I wonder if they will ever release a definitive edition of The Sims 3 or 4. Even with a 90% discount the number of DLCs keep complete versions of the game rather expensive.

Tangentially related but I was browsing the list of Steam curators and I was surprised by how many of them are dedicated to discouraging people from buying games from specific countries.

I agree it would be more honest but I'm wondering how the early access label would effect their sales.

Games like Project Zomboid and 7 Days To Die got a decent amount of attention from sites like YouTube but I'm wondering how many people stick around for the trickle of updates or will care when the game transition into a full release.

This is setting aside ethics obviously.

I feel like having the early access label makes me more apprehensive about buying a game because of the amount of abandoned early access titles I own and being wary of it not having an ending. In the case of No Man's Sky I feel like I would be less grateful for all the content adding updates. I might view it as just working towards a completed project rather than doing something nice for the community or doing it out of passion.

Buying a broken game does make me a lot less likely to buy new games from a developer immediately after the release.

Other examples could be Cyberpunk 2077, Fallout 76, Halo MCC, and the remastered Grand Theft Auto trilogy.

That's how I ended up with so many games in my backlog

Are you looking for a percentage amount or a dollar amount? Which would seem more appealing?

Here's some on my list:

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 - I do not want to deal with the Rockstar Games launcher.

  • Tom Clancy's Breakpoint - The game's add-on packs feel like Ubisoft is trying to nickel and dime gamers who would instinctively buy the GOTY equivalent of a title. I do not want to deal with a Ubisoft launcher or account.

  • Zombi - According to the Steam reviews it required a Uplay login to validate the game before you play and that version of the Ubisoft service no longer exists. This seems to have been rectified but I still don't trust it and don't want to go through the refund process if it hasn't.

  • Skyrim VR - I've already bought too many copies of Skyrim.

A bit of a "this is why I pirate" thread but more targeted at individual games.

Kind of a neat concept.

Reminds me of projects that use open source engine recreations to create their own standalone games.

For example the dhwem3 (Doom 3) standalone game Rivensin.

I like that. It makes a lot more sense than living in a single room and slapping down additional ones like it's one of those modular sea container homes

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

Fair enough. It is a lot more niche but it still becomes quite distracting.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

I think they are separate and different enough to be enjoyed individually

Upvotes are meaningless on Lemmy and there's usually duplicate communities hosted on different instances.

Why don't you just join Exploding Heads and get it over with Tesla licker?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

Linkin Park's In the End but the MIDI version

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

It reminds me a bit of Garmin acquiring Pebble and discontinuing support. This does sound significantly worse though

I'm going to start off by saying I would recommend watching The Gorge as blind as you can. The trailer doesn't spoil much but it does reveal the framework and direction of the story. If you like the 'vibe' or setting of Annihilation though you may like it.

If you don't mind a bit of a reveal this is what I mean by the last part:

spoilerBoth movies are about a quarantined area where mysteries lurk.

It's near-future sc-fi but leans a bit more into horror and action than Annihilation.

Here's what I liked and disliked about the movie (real spoilers):

spoilerI went into The Gorge after only seeing the movie poster so I thought it was going to be some kind of Cold War-style forbidden love movie. I was glad to see it evolve into something else.

What I liked the most was the setting and premise. A heavily defended remote and isolated area full of mutated mysterious creatures and plants where attacks are infrequent but when they happen they're in World War Z style is something I find neat. I feel like I see elements of this regularly in video games but less so in movies.

Once they were inside the gorge I would have liked to have seen the mutations as a bit more grand or awe inspiring like they appeared in Annihilation. Maybe a bit less humanoid. That might be a bit hard though considering how dark and foggy it was and how they immediately were trying to get out rather than explore.

I'm using a PSVR headset with iVRy but I haven't gotten controller tracking working. I'm wondering what games or applications I can use in the meantime while I work on this.

If I recall Trover Saves the Universe has what I'm looking for where you can use the headset and a typical game controller.

EmuVR has controller support. So does VorpX but I don't know if motion controls are needed for accessing menus and what not. I imagine Skybox would be fine.

I've tried searching Steam for controller friendly + VR but I am not sure how many games are coming up because they have a full VR mode that would require motion controllers. It seems like several driving and flight simulator games would work just fine in this configuration.

These are the patch notes from the news section of each game on Steam. Considering the amount of crash-related fixes I thought some individuals might find it interesting. Would you want to see more patch notes posted in this community? Let me know.

