Those of you who are in a relationship: How do you deal with the need to be alone at times (as in the only one at home)?
Communication seems to be key for me. explain to my wife that I am overstimulated or over stressed and need to chill for a bit and will go do an activity that calms me. It does take people who are willing to accept people whose minds and emotions don’t work the same way. But generally being honest about how I’m feeling with people and saying if I need a break has worked well.
I've almost always needed alone time to cope. Just a small safe space I can go to is usually enough for me.
In my previous relationship I had a lot of difficulties with not having a safe space in the house. It caused a lot of extra stress and a really bad panic attack. Going for walks outside helped a little, but in the end I just had to leave.
I'm now married and have rarely had any issues with my current partner. I feel safe and comfortable around them. When I'm getting overwhelmed, I only need to ask once for quite time and they stop talking to me.
My partner would absolutely make a safe space for me if I needed it, but I just haven't needed it yet.
I've never tried, but I assume I could just ask if they're willing to spend some time out of the house at a library or park. It would be unreasonable to frequently request, but I assume it would be ok occasionally.
