I reinstalled windows using a bootable USB a few times... I remember that last time I had all MS office apps installed and I deleted them cause I didn't want to use them on desktop, only via browser...

Now I need them, but this time, after reinstalling, I didn't find them (probably cause I logged with the previous account).

Am I doing something wrong this time, when reinstalling? (Not resetting completely or something) Or is it bc of the account? Would creating a new one resolve the issue?

Thank you in advance!

I looked into wf.msc (windows' firewall) and it does not allow any prioritization. So you cannot exclude all traffic except from two exceptions. Any broad block rule supercedes any specific allow rule.

I also tried setting up firewall rules using powershell wich allows more finegrained control. But that failed as well....

I want to connect android studio to github so i can work on my FOSS apps from anywhere in the world. I also want to use virtualbox to connect to the great onlines safely.

How did you resolve this issue?

Hi, i don't know if its the right community to post this. Basically i had my os sensitivity on master plus software set to 5 before i knew what it was and used 600dpi. then i realized why 400dpi felt so slow and i changed to 400 and os sensitivity 6. at every reboot it change just the os sensitivity to 5 but kept every other change. tried saving a profile, updating software (1.9.6) but still problem persist. i tried searching and it seems to be a know problem but didnt found solution. no big deal to change every reboot but i'll still try if anyone have a solution. thanks in advance to anybody who will respond:)

Hey,

So I've been connecting to an ftp server which I worked on with apps like GNOME Builder, and backed up the contents of with Pika Backup, connecting to it via the GNOME Files application, Nautilus, from the Network tab.

Recently, apps stopped being able to read files I opened with the file picker hosted on the ftp server, and after a lot of debugging I realised that was because Nautilus had for some reason switched from mounting the files under /run/user/1000/gvfs/ftp_address to the more abstract path ftp://ftp_address, under the virtual directory computer:///. Now apps can't read those files as they are not mounted under an actual path.

I couldn't find a way in Nautilus, FileZilla, or Dolphin to mount the ftp server files under a specified path /mnt/ftp_username, or even to put it back to the unwieldy but still working path it was under before, using a GUI.

I was recommended by an LLM assistant to use the curlftpfs command, but even with several variations of a command such as the following

sudo curlftpfs -v -o "uid=$UID,gid=$GID" ftp://username:correct%20password@ftp_address /mnt/ftp_username

it always gave the same error

Error setting curl:

I'm not sure what else to try, could I have some advice please?

ive tried endless amounts of examples scripts ive found online but none work on autohotkey v2.

im playing a game that requires me to hold control to jump but its hurting my finger. Ideally i want to press a shortcut like Shift + ` or double click the control key and have it leave the control key pressed until i toggle it off with the same shortcut or double pressing control.

One of our fellow amateurs needs help to recover their Google account. They have the credentials, but no longer have access to their recovery phone number.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed? My Google-fu is only unearthing unhelpful forum posts without any firm process described by Google.

Anyone have any links or contacts?

Hello everyone. First post in tech support.

I have been using Joplin and fed up with its accumulating errors. What alternatives that support similar features do you recommend? (ranking from most important)

  • Can insert image
  • Hyperlink by markdown language
  • Supports LaTeX
  • Supports Mermaid flowchart
  • Export to PDF
  • Can handle a lot of notes
  • Windows and Android
  • Migrate a chunk of markdown files all at once

Thanks a lot. Have a nice day :)

EDIT: strangely enough, it has a similar temperature on high load

EDIT2: Yes I think I will order thermal paste

EDIT: So, I tried a few things, including using a publicly available HTTP proxy list (and using the force IPv4 option). The issue is seemingly well known - and there does not seem to be a good solution. When trying out the proxies, they were also very unreliable, and I found reports of people having their IP blocked again if they changed it. I might look into setting up a small Raspi-like system at home to use at a self-configured proxy that can run without drawing a lot of electricity. That might be able to fool YT better than publicly available proxies, as it would appear as a residential network to them.

But overall, I think this problem might depend on yt-dlp updates and/or YT changing policies, ultimately.