If you are still running into issues with The Sims 2 I would recommend checking out The Sims 2 Starter Pack on GitHub. Up until the release of the legacy collection edition it was the recommended way to play the game across various Sims 2 communities. I imagine several fixes may still translate over to this new version.

The same individual also has a version for the original Sims. The GitHub page can be found here but I haven't seen it as widely recommended. If you have or do try it please respond below or post to the community about your experience.

The Sims

Fixed Issues:

  • Alt+Tab or Alt+Enter can sometimes cause a crash

  • Alt+Enter can sometimes cause the Windows title bar to be hidden

  • Alt+Enter can sometimes not toggle between full screen and windowed modes

  • On some systems, The Sims can appear to launch and then immediately exit (no splash screen displayed)

  • The Sims should now launch in most situations

  • In some cases where there is an underlying graphics issue, The Sims will display a message
  • Some players are unable to click on various parts of the neighborhood map

  • The travel screen, when traveling between neighborhoods/worlds, can sometimes appear garbled or glitched

  • The Sims might crash if you are not on the default neighborhood, interact with another Sim, and then save

  • When using Alt+Enter to cycle window and zoom sizes, the HUD could be clipped. At this zoom level, The Sims will now instead clip from the top of the screen.

  • In some situations in windowed mode the title bar might not be visible

  • The Family friends counter could sometimes not be visible

  • A memory issue could lead to various unexpected behaviors after playing for a period of time (random crashes, sluggish performance, missing objects, etc)

  • The mood level arrows and mood bars had visual artifacts in some cases

  • The mouse scroll wheel could take a lot of clicks to zoom

  • Some players were encountering a “Vulkan device” error at launch

General Notes:

  • Several players have had problems (e.g. walls, floors, objects not showing up; game not launching; other oddities) that are addressed by updating graphics drivers to the latest versions. Please make sure your drivers are up to date.

  • The Sims game window is of a fixed size that can’t have its basic properties changed after it has launched. Moving the window from a monitor to another with a different, lesser resolution can lead to unexpected results, possibly even crashes. If you want to run The Sims on that second monitor please use the option “-monitor:” to force it to launch on the other monitor. “0” is your primary monitor, a second monitor is “1” and so on. We are investigating adding this as a menu option in the future.

  • In some situations, players have noted that music only plays in Live mode. Please check your computer sound options and make sure that everything is properly configured (e.g. on a 5.1 surround system make sure that your center speaker is functioning).

  • You might be prompted to “Enable the help system” every time you return to a house. This is the game trying to have you complete the tutorial. This will continue to happen until you complete the tutorial.

  • There are some hardware configurations that we are seeing a disproportionate number of errors on and are actively investigating. Systems based on Intel ARC GPUs, Snapdragon laptops with Qualcomm Adreno X1-85 GPU, NVIDIA T600 GPU laptops are being investigated

  • Users that have experienced problems with getting an error indicating a lack of Vulkan compatible devices have reported that in some cases removing "OpenCL™, OpenGL®, and Vulkan® Compatibility Pack" can resolve the issue.

  • When you want to import Sims or Houses, the game could look in the wrong directory to find them. You can now work around this by placing them in “Program Files/Maxis/The Sims/UserData/Import”

  • We are investigating an issue where traveling between worlds can result in crashes in some situations

The Sims 2

Fixed Issues:

  • Alt-Tab or Alt+Enter can sometimes cause a crash

  • Some players on EA App received an error message indicating that certain needed files were corrupt

  • The game would sometimes crash after creating a family

  • The game sometimes launched at a small resolution (800x600) and then scaled that small format to fill the entire monitor

  • In certain situations the game will launch and then immediately show a “DirectX” error, requiring use of the “-w” option to work around the problem

  • Sometimes a Sim (or multiple Sims) would disappear after the player moves to another lot or neighborhood, or after leaving and rejoining the game despite saving

  • Sometimes non-adult Sims (children, pets) would disappear

  • Some interactions that result in a transferable reward (e.g. a dog returns from work) can cause the game to crash

  • Addressed some infinite loading screen issues

  • Addressed some situations related to the error “Some needed files were corrupted during the installation”

  • Addressed some situations where the game could terminate with a pop-up message when creating a family or when entering a pre-made lot

  • The game could get stuck on the color swap tool

  • The Sims’ voices could be of low quality

  • The Sims’ voices could be very quiet

  • The custom skin window couldn’t be closed in some cases

  • The “Graphics Rules.sgr” file was missing a rule that could cause “D3D” error messages

  • During the Alien Abduction cutscene, sometimes audio could drop out and a Sim could reset

  • Sims could be unable to eat cooked food

  • The game could sometimes present a loading screen that could not progress

  • Sims could sometimes disappear

General notes:

  • Several players have had problems that are addressed by updating graphics drivers to the latest versions. Please make sure your drivers are up to date.

