Monitors and TVs always have the catchiest names. Those marketing people are just geniuses.
First billion years free. After that it’s 17.99 per millennia.
These kinds of contradicitons exist in man made structures, such as laws, rules and regulations. In situations like that, a judge has to pick which rule to follow and which one to ignore. The first time that happens, it becomes the standard solution (precedent) for those kinds of problems.
Maybe the universe will crash due to division by zero, floating-point error, integer overflow and segmentation fault, all of them occurring simultaneously. The objects will experience infinite velocity and infinite forces, there will be rounding errors, the system will run out of RAM and storage space. The universal CPU will max out all threads, and run out of cooling capacity. The hardware catches fire, the entire universe immediately collapses into a singularity, resulting in a new big bang as the system reboots. Oh, and the log files are corrupted, so good luck troubleshooting that one.
I’ve made porridge in the morning, pizza in the afternoon, and also washed some laundry after that. According to a very rough estimate, all of that totals to about 5.5 MJ of energy. In reality, I’ve used a little more than that by using other appliances too, but I think that value is in the correct ballpark.
Today I didn’t drive anywhere, so the chemical energy contained in gasoline wasn’t included. Also, haven’t taken a shower yet (it’s cold in here). Heating the water and the rest of the building uses district heating, but I have no idea how much energy that is per day.
Well, what if we used renewable energy to run a DAC process? That would require lots of solar and wind power, but we’re going to need a lot of that anyway to get permanently rid of fossil fuels.
As you pointed out, the low concentratiions are a serious issue for any process, but maybe plants will do a better job our current machines can. Either way, once you have that carbon, we would really need put it back where it came from. The way I see it, slowing down global warming is a step in the right direction and becoming carbon neutral is another step. However, what we really need is a complete ban on all fossil fuels and an efficient way to reduce the CO2 concentration of the atmosphere.
Also, I have fairly negative view on CCU, since it doesn’t really solve the problem. CCS on the other hand seems like a better option. If you do it with plants and store the carbon as biochar, I’m all for it. If you want to do it with electricity and chemistry, I’m ok with that too, as long as it gets the job done.
I hope that one day drilling oil has been banned, and CCS becomes mandatory. If you want hydrocarbons in order to manufacture chemicals and plastics, you can pull them from the air. There’s enough for everyone.
I would love to believe in wholesome ducks, but I’ve read some truly awful things about them, specifically mallards. My imagination has been permanently contaminated by birds committing heinous atrocities to each other.
You need to trick your subconscious mind into believing the things are new. Maybe ask a friend to put used things in a box and drop it off in front of your door.
It definitely would be a good idea to put some SIBs in every place that produces intermittent energy.
Also, energy intensive places might want to get batteries too. Let’s say you have an aluminiun factory, which obviously needs lots of energy 24/7. How about you use cheap (or even free) solar power when there’s oversupply to charge the batteries, and discharge them during the night.
Sounded more like a prototype to me. How would you even keep those cells alive for weeks or years?
Only when the following conditions apply.
I’ve screwed up my sleep cycle. (At least once a week. You know, because digital entertainment exists…)
I’ve had to wake up early. (very often)
I feel tired in the afternoon. (a bit rare)
There’s nothing urgent going on in the afternoon. (often)
On average, I tend to take a 1-2 naps every week. If I did that every day, it would be a sign of something gone horribly wrong with my life.