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.abnormalbeings.space/post/142454

So, at the moment, I have the feature to mirror channels or import from URLs disabled for my PeerTube server (although it should work fine, for platforms other than YT). Trying to import from YT-URLs does result in errors every time, and from my research and bug-hunting, it seems to be a problem with yt-dlp not having necessary cookies and being prompted to log in by the YT bot avoidance systems.

Now, I don't really want to import any credentials from my personal YT account to anything that will ultimately run outside my control, if that is at all avoidable. Does someone here have any experience with other ways to get it running? So far, I haven't found anything myself.

I got a Dell Latitude 7400 2 in 1 from my job they were going to ewaste. I daily drive KDE Neon on it and I love it. However, one of its two USB type C ports isn’t working for charging or data transfer. I inspected the port but found no obvious damage. How can I troubleshoot and fix this? I’ve searched YouTube and online sites but haven’t found helpful guidance.

Hi, I'm on slrpnk.net and yesterday I made a weekly announcement post to [email protected] I think you can see that post here:

However later I noticed that if I looked at the community in private mode, my post wasn't there! I just now reposted it with a slightly different title and now if you look at the community it is there:

So I'm thinking... the first post didn't federate? Is that the issue? If so, why? Or is it just a bug and if so who do I report it to? Thanks for any feedback.

EDIT: Solved, thanks to [email protected] pointing out here, that I was missing a proper domain for smtp_server. I thought I had tried that already, but I probably had some other settings borked up when I did.

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.abnormalbeings.space/post/94985

So, I am currently in the process of setting up a PeerTube and Lemmy instance, both on a dedicated Server running Debian 12. PeerTube seems to work properly by now, but the SMTP settings for Lemmy have been a bit of a headscratcher, and I wasn't able to find a solution.

To set up Lemmy, I followed the "from scratch" guide, and, besides the mail issue, it seems like everything else is working so far.

Note that I am currently in the process of learning-by-doing with this whole project. So, I would not rule out, that I may have overlooked something really obvious and stupid, sorry for taking your time, then.

My settings in /opt/lemmy/lemmy-server/lemmy.hjson:

  email: {
    # Hostname and port of the smtp server
    smtp_server: "localhost:587"
    # Login name for smtp server
    smtp_login: "lemmymail"
    # Password to login to the smtp server
    smtp_password: "REDACTED"
    # Address to send emails from, eg "[email protected]"
    smtp_from_address: "[email protected]"
    # Whether or not smtp connections should use tls. Can be none, tls, or starttls
    tls_type: "starttls"
  }

The error message I get, when trying both resetting a password, or applying as a new user:

WARN Error encountered while processing the incoming HTTP request: lemmy_server::root_span_builder: EmailSendFailed: Connection error: Connection error: invalid peer certificate: NotValidForName

"lemmymail" exists as a local user on the server.

# dovecot --version 2.3.19.1 (9b53102964)

If needed, I can provide additional info from dovecot and/or postfix configurations in the backend. Similar settings as above have worked for PeerTube. As a reference - these are working in production.yaml there:

Peertube smtp settings

# SMTP server to send emails
smtp:
  # smtp or sendmail
  transport: smtp
  # Path to sendmail command. Required if you use sendmail transport
  sendmail: null
  hostname: mail.abnormalbeings.space
port: 587 # If you use StartTLS: 587
  username: '[email protected]'
  password: 'REDACTED'
tls: false # If you use StartTLS: false
  disable_starttls: false
ca_file: null # Used for self signed certificates
  from_address: '[email protected]'

Things I have tried:

  • Changing the user from and to a user with @abnormalbeings.space in the string
  • Changing the user to one I know works, as I use them for automatic PeerTube mail messages
  • Changing the hostname to a FQDN url instead of localhost (without https://)
  • Trying different ports (did not expect that to work)
  • changing tls_type to "none"
  • changing the Password to one containing no special characters (and back)
  • changing smtp_from_address to an actually existing user
  • restarting nginx, dovecot, postfix, lemmy-server and lemmy-ui for good measure after every change

I'm not sure how to phrase this question, so apologies if it sounds ridiculous.

