Your opinion on censorship / moderation is so full of contradictions and misconceptions it's quite fascinating.

Honestly Lemmy is way too small to be monitored and acted upon.

So even though the question is interesting I think deleting Lemmy because of the current administration is an over reaction.

On the contrary you probably have the opportunity to freely dissent here when others on mainstream socials networks can't.

But I'm European so it's easy for me to say that this is probably safe here. You have to evaluate the risk yourself but I think no administration gives a single sh** about Lemmy.

I bought OW at release and it's one of the best value I ever got in gaming.

The game was around 40€ many years ago and I had all heroes since release, plenty of lootboxes and skins. And I played hundreds of hours on it. Yes they killed their game in the recent years but that doesn't mean I didn't get any value from it. I honestly think they were pretty generous for the first years considering it wasn't price at 60€ like some CoD.

I get it but I don't really mind when it's a very old game. It's not like your copy of R6 siege has that much value many years after release.

Same goes for OW.

That's not fair to change the system only when businesses require it. I received a fuckin' letter from a government entity where I live for having downloaded the trash tier movie "Demolition".

I agree copyright and patents are bad but it's so infuriating that only the rich and powerful can choose not to respect it.

So I think openAI has to pay because as of now that shitty copyright and patent system is still there and has hurt many individuals around the world.

We should try to change the laws for copyright but after the big businesses pay their due.

They are not releasing anything of value in open source recently.

Sam altman said they were on the wrong side of history about this when deepseek released.

They are not open anymore I want that to be clear. They decided to stop releasing open source because 💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵.

So yeah I can have huge fines for downloading copyrighted material where I live, and they get to make money out of that same material without even releasing anything open source? Fuck no.

I would argue it's a security issue not to have any ad blocking. Many scams online start with popups or fake ads.

So if you get the opportunity to talk to IT that's what I would mention.

I think that since you care about cleanliness of your environment you have trouble wrapping your head around some people not caring at all about that.

Some people don't even notice garbage on the ground. I have seen a soon to be engineer throwing their trash out of the window like a century ago. He didn't even notice the trash in the street below even though he was walking through it everyday.

It's not about morality it's about not giving a fuck to something so hard you don't even notice it.

Also some people have a life so hard it's just not possible for them to care about it. When it comes to survival I don't blame people for not being able to care. If your concern is your next meal throwing your trash properly seems irrelevant.

Well yes, if you can afford to boycott airbnb clearly you could do so.

And AirBnB is all around the world so I'm sure there is plenty of illegal things to rent on Airbnb. They just look the other way.

Not OP but I wanted to thank you for the quality of your comment. It's insightful, seems comprehensive and pragmatic.

We are lucky to have knowledgeable lemmynautes sharing what looks like very good advice on this topic.

I'm also considering taking a second indoor cat so I'm grateful I could read a detailed and well thought out post on this.

I personally have a female cat but I feel a bit bad she could feel lonely or "bored" during my absence when I'm at work. I'm probably projecting human feeling on my cat but I still think she would appreciate a cat friend to play with when I can't do so. Also my cat has always been very scared of humans (except me that she completely feels safe with). Which means that essentially she will hide for hours if any other human being visits me. My probably naive idea was that she would gain trust when she sees another cat much less afraid of humans and accept the fact that most humans are not a threat. Obviously this is not the main reason that motivates me to get another cat. But it will certainly be more comfortable for my cat to feel less threaten by any human visiting my place. And as a bonus I would also get another furry friend :)

I will continue to ponder that decision for a few months anyway but I'm really appreciative of your comment and the great insights on a complicated question.

I keep up with US news for years by now and I'm some French dude who shouldn't care about it. The US is a preview of the next issues my country will encounter so I think it matters to follow some American news.

I think it doesn't matter really why American elected Trump twice. It just raises the question on what can we do to change that. And there is nothing else really to do that trying to reach out and convince the other side.

My main philosophical question out of this is what can you do if your country decides unequivocally and democratically to be racist or Xenophobic or commiting war crimes?

It also doesn't really matter as to why a large group of human beings can agree to be racist but I think it definitely says something about humanity. In some way it makes climate change more "acceptable" in my mind. Maybe we do deserve to go extinct if after all this progress and intellectual collaboration all we get is deciding to become racist or discriminatory, to morally fail, to prey on the weak and powerless.

That's how bad the US looks for me right now. It's depressing in general about us humans and not just America. It's a testament to our ability to be evil and to collaborate to be evil or mean to others.

We usually get one or two people saying to look for the helpers in time of crisis. There is no helper for this crisis. Good luck living in a dictatorship I guess.
