Consider this:
When the cooking oil is heated, the distillate contamination will flash off, leaving a nice clean cooking oil.
If distillate is slightly contaminated with with cooking oil, probably not so bad that engines burning it can't deal with the slightly differing heat rate and specific gravity of the new mixture.

Will there ever be a bevel gear drive shaft on a mass production bicycle? The shaft and supporting structure has to be really ridigd to keep the gears meshing properly. That means more weight and more expensive. Also, expensive replacement parts.
I think you might be using the IR gun incorrectly.
The area which is being measured may be partially off the edge of the bed.