I recently switched to Mozilla after uBlock was killed off by Chrome. I swapped all my saved passwords from my Google/Chrome account to my new Mozilla account. My husband also signed us up for a 1Password account. Here's where my question might get confusing....

Lets say I make a new account on a site and I'm on Mozilla. The new login info is now saved to Mozilla, and 1Password. Is there a way to set it up so whatever gets saved to 1Password transfers the login info to my Google account as well? I have an Android phone, so the password info is handy to have built into my Google account on my phone when I need it.

Or should I just download the 1P mobile app, and rely on that exclusively for passwords I need when I'm on my phone?

I've been struggling to find any resource for mac tech support/general questions. The r/mac subreddit is more of a cult or something(same with apple forums except its non competent apple employees), I've had the problem of siri running in the background (while having siri disabled) and it using over 100% of a cpu core, bringing the temps up by 20-30 degrees while idle, and the only answer I've got there was on the lines of "trust you're computer bro, it knows more than you". I'd love a community to ask mac specific questions and not have people who get personally offended when someone criticizes or points out a problem on apple devices.

So I have an aging DellM4800 15.6" laptop. It's actually built to last, upgradeable MXM A GPU, replaceable battery, professional keyboard, good build quality, easy to get to parts, and has a great matt screen. I use it as a portable laptop, rather than a mobile desktop unit.

Still, Somehow the hinge on one side has become warped. I have no clear idea but suspect that from where it used to be on my lap, the rear fans blew its heat onto it. Or maybe it took a knock somewhere. This would be quite a knock.

Anyway, the plastic cracked and broke off due to the warped metal, and the one side feels a bit, loose and wobbly. It opens fine-ish and just makes a clicking sound each time its opened.

Are there usually generic metal hinges for laptop screens or are they unique to each device? I don't particularly want to have to buy a whole new screen or worse, a new case just for hinges for one side. The missing plastic is small and I can deal with it, but would like to get this one side feeling as solid as the rest of the case.

So I have a text file* on my phone (android) that I wanted to share on Discord (the file is way over the character limit, so sending it as a message doesn't work.) How would you do it ? It really shouldn't be that hard...

*more info : this is a replay file from a game, so I can access it from the game and copy it to clipboard. Then I can paste it to the notepad app to save it, but I'm not sure that means it's stored as a text file on my phone (notably, I've not been able to find it from anywhere other than my notepad app).

The workaround I found is pasting it into Google Docs and then access it via Google Drive on my computer, but it isn't ideal (and notably requires me to have access to my computer).

(also obligatory rant about how it wouldn't be that hard if phones didn't obfuscate the file system so much)

Hi guys. I have a question related to my screen. I've got my laptop (Win11) hooked up to an usb-c hub that's got a power source, keyboard, mouse and screen connected to it. However when I plug that in I get an "error" message like this and sometimes the screen "switches off", as in goes black, and then right back on again.

Is there a log somewhere I can look at to figure out what's going on? Anyone already know what's up? I an error on the monitor at times about "no digital signal" or something to that effect.

What I find weird is that sometimes it works perfectly for hours, sometimes it blinks constantly, sometimes it just goes completely dark and I can't seem to find any logic to it. It just seems random.

Earbuds are only 1 month old, they did not have this issue before

Now when the buds reach 60% battery it drains and goes from 60 to 0 in 10 or 20 minutes (not joking), thus only giving me 2 hours of battery life.

Earbuds and phone (Galaxy A55 5G) are up to date. ANC is on as well but still it shouldn't cause them to drain the battery so fast

USB-C headache (lemmy.world)

I have several usb-c devices:

My Samsung Galaxy phone

My camera battery charger

My rechargeable head torch

My portable battery/device charger

I would like: One cable to rule them all, one cable to find them, One cable to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them; In the Land of my travel shit where the shadows lie.

What wattage, version, output, recommendations can you give me.

Currently I have 5 cables, but I should really only need one.

