The PFAS/PFOA controversy, is mostly about banning these commodity products so that the proprietary, non-commodity alternatives by western companies can become the only high temperature dry lubricant on sale.

Maybe in another 60 years we'll have the same controversy about them !

Plastic is an organic material, trees are mostly plastic (lignin, a phenolic polymer, cellulose a polysaccharide polymer, hemicellulose an heteropolysaccharide and suberin a polyester-like polymer).

The problem we're having is a naturalistic fallacy crossed with the unpleasant fact that almost everything we touch sheds dust and powder absolutely everywhere. This along with spores and yeast and other dusts constantly enter our bodies.

Plastic is only of note because we made it.

Any problems beyond that is speculative and will requires ginormous gobs of grant money to actually answer with anything than precautionary principle-based FUD.

Except plastic doesn't really seem to do anything. It just "is there". Unless you swallow enough of it to clog something, it doesn't seem to do anything.

We've seens lots of "it might interefere with hormones", but that part is always to be confirmed in the next research grant request and then we never hear about it again.

Thanks that looks like the most attainable way for now. But I would like to have more data in there, such as season temperature trend, 10th and 90th percentile historical values and min/max temperature records, to give context to the data. Also have precipitation. Be able to zoom in and out of the data to get more find grain minute-by-minute, or see the last 5 years at once, and be able to move the "X" position in time, so that I could watch the data, at the minute level, but from 4 years ago. Also I would hope to see the 7 day temperature prediction line

This looks good, although I'm not a fan that it says "non-commercial use" To me that means, we reserve the right to alter the deal. Also it seems to get it's data from a private company, rather than my local government weather office and their public API, whatever it might be ?

Also, this says it is an API. So would I need to code up an entire web front end to display the data like I would like .. ?

I presume, there is some application which can display data of this API ? Are any, like the style I am after ?

I see that it has the historical data so that's great, maybe I could have the min/maximum recorded temperatures as part of my single temperature view thing, at least, it could do it !

I see there is a 10000 API request limit, so I don't know if that's going to work at all. If I just scroll back in time, I imagine it would bust this 10000 request cap very quickly ?

But that does sound like the most promising meteo self-hosted option.

It's kind of weird we've got maps, mail, notes but not weather ?

There are so many people making their own weather stations but it seems here there has not really been someone self-hosting their own weather dashboard !

Maybe it's a new frontier of selfhosting !

Yes, by default they will all have to be. So if you want any internet, you will have to allow strangers to communicate to you. You will have to be not a savage about it. But you will also have to be able to block outright abuse. So IDS, IPban, dns blocking, anti fish proxy, client side certificate and "drop all" as the default firewall policy. And compared to nat4, you'll be opening ports rather than forwarding them.

All this except ids is already standard issue in openwrt.

Yes grafana does seem like a good framework for building such a thing. But has anyone done it ? It is quite a lot to learn so I'm curious to see if someone has made one of these self-hosted meteo application already.

I am setting up a lemmy instance for a small private group. They are not very technically literate and I don't want to have to explain the concept of joining the right communities as part of the onboarding process.

So I want to pre-load all the right default communities to each user when they create an account. Is there a way to accomplish this ?

Hi,

Just booted up lemmy-ui instance for the first time

It asks for "Set Up Site Administrator"

But as you can see when I press signup, nothing really happens

If I try to login with that account it says "Toastify is awesome!"

When I check the logs I get

BTW this is on gigabit internet

It is quite annoyting, it prevents some other addons like close duplicates from running at all, as it does not run as long as there is something loading

Fortunately, "Stop all" does work to shut them off

This is a new behaviour from today, possibly ?

I just gave it a try, openned 3 tabs and waited 60 seconds, they didn't finish loading.

I tried turning off ublock, no effect

NOTE :

Issue has resolved itself after a reboot. This is a system with a amd 5950x and 64gb ram.

Is it possible for an addon to tell if a tab was closed, or pulled out ? (github issue, feature request) (github.com)
 

The select-after-closing-current addon is a way to pullout a random tab out of a window, which will not change the tab that was visible in that window.

However, what it does is any closed tab, it will select the previously seen tab no matter what.

The reason for my question, I would like to know if it is possible for the add-on to have a different behaviour for closed tabs from pulled out tabs.

I wish, when I close a tab, to always select the tab to the right. But when I pullout a tab, I wish to always see the tab that was visible before the pullout.

And I'm curious if I could map my keys to make Freecad work this way. I don't know how many of the these tools don't exist in Freecad, but if I could one to one make a keybind that works for me, I might start using it instead of sketchup 8

Which addon, will open multiple tabs, from the multiple URLs in my clipboard ? (lemmy.ml)
 

There used to be an addon, "Open tabs from clipboard URLs" but I can't seem to find it anymore.

The best I find now is, an addon that opens a box, then you paste your URLs in it, then you press a button.

That's not what I want. I want a toolbar button, I press it, the tabs open.

So that I can opens large blocks of URLs.

Also, I would like another addon which opens large blocks of URLs but does not load them immediately.

I have LoadOnSelect3 for this, but the problem with that one, is that it opens special moz:// pages until you load the tab. And that breaks searching and filtering tabs because the tab title and URL are not the real ones.
