Yeah going public is often the death knell of real progressive action from companies.

I think we are mostly on the same page. I would say "owning the company" isn't the same as "in control of how the company works" when you're owned by a giant parent company. They may still "own" it but they haven't effectively been in direct control of its current and future operations since 2000.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_%26_Jerry%27s#Unilever_era

In April 2000, Ben & Jerry's sold itself to British multinational food giant Unilever for $326 million

In 2010, Jostein Solheim, a Unilever executive from Norway, was appointed CEO.

In 2018, Matthew McCarthy, previously a Unilever executive, was appointed CEO, replacing Solheim.

You're missing the point here. It hasn't been in control of the original people who ran the company for a long, long time. It's literally been being run by Unilever executives.

Side note, Milton Friedman wasn't just an evil fuck, he was also in many ways kind of dumb as shit.

His "four ways of spending money" is a prime example.

He claims the fourth way (spending somebody else's money on somebody else) is how the government works, and thus it's wasteful, but what he fails to fucking account for is with how large most corporations are that the fourth way of spending money is effectively how corporations work, too. Some bean counter in accounting and some finance guys and a variety of middle managers are all spending somebody else's money (the company's money) on someone else (the whims of the CEO and the board).

He holds this example up as showing how government spending is always bad and inefficient and how corporate spending isn't, but he's a dumbfuck, they're actually the same.

To be fair, Unilever has owned Ben & Jerry's since April 2000.

Unless you were pressuring them about that issue before April 2000, you were actually dealing with Unilever.

Which is literally my point.

Ah the old terminator seeds.

In a similar vein:

https://www.reuters.com/article/world/pepsico-sues-four-indian-farmers-for-using-its-patented-lays-potatoes-idUSKCN1S21E8/

There's at least a chance that PepsiCo's patented potatoes had gotten into the worldwide supply on accident and it really was no fault of these farmers for growing patented food.

Also similarly, varieties of apples are also patented.

True, both options under capitalism are pretty bad.

The one sole benefit to the disabled is being able to work for Goodwill for a few hours a week will be unlikely to go over their income limits so their SSI and so they can stay on SSI and still work at least a little to supplement their obscenely meager disability income. SSDI recipients fare far better and are literally allowed to have income as long as it isn't worked. Meaning a rich SSDI recipient can stop working but still make a boatload of money off of investment income.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1142333/

The US chemical giant DuPont learned its lesson of Bhopal in a different way. The company attempted for a decade to export a nylon plant from Richmond, VA to Goa, India. In its early negotiations with the Indian government, DuPont had sought and won a remarkable clause in its investment agreement that absolved it from all liabilities in case of an accident.

The Bhopal disaster was Union Carbide and then Dow Chemicals baby, but as this paper points out, companies like DuPont learned some particularly evil things from it.

Ben & Jerry's was traditionally a "good" company for example, but what killed that was them getting bought out by an evil company, Unilever. This path is the path a lot of "good" companies take when they go bad.

Just to be clear, Goodwill is notorious for this, but any company can do this. The law allows the disabled to be paid less because they cannot complete the same job as fast. Essentially saying that getting the job done faster means you deserve to live more. It's insanity that takes advantage of the weakest and most desperate in society under the guise of helping them. Because they cannot get as much work done to their mental or physical disabilities they deserve to be underpaid even though they worked a 40 hour week? It's a fucking joke and a slap in the face to anyone disabled, but it's the law. Once again, tons of companies abuse this, Goodwill is just well known for abusing it more than others.

I keep seeing the idea of the Democrats forcing a government shutdown over the debt ceiling as one of the few ways to fight what is going on.

It just keeps going through my mind that Trump/Musk aren't following any rules or laws as it is, they're breaking every valid security rule there is as it is.

So, what would a shutdown do other than give them carte blanche to fuck shit up while all the federal workers have to go home without pay?

Musk has the wealth to just keep paying the people he wants to keep fucking shit up out of his own pockets. If all the federal workers are sent home, who is even going to do the dance of trying to stand in their way?

Isn't that more dangerous?

I feel like maybe there's more that I'm not understanding about the situation, but at the same time it feels like all bets are off and Musk is going to do whatever the fuck he wants no matter what is happening.

EDIT: FULL ENGLISH DUB ON YOUTUBE!

Whatever you do, find the English Dub.

Do not get the subtitled version. I know this is the opposite of what you usually want for a foreign film, but trust me on this one.

The English Dub for this film is absolutely unhinged and great.

I've been trying to find a list of the English voice actors for a very long time because I swear I recognize several voices from my Saturday morning cartoons in the 90's. (Most notably one of the young Shaolin boys that Hung Man Ting befriends)

IMDB Entry

Starring:

  • Jet Li as Hung Hei Kwun
  • Miao Xie as Hung Man Ting
  • Chingmy Yau as Red Bean
  • Deannie Ip as Red Bean's Mother
  • Sung-Young Chen as Ma Kai-Sin
  • Chunhua Ji as Ma Ling-Yee
  • Damian Lau as Chan Kan-Nam
  • Lung-Wei Wang as Commander
  • Chu-Ko Liang as the Wax Sculptor

Ten years before Kung Fu Hustle, Jet Li starred in this comedic action film which sports a lot of elements of what you might call a "Live Action Anime."