Thanks in advance

EDIT2: Hello, person most likely from the future. I have solved this by reinstalling dovecot and basically re-doing everything from scratch (after I tried, briefly, to get 2.4 running, but there are no easy guides yet, and I am in fact a newb).

So - the problem was this: I was following this guide, which is fine, but I missed, that it needs a config that includes %n instead of %u as the username format. So, when I looked up solutions to my problem, and - having forgotten that - updated the config to %Lu, the system wasn't able to find any usernames any more, because looking up the whole name was returning in a (frustratingly silent in the journalctl output) error.

switching it to %Ln did the trick! In hindsight, that makes all the sense!

EDIT: Okay, after some more testing and such, I think something I did yesterday evening in a sleepy stupor must have borked things even more. Now, the mailserver seems to not accept any emails sent to it, but it can still send outbound mails. I will try more stuff today to find out what the hell I managed to mess up yesterday - you are still welcome to give some advice to the original problem, though.

So, this has been a headscratcher for me ever since I began setting up my own Fediverse stuff here. It's on a dedicated Server, running Debian 12. I followed a guide to install and set up a mailserver with dovecot - and it seems to work fine, generally. I can connect to it with Thunderbird, the PeerTube server can connect to it (I still have to update the Lemmy SMTP-config) - but if I try to mail one of my users, the address remains case-sensitive.

So:
Expected behaviour - mails are delivered to both [email protected], as well as [email protected]

Actual behaviour - mails to the former result in a "Undelivered Mail returned to sender", with "User doesn't exist" as the server answer, while the latter address works fine.

#!include auth-sql.conf.ext
#!include auth-ldap.conf.ext
#!include auth-passwdfile.conf.ext
#!include auth-checkpassword.conf.ext
#!include auth-static.conf.ext

If needed, I can of course also provide other config files. I haven't found much else as a solution, besides changing the auth_username_format value here, which also seemed intuitive to me.

I have also since tried restarting the service, restarting the server, searching more on Duck Duck Go and only finding the same solution.

Have I maybe accidentally edited a template config file instead of a live one? That was a guess I had, but then I couldn't find much about that when searching for it.

Thanks in advance for your time!

(Also, if anyone knows good guides to get my mailserver compliant with gmail and other big mail services, DKIM and such, that will be my next project)

Hey, I’m looking for some kind of way to be able to remotely turn my car alarm on/off, and also possibly be notified about activity and motion around my car.

Any ideas for reliable stuff like this please?

I need it because of serious issues with people vandalizing my car

This is probably my fault as I was debloating using App Manager (from F-Droid) & apparently didn't pay enough attention to what I was doing. I feel pretty stupid for not making a restore point first. Can someone help me figure out which app I need to reinstall? I would really really appreciate it. Even just a source on where I could find this info would be really appreciated

On a non-rooted Moto G 5G, Android version 14, happy to give other device info if needed

At work I got Windows 11 24H2. It has a bug, known from september 2024, that resizes all the windows in a tiny corner.

Basically, when the screen shuts off for standby, Windows thinks the resolution now is no more 3840x2160 but 640x480. EVERYTHING gets resized in the top left corner at 640x480 and it's ULTRA INFURIATING

Because microsoft took 3 years to fix the taskbar and 4 years to fix the "restore explorer windows at boot" checkbox, I'm not confident that they will fix this issue in this decade, and I must find a solution, or i will become crazy.

Workarounds tried:

  • using fancywm - every time i wake up screen i need to wait 10 seconds to see all the windows rearranging and resizing and it's still infuriating.
  • disabling monitor timeout and replacing it with a screensaver - I'm at work and group policy mandate monitor timeout at 5 minutes
  • updating the AMD drivers
  • uninstalling 24H2 - the admin removed the uninstall files, i can't revert to previous version *uninstalling powertoys in the chance if it was caused by fancyzones
  • changing UI scale from 150% to 100%

What I did not try:

  • replace the displayport cable with a hdmi one (but it should have only 30hz refresh rate in that case)
  • use a dummy video adapter
  • use a lower resolution
  • wipe and reinstall everything, i have too many stuff with too many settings