  • Remember that the “boolProp testingCheatsEnabled” cheat will cause the game to periodically show various dialogue boxes with debugging information in them. The cheat is working as expected.

  • We are investigating an issue where during certain cinematic events (such as Alien Abduction), the Sim can be reset and the event fails. While we are investigating this, you can work around the issue by making certain there are no other Sims on the lot to observe the event.

  • In some cases, issues that have been addressed might have corrupted game saves before they were addressed (e.g. when Sims could disappear). In these cases you should try starting with a fresh save as the game won’t be able to correct the corruption, and working with corrupted saves can lead to unexpected behavior.

  • While the Alien Abduction scene now works, the scene is still missing the alien baby. We’re working on that. In the meanwhile you will have the alien baby in the game once the scene is done.

  • Some players have tried using Windows shortcut keys to move the full-screen game to another monitor. When in full screen mode the game should not be moved to another monitor or this may cause issues.

If I recall correctly this pack was also missing from the Ultimate Collection version that was given away for free on Origin years ago.

To summarize some points from the video:

  • Some of the original Sim's issues with larger resolutions, such as the UI appearing small or not being able to zoom in all the way, can be fixed by setting your monitor to 720p.

  • Both games have issues crashing.

  • The Sims 2 version has all the DLC except the IKEA pack which can be re-added with a fan patch.

  • It is not really recommended now until more of the bugs and stability issues are fixed. Before you buy it LGR recommends checking out the refund policy.

Did I miss anything else?

So far I have my original PSVR headset connected to my PC and I'm using the premium version of iVRy. This allows me to use the actual headset but I don't have any body/control.

I believe the PS Move controllers can be used if I pair them with Bluetooth and using "iVRy PSMoveServiceEx for SteamVR on Steam" but I think this gives me button input, momentum, and rotational support. No tracking.

I own both Xbox 360 Kinect and PS4 camera to USB adapters. It seems like both work with Driver4VR but a lot of the setup videos are dated. Using the PS4 camera configuration option causes the application to crash and the UI has changed for example.

K2VR, now known as Amethyst, says it can do lower body tracking but people seem to recommend it for overall tracking.

iVRy seems to recommend dual PlayStation Eye cameras which I do not have.

Right now I have everything setup through iVRy and I believe I have Amethyst setup correctly. My test game was Arizona Sunshine and my hands are appearing as in my head and not moving. The game says to stretch out your arms and press both triggers but this doesn't seem to work. I don't know if it is a button input thing or the fact that the game detects my hands as not moving.

I'll probably find another game to narrow this down.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I've been reading a lot guides but they're mostly from 5 or 6 years ago. Many projects have ceased development or rebranded. Most posts now are about the PSVR2.

I'd be happy to try and answer any questions from people who want to try this out themselves.

Apparently they are compatible with modern operating systems but I'm wondering to what degree and if the modded releases fans put together (The Sims 2 Starter Pack a prime example) are going to be better in some aspects.

I'll start by saying I had a bit of trouble wording the title but I'll try to elaborate on it. I find it can be a bit daunting at times figuring out what a decent entry point is in a series of video games without searching online first. Sometimes there will be ten games released across three different generation of consoles with reboots, prequels, and remasters and you can feel a bit left out of the loop if you start with the most recent release.

I'm wondering where people would recommend starting in other popular series like Nier, Final Fantasy, Armored Core, Ace Combat, Assassins Creed, Metal Gear, Metroid, Resident Evil, and so on.

It might make for a fun bit of Friday discussion and encourage some people to try out some new games.

Here's my example:

With the Fallout series I'd say you could easily start with any game because you have a new protagonist each time and a lot of the lore is reintroduced. The exception being Fallout 2 because it feels a bit more like a direct sequel to the original.

I would probably recommend Fallout New Vegas as a starting point because it's the fan favorite, has a few quality of life upgrades over Fallout 3, Fallout 4 adds a lot of extra mechanics to the game so going backwards in the series if you wanted more Fallout could feel a tad awkward and take some readjusting if you are accustomed to them, and the classic Fallout games can be a bit of a challenge if you aren't used to old school RPGs.
