Welcome!

Can you imagine, years ago how the internet was before? We know Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, Youtube. We knew blogger, Tumblr, Skyrock... and long before, it was the forum era as phpBB..and mail-lists.

And now with ActivityPub, we are reshaping the web, and achieving much with lots of freedom. So thank you all, and welcome 🀟😁

I also recently noticed a community that didn't seem aware of the shutdown: https://lemm.ee/post/67257681

Yep just lazy. I've already joined another instance but not switched yet.

Good to know!

self high five

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 weeks ago

The cuttlefish would be ashamed of this.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 3 weeks ago

Just being lazy setting up a new account, probably on zip

[–] [email protected] 11 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

I’ve seen nothing about this until this post so thank you. I’m using Voyager on iOS. It has somehow shielded me from this reality. Which instance should I join instead? I chose lemm.ee because they didn’t defederate other instances as much as most others seem to do.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 weeks ago

Lemmy.zip and dbzer0 get recommended often for having similar federation stances.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Happy to help!

https://lemmy.zip/ is a solid choice. Similar moderation policy than lemm.ee.

Monthly reports: https://lemmy.zip/post/39959863

Lots of lemm.ee users moving there: https://lemmy.zip/post/40323214

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 weeks ago

Thanks friend, I’ll jump on lemmy.zip if they’ll have me. 2 million unique visitors in a month is more than respectable.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

All good now, thanks again :)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 weeks ago

Enjoy lemmy.zip!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Make sure and subscribe to the "meta" community on whatever new instance you choose. That's where stuff like this is gonna be posted, that's where the lemm.ee shutdown was first announced.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I don’t subscribe to anything, I just browse All, sorted by top 6 hours. Every post I see is from a different micro community and instance so I never saw the point of curating a subscription list like I did on Reddit. Thanks anyways!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

I do the exact same. The meta community is the only one I subscribe to. Makes it easier to check it periodically for announcements.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

I asked this question a while ago here https://discuss.tchncs.de/post/37809092/18820669 and got some more-or-less helpful answers.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Some communities seem to be going on as if it's normal. I notice this in the feeds when I find new lemm.ee communities I haven't added.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 weeks ago

Isn't it normal for us to pretend everything is ok while the apocalypse is upon us?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

If they can't be bothered to read the stickied post that they all can see, then what else are you going to do for them?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

The pinned post is only visible in the Local feed, not Subscribed or Local: https://lemm.ee/

It's not guaranteed how some apps deal with it either.

Bringing it to the lemm.ee people you seem could be a way: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/47084070/19534238

We definitely received several notices all over the 'verse. I've been checking out multiple alternatives. The only way someone is unaware of the closure is if they're not active. In any case, what's to worry about? One day, some inactive users will not be able to log in to a closed instance. They'll have to join somewhere else.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

It's visible in All and in Local it's only not visible in Subscribed if someone is not subbed to that comm.

I like your enthusiasm about it. I just don't know what else could be done other than hounding everyone you see about it.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I'll be honest, if I was off Lemmy for the week it was initially announced, I probably would have missed it. I haven't seen any notification in my app, or come across the sticky in my normal browsing.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

The only way you'd never see the sticky is if you only browse Subscribed and are not subbed to c/Meta. Every other browsing option shows the sticky.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

I usually only use Subscribed

I haven't switched yet but I don't see the point I have until the end of the month why would I bother doing the move now

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 weeks ago

As long as you're aware, that's good

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

Doing it before the 30th has the advantage of being able to export subscriptions and import them into the new account. I guess that's not possible anymore when it shuts down.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I’m checking in on missed messages

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I did that and had nothing and got sad and removed my account from my apps.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

I just did again and found your reply :)

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

In my case, yes I am worried I'm lazy enough that I won't switch to a new account in time.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Well it doesn't really matter whether we switch now or on July 1st, I guess. Only good thing about doing it now is the possibility to export subscriptions and import them into the new account.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

Switching now allows you to indeed troubleshoot the migration of your settings. It works most of the time, but it can be a bit clunky

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 weeks ago

I'm just lazy. I'll swap over in the next few days. Probably...

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Hmm, as long as the comms local to lemm.ee have moved and they all have a pinned post stating where they moved to, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

[email protected] is still open, I posted a message yesterday about the move, someone still made two posts here today.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

That's the real issue in this case IMO. It might just be they are busy. But really contributors like you that are very very active helping other users and contributors, I really appreciate the effort!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 weeks ago

I will use it until it stops working, and then I will grieve

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

walls... closing in....

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

Soooo isn't there anyone willing to take over?