As shown in the animated GIF above, the film starts off on full-blast with a Shaolin plus a baby fight. (and of course catbox.moe is down so the GIF isn't loading now, d'oh!)

This would be the first of two films Jet Li would star alongside Miao Xie as a father/son fighting duo, followed by My Father is a Hero / The Enforcer (1995). The Enforcer is a much more serious film than New Legend of Shaolin, and in my opinion New Legend of Shaolin is just a way more fun film.

The entire film really feels cartoony and over-the-top. Every step of the way it gets weirder until it results in an absolutely insane climax and ending.

I keep on making shit up in my head
I'm freaking out all the time
I get so sad then get so depressed
You don't know what it's like

I keep on making shit up in my head
I over-analyze my life
I get so sad then treat myself like shit
You don't know what it's like, you don't know what it's like
To be me

I keep on making shit up on the regs
I keep on making up these stories in my head
And I keep thinking that I don't have a single friend
And even though I'm always hanging out with all of them
So are you ever gonna call me now?
You only love me whеn you want me around
And then you treat mе like shit, here we go again
You don't know what it's like

I keep on making shit up in my head
I'm freaking out all the time
I get so sad then get so depressed
You don't know what it's like, you don't know what it's like

I keep on making shit up in my head
I over-analyze my life
I flip a switch and become a bitch
You don't know what it's like, you don't know what it's like
To be me

I keep on making shit up in my head
I keep on lying to myself and all my friends
And holding onto all of these stupid little resentments
And even if I have to call you out again
So are you ever gonna come around?
You only love me when you want me around
And then we pretend that life's all good again
You don't know what it's like, you don't know what it's like

I keep on making shit up in my head
I'm freaking out all the time
I get so sad then get so depressed
You don't know what it's like, you don't know what it's like

I keep on making shit up in my head
I over-analyze my life
I get so sad and then I fucking flip
You don't know what it's like, you don't know what it's like
To be me

I don’t want to do this

I don’t want to be here

I don’t want to meet 'em

I don’t want to listen

I don’t want to do this

I built a little empire out of some crazy garbage

Called the blood of the exploited working class

But they've overcome their shyness

Now they're calling me Your Highness

And a world screams, "Kiss me, Son of God"

I destroyed a bond of friendship and respect

Between the only people left who'd even look me in the eye

Now I laugh and make a fortune

Off the same ones that I tortured

And a world screams, "Kiss me, Son of God"

I look like Jesus, so they say

But Mr. Jesus is very far away

Now you're the only one here who can tell me if it's true

That you love me and I love me

I built a little empire out of some crazy garbage

Called the blood of the exploited working class

But they've overcome their shyness

Now they're calling me Your Highness

And a world screams, "Kiss me, Son of God"

Yes a world screams, "Kiss me, Son of God"

Hackers leaked thousands of files from Lexipol, a Texas-based company that develops policy manuals, training bulletins, and consulting services for first responders.

The manuals, which are crafted by Lexipol’s team of public sector attorneys, practitioners, and subject-matter experts, are customized to align with the specific needs and local legal requirements of agencies across the country.

But the firm also faces criticism for its blanket approach to police policies and pushback on reforms.

The data, a sample of which was given to the Daily Dot by a group referring to itself as “the puppygirl hacker polycule,” includes approximately 8,543 files related to training, procedural, and policy manuals, as well as customer records that contain names, usernames, agency names, hashed passwords, physical addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers.

Lexipol, also known as PoliceOne, is a private company based in Frisco, Texas that provides policy manuals, training bulletins, and consulting services to approximately 8,500 law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and other public safety departments across the United States. This leak contains the policy manuals produced by Lexipol, and some subscriber information.

Founded by two former cops that became lawyers, Lexipol retains copyright over all manuals which it creates despite the public nature of its work. There is little transparency on how decisions are made to draft their policies, which have an oversized influence on policing in the United States. The company localizes their materials to address differences in legal frameworks, depending on the city or state where the client is based.

Lexipol's manuals become public policy in thousands of jurisdictions. Lexipol's policies have been challenged in court for their role in racial profiling, harassment of immigrants, and unlawful detention. For example, Lexipol policies were used to justify body cameras being turned off when a police officer shot and killed Eric Logan in South Bend, Indiana in June 2019.

I've been suggested Carvana, and I may end up going that way if it is indeed the simplest route.

I'm driving an older car, it's in many ways in very good condition, but the head gasket is starting to go. It hasn't gotten bad yet (no coolant in the oil... yet) and could be fixed, but the cost to fix is about three times the value of the vehicle. It's got relatively low mileage for it's age and I've barely driven it anywhere during the time that I've owned it.

I don't expect to get much for it, maybe a $400-$700 bucks, but I really don't know the best way to go around it.

Like 15 years ago I would have just listed it with pertinent info on condition and photos on Craigslist. I'm not so sure Craigslist is so viable now.

Thanks for any help you can give me, Lemmy!

I began to consider this as my mouth filled with the flavor of pineapple as I remembered the flavor of a pineapple.

Do other senses suffer from the same issue?
