me standing under Delicate Arch in Utah. I look so tiny next to that huge arch.

Arriving to Galapagos islands, in just 2-3 blocks that we walked we got to see so much life! Not the giant tortoises though. But lizards, birds, and even some underwater sea life. A local fishermen was emptying his net, taking out some giant lobsters. It was the first time I saw these animals, apparently the usual are rather small in comparison and taste better, but in the ocean they can grow A LOT. These were easily the size of a shepherd's dog..

PS. Same trip, another experience(s) were snorkeling or diving :) if you love nature, I recommend going there..

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Thanks for the recommendation! I love nature oriented holidays

My family and I went to San Cristobal de las Casas, it is a very rainy place there. A guy were selling some umbrellas, let's say, 50 pesos, by the time, that would be like 3 dollars. We declined to buy one kindly saying no. We keep walking, when suddenly started to rain, my sister ran to buy an umbrella, but the guy said that now the umbrellas price was 200 pesos, like 12 dollars. We hear it and started to lost our asses laughing. We didn't buy anything, it could keep raining and we all get wet, but we had luck, and stop raining right away. San Cristobal de las Casas it's beatiful, but that guy stole the reflectors and it is what we remember the most.
