Climbing a cliff, he discovers a baby owl in a cave: several climbing routes closed in Savoie

While climbing a cliff in Savoie, a climber had an unexpected encounter. He was leaning against a hold containing a nest occupied by a tawny owl chick, a protected species. The climber immediately alerted the Bauges Nature Park and climbing routes were closed to protect the nestling.

A climber out on a crag in the Bauges massif had an unexpected encounter on the side of a cliff. While climbing a route at the Garins site in the Bauges massif, Alexandre Renoir accidentally put his hand in a hold containing a tawny owl nest on 19 June.

Inside the cavity was a chick of this protected species: "The cliff in question is split into two parts. I discovered the nestling while climbing a route that had just been re-equipped but hadn't been climbed for years. I had already climbed this route last winter but there was no owl. Here, a nestling occupied a hole 40 centimetres in diameter and 60 centimetres deep", explains Alexandre Renoir.

"The hole is clearly visible from the bottom of the wall. It's a hold that you have to use to get through a passage. I put my hand in the hole and it was a real surprise. The chick was at the bottom of the hole," he continues. I immediately climbed back down and left the route.

Once on the ground, the climber, who is also president of the Bauju climbing club, contacted the Savoie Territorial Committee and the Bauges Regional Nature Park. Four routes were then closed on the Garins site, considered to be the most important climbing site in the massif, with some 110 routes.

A protective device

The aim of the measure is to allow the young owls to develop properly before they fly away. "It happens occasionally that owls nest on cliffs, but it's still quite rare", explains Adrien Lambert, coordinator for the Ligue de protection des oiseaux (LPO) in Savoie.

"It's a protected species that's quite shy by nature. What's more, the parents go back and forth every day, not only to defend the nest, but also to feed the chick with micro-mammals, such as mice or field mice. They can be quite aggressive when approaching their nest", he points out.

Two other eggs were found in the cavity. But these are not expected to hatch. As a result, only the nestling is being closely monitored. In addition to closing the lanes, a photo trap has been installed to monitor the progress of the brood, and awareness-raising signs have been put up nearby.

"The climber's behaviour is to be commended. It illustrates the good cohesion between an outdoor sport and the proper development of biodiversity. It shows that it is possible to reconcile sporting activities with the preservation of wildlife," says Adrien Lambert.

Something a little off topic (and I guess a lot of people know this already) - during the summer we are putting out dishes with water. Either they are shallow enough that birds and other animals don't accidentally drown or with deeper pots we put in stones in the middle that will stay above the water line. And for insects (that also need water) we offer a flat wood which helps them to climb out. Survival or potential snack for animals.

Might be due to language / education differences but I don't think I've ever seen these names come up in math problems.

Self awareness? They all go to a convention meeting, which usually is a place for people who share a common interest to talk and learn. And here everone is standing around but without the slightest indication that any kind of actual exchange/dialogue takes place. Which defies the idea of a convention, but they at least know they're part of the problem.

No worries. I just don't like Facebook/Meta and their Business model. But a lot of animal rescues and other groups organise things on FB and share info. So there's a good side.

I just meant that if someone else likes it and wants to enter they can use it.

But thank you for being our data protection officer. (I can't share pics at the moment as the instance hosting my account is having technical problems insert person taking the knives for peacefully sleeping person meme)

Good news for people who need to use the Deutsche Bahn. It won't help much concerning the general problems of reliability/punctuality unfortunately.

Today, noyb has filed a complaint and report against the German credit agency SCHUFA with the Hessian data protection authority. The company appears to be making millions of euros by selling people in Germany their own data. With the help of manipulative designs, people are prevented from obtaining a free copy of their data in accordance with Article 15 GDPR – even though they would actually be legally entitled to it. The company’s primary aim appears to be to profit from people looking for accommodation. In Germany, they often have to provide proof of solvency in order to obtain a lease.

The part that might be interesting for people:

Concealed rights. On its own website, SCHUFA only advertises its so-called “BonitätsAuskunft” for €29.95 to private individuals and claims that it offers an “advantage on the housing market”. A transparent reference to the Article 15 GDPR right to free information is not provided. Using manipulative designs, the company is trying to push the sale of paid products and even falsely presents the free information as unsuitable for submission to third parties.

Martin Baumann, data protection lawyer at noyb: “SCHUFA is falsely claiming that only its paid products can be presented to third parties. In reality, the European Court of Justice has emphasised several times that data subjects are allowed to do whatever they want with their free information."

Guten Morgen liebe Lemminge!

Frohes 2024!

The German government has presented its new citizenship law this Wednesday (23.08.2023). The legislation proposed by Interior Minister Nancy Faeser will make dual citizenship easier as well as naturalization for non-EU citizens.<

The new citizenship plans boil down to these changes:

  • Immigrants legally living in Germany will be allowed to apply for citizenship after five years, rather than the current eight; and if they have special achievements this can go down to only three years

  • Children born in Germany of at least one parent who has been living legally in the country for five or more years will automatically get German citizenship;

  • Immigrants above the age of 67 will be able to do an oral instead of a written German language test

  • Multiple citizenships will be allowed

People living entirely on state support will not be eligible for German citizenship. German citizenship will be denied to people who have committed antisemitic, racist, xenophobic or other defamatory offenses that are seen to be "unreconcilable with commitment to the free democratic basic order."

The new legislation will be debated in parliament and could come into effect in the fall.<

Au pair contracts cap work at 30 hours per week, and allow for one-and-a-half days off. Au pairs are to receive €280 ($304) in expenses each month and an additional €70 to put toward German language courses.

These rules are often ignored, au pair advocates say — a thorn in the side of aboveboard au pair agencies.

"Our agencies always insist that the focus of working hours is on child care and that chores be done along with the family," Cordula Walter-Bolhöfer, who works at Gütegemeinschaft Au Pair, an umbrella organization representing 30 of Germany's 100 au pair agencies.

"Au pairs are not supposed to be cheap household helpers," she added.

Lack of oversight

One source of exploitation is the lack of licensing. Since 2002, au pair agencies have only needed a business license to operate, with no additional certification. Other would-be au pairs get connected to host families over social media or so-called "matching" platforms where there is little control.

"When they see photos of nice families with nice children on Facebook, for example, many believe that this is the truth," said Walter-Bolhöfer.

When problems arise in these cases, au pairs have no contact person. That's when someone like Susanne Flegel steps in. She has been running an agency for more than 17 years and helps au pairs in trouble.

"There was a time when we had several calls a day. Politicians claim that these are isolated cases. But they are not isolated cases," she told DW. "When we ask various au pairs, they say exploitation is common."<

I'm not really surprised about the lack of regulation. The au pairs aren't voters and don't have a lobby behind them. On the other hand there's people who don't mind exploiting others. And there's need for help and cheap labour.
