Haha I have definitely come a long way from where I was even a couple of years ago. And back then, it was a lot of progress from a couple of years earlier than that. I don't notice it until someone new comes along asking really basic questions and suddenly you're the one answering instead of asking!

ProtonMail is not owned by a trump supporter. Its CEO is a Trump supporter.

The implications might be the same but can we at least be accurate about it. Proton is majority owned by the Proton Foundation, they are transitioning towards a non-profit structure.

If it fails the facial recognition then it just goes to a person to check, so if it's not obvious it might just get approved anyway.

If you have a big mole and they notice it's on the opposite side then they will probably reject the photo, but most if the time the mirroring or distortion is hard to spot so it will probably get accepted anyway.

Try to avoid selfies if you can! Get someone else to take the photo. Selfies can distort the photo and also tend to mirror it. It messes with facial recognition.

It might not be too big of a deal if you're not using it for travel but the electronic gates at customs will have trouble because they use facial recognition to let you through.

Or maybe the advice is to use selfie mode if you aren't using it for travel since it will impact on the ability for the government to surveil you?

Yeah if you’re using library books, some of the e-platforms (but not all) insist that Adobe Digital Editions has to be present on your machine to let you download it in the first place.

When I download from Libby, I end up with a weird ACSM file that I presume is nicely handled on Windows but on Linux it's like getting a text file with XML inside that just has a link to some adobe website. Luckily I can feed it into the tool and it will fetch it for me.

A blue screen of death takes me all afternoon to make a linux thumbdrive and boot in and fix everything very laboriously through trial and error and reading forums when it would probably take you 15 minutes tops

I also have a "fix everything very laboriously through trial and error" approach to problem solving. It does work, though 😅

I suspect the newer passport application processes make applying without a verified RealMe easier, so having to go to a post shop to verify your RealMe account was probably not helpful anymore. I know DIA got big money to improve the passport application processes.

Renewing your passport shouldn't be a drama. If you've ever had one (even if expired now) then you can do the renewal process and they just use facial recognition to compare against your previous passports to confirm it's you.

Now I think about it, I think the issue is that I cannot even obtain the DRMed eBook because I use Linux and so can't install whatever adobe software is needed. Not sure if calibre needs you to get the proper book file or not.

The server stuff is fun when it works 😅. Docker makes it low risk to just spin up a new service that looks cool, try it out, and delete it if it wasn't what you were looking for. I started on a raspberry pi, then moved to using an old laptop, and now use an old gaming PC for my personal self-hosting (mostly for the photo services, which can be resource heavy).

I think I saw something about DIA no longer allowing it for passport renewal.

I think that's unlikely since they are the ones pushing for its use. Perhaps it was that a verified RealMe is no longer required? Their renew passport page says you can create a RealMe during the process, which implies a verified RealMe is not required. I can't remember if it was previously required.

The distinction between RealMe as a login service and RealMe as an identity verification service is one thing I think they convey poorly. They should consider splitting these products into two separate but connected brands.

Been ages since I had to renew so I’m probably forgetting the poor customer experience part and am about to find out.

Exciting! If you already have a RealMe then the process is mostly ok. The RealMe onboarding is atrocious and the distinction between the login and verification is endlessly confusing to users (you should not need to go to a post shop to verify your identity).

DIA has done heaps to improve the passport process in recent years so hopefully it goes smoothly for you! Looking online they seem to actually be issuing passports within normal times, too! After COVID they got so many applications all at once they were taking months to issue passports.

Oh boy, you asked so here it comes. A summary:

  • Borrow book on Libby
  • Download adobe DRM formated book
  • Use libgourou to remove DRM and create epub
  • Import into Calibre then immediately export - just do this step for the consistent naming structure
  • Copy to server
  • Run Kavita on server for managing and reading the books

It seems there's a de-DRM plugin for Calibre but I wasn't aware of this. So I could simplify this process a bit but it works so I will probably just keep doing it 🤷

I went technology - > programming - > general and got suggested a Brazilian instance in Portuguese. Maybe needs a language question 😅

I think it's pretty normal for the wait time to be longest for the first book. Some number of people read the first one, then a smaller number are interested in the second, and an even smaller number are interested in the third. Almost no one reads the second book before the first so it's always front loaded like that.

Luckily I can strip the DRM and read it in my own time 🙂.

I had one just moments before posting that comment, and I've noticed significantly more of them since you mentioned it a week or two back. Not sure if it's update related or not.

Welcome to this week’s casual kōrero thread!

This post will be pinned in this community so you can always find it, and will stay for about a week until replaced by the next one.

It’s for talking about anything that might not justify a full post. For example:

  • Something interesting that happened to you
  • Something humourous that happened to you
  • Something frustrating that happened to you
  • A quick question
  • A request for recommendations
  • Pictures of your pet
  • A picture of a cloud that kind of looks like an elephant
  • Anything else, there are no rules (except the rule)

So how’s it going?

International media and scientific organisations are lapping up footage of a real life 'Sharktopus' filmed in the Hauraki Gulf.

Marine biologist Professor Rochelle Constantine said the encounter in December 2023 was a tale to top them all.

A Dunedin local who has been giving free skateboarding lessons to the city's new migrants is hoping to encourage even more people into the sport by opening up to the wider community.

"We started teaching new migrants - a friend of ours who is part of our group now had a contact in the Red Cross and said it would be great to see if any of them were interested in learning how to skate. And sure enough, a couple came along for a lesson, and then next week more came along, and it started growing that way."

He said they had given lessons to dozens of people, with the Saturday morning lessons selling out for every session so far.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions for cabbage recipes from the other week. Some great stuff, but now I'm sick of cabbage.

Does anyone have some great recipes that taste good and are loaded with vegetables?

Preferably ones where cabbage isn't the main ingredient.

New Zealand's game development industry is growing more than 10 times faster than the global average, and on track to reach $1 billion annual export revenue in the next few years, an industry report says.

NZ Game Developers Association (NZGDA) inaugural report indicates the game development sector grew 26 percent on the year earlier, which exceeded the global forecast of 2.1 percent growth.

Meta has won an emergency ruling in the US to temporarily stop a former director of Facebook, New Zealander Sarah Wynn Williams, from promoting or further distributing copies of her book.

Her publisher, Pan Macmillan, said in a statement the book was first person narrative account of what the author herself witnessed during her seven years at the company.

Meta supplied a statement to RNZ, in which it called the book "a mix of out-of-date and previously reported claims about the company and false accusations about our executives".

It said Wynn-Williams ceased working at the company eight years ago, and an investigation at the time found she had made "misleading and unfounded allegations of harassment".

The Commerce Commission has filed criminal charges against meal delivery company HelloFresh New Zealand for alleged misleading behaviour.

The regulator claims the company misled customers in cold calls trying to get discontinued subscribers to sign up again.

The claim related to conduct between February 2022 and July 2023, when previous HelloFresh customers were offered vouchers without being told that accepting them would reactivate their subscription, the Commission said.

Lemmyvision is starting for the year. Here's one such post about it: https://lemmy.nz/post/19892616

We have until the end of the month to decide on a song to enter. Some rules in the link about, but basically:

  • We pick just one song
  • Regional languages (e.g. Māori) encouraged
  • Song must have been released after 1 Jan 2024
  • Must not be an international hit, the idea is to showcase music that people in other countries might not know

Last year we got 5th!

Should we enter again? Any ideas for what song to submit?

Reply with your suggestions and once we have a few suggestions I'll organise a poll.
