Yeah, I feel the same. Revolt Chat is just an eventual Discord 2 if it gains traction. It doesn't really matter how open-source it is. It is centralized, and so will eventually need funding for hosting. Without the ability to run my own server and everyone be able to connect to it in their clients, it's not a valid alternative.

Any other alternatives I'm unaware of to look into? Or are we just SOL?

I think Discord bridging requires encryption to be off, unfortunately, and I personally see bridging as the only way for Matrix to overcome the network effects of Discord.

Oh wow, that's before my time. Thanks for sharing its existence with me.

Alternatives that move us backwards towards the old days are things like TeamSpeak/Mumble/Ventrilo.

Alternatives that are similar to Discord and not owned by a for-profit company are:

  • Matrix

A huge missing piece of almost all not-for-profit alternatives is a lack of low-latency game streaming / screen streaming. The best Matrix gets is running a jitsi meet. I think Matrix is the only one that theoretically could work for some users because Discord bridges allow people who are finally fed up to move to Matrix for text chat.

It's difficult, though.

I agree, but having looked down this road, finding a quality external player that users will understand and is inexpensive is ... not easy.

Alright, so I have had Jellyfin installed for years now, but my primary issue is that most devices myself or my users use lack official, readily-available clients. For example, the Samsung TV app is a developer mode install. Last I looked, nobody has put a build into the store.

I really want to use Jellyfin, but I feel like my users simply can't. I'm interested in others' experiences here that could help.

My experience is that both Plex and Jellyfin pointed at the same media files causes no issues.

Fuck the cybertruck but I agree. To me, it looks like a firm layer of ice and a distinct lack of tires which can handle ice or chains failing that. Cybertruck's weight is doing it no favors here either, and the load helped pull him down the hill. Chains would have made a huge difference in this condition.

If you expected Analogue to have a reasonable amount of product (ready for release or otherwise), you have not been paying attention.

Yep, developers will optimize their game for their wants and needs. It’s not the engine’s fault, it’s the developers’ for using techniques that don’t perform well on current technology. Unreal 5 could run well on launch on then-current technology.

Finally got my lemmy instance fully updated.

Been improving my backup scripts in advance of adding backup to a server.

Updated servers and other services.

  • Adds the following items to the System tab of the Main Menu:
    • Motion Blur Strength

Allows the player to adjust the strength of the motion blur effect when the character or camera is in motion. The default setting is the maximum of 5. This can be lowered to reduce the strength of the motion blur effect, or set to 0 to turn it off completely.

    • Player Follow (Movement)

    • Player Follow (Attack)

Turning these settings off prevents the camera from automatically following the player while moving and attacking respectively.

  • Changes the maximum setting of the Camera Sensitivity (Horizontal) and Camera Sensitivity (Vertical) items from 10 to 20.
  • Adds three new controller layouts: types D, E, and F.
  • Corrects an issue that affected the stability of some menus.
  • Corrects some text issues.
  • Adds the hashtag #FF16 when sharing screenshots or video clips on Twitter or YouTube.

In a video by @[email protected], Alec goes into a deep dive into the simplicity of his particular model, its shortcomings and variety of data logging tests in an attempt to fix them.

TL,DW: Very simple, cheap and ingenious design, with one compressor loop between the fridge and freezer in series. However, its temperature sensor is wonky and so the fridge is more affected by how long the compressor operates than the actual temperature itself. There is a signficant temperature differential between the top and bottom, fans on the exterior or interior could help but with the faulty sensor only made matters worse. With the controller replaced with a proper temp control unit the fridge functioned much better.
