The format of these posts is simple: let’s discuss a specific game or series!

Let's discuss the Pokémon series. What is your favorite game in the series? What do you like about it? What doesn't work for you? Are there similar games you like or even prefer to the original series? Feel free to share anything that comes up and react to other comments. Let's get the conversation going!

If you have any recommendations for games or series for the next post(s), please feel free to DM me or add it in a comment here (no guarantees of course).

Previous entries: Like a Dragon / Yakuza, Assassin's Creed, UFO 50, Platformers, Uplifting Games, Final Fantasy, Visual Novels, Hollow Knight, Nintendo DS, Monster Hunter, Persona, Monkey Island, 8 Bit Era, Animal Crossing, Age of Empires, Super Mario, Deus Ex, Stardew Valley, The Sims, Half-Life, Earthbound / Mother, Mass Effect, Metroid, Journey, Resident Evil, Polybius, Tetris, Telltale Games, Kirby, LEGO Games, DOOM, Ori, Metal Gear, Slay the Spire

I played around 10 hours of UFO 50 when I got it, and even though I liked a lot of the games it kind of slipped of my radar after this.

This week I've been giving it another go and I have some THOUGHTS to share:

  • Avianos is something I immediately closed down because it felt like a bit of a headache, but now that I've been playing it I am astounded by how well it is designed. An absolute masterpiece in strategy, playing it is immensely exciting. It has so many intricacies and interacting mechanics while still being rather simple and limited in scope. Phenomenal game.

  • Magic Garden I liked the first time around, but now that I'm going for high scores I realize just how meticulously designed it is. This feels like an all time classic arcade game from the likes of Pacman and Tetris. Perfectly crafted mechanics and gameplay loop, with interesting risk-reward mechanics and tough but fair difficulty.

  • I'm finally starting to click with how the Campanella controls (because of The Big Bell Race of all games), so those games are starting to open up their magic to me too.

  • Moon Cat is a beautiful example of learning to play a game from scratch to mastery. A lot of people absolutely hate the controls, but to me it felt amazing to go from complete incompetence to muscle memory of all the moves.

COOP corner:

  • Bushido Ball is extremely fun to play in coop with a friend. Just a great and fun grind, though slightly overshadowed by...
  • Hot Foot: this is one of the best sports gaming experiences I've ever had in my life. Funnily enough, I used to play dodge ball quite seriously a few years ago, and it's absurd how much of the real experience is captured in this arcade 2v2 version of it. My only criticism is that it NEEDS a real 4 player 2v2 mode. This would result in some of the best nights ever for my friends group!
  • Seaside Drive: this felt like AAA UFO 50, just an amazing run from start to finish with great asymmetrical coop.

About half of my games are still dusted, so I think I will be dipping into this collection for the rest of my life. What an incredible achievement!

Also, I looked up that list you posted, as some of the entries seemed very strange to me, even for the time.

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/reasons-admission-insane-asylum-1800s/

In general, this document might be more accurately described as "a list of some reasons why people were believed to have eventually developed illnesses that led to their being admitted to the West Virginia Hospital for the Insane" and not a list of "symptoms" or "reasons" why people were admitted to that hospital.

It's an extremely funny list, but shows more that psychoanalysis in that time was pretty stupid, not that people were being put in an asylum for showing these behaviors.

I don't mean focus on medical situations as a wildcard to just practice any sort of (pseudo) medicine on people. It's about rights being given, not taken away.

The reason I mentioned this, is that the erasure of gender from official status might have as a side effect that rights related to gender (for example pregnancy leave) have to be defined in a way that doesn't link it to gender. By no means do I want some sort of medical laws or such that force things upon people, it's more about rights linked to a person's medical conditions.

In that sense, I see having a penis, or a uterus, or something else as just one of the medical characteristics of a person, just as for example their blood sugar, eyesight or mental state. Rights and care should be based on that, and not on a F/M on an official document.

I would prefer it if gender was just left out of official documents and policies, and rules would just focus on medical situations. This would leave space for everyone to be who they are while still allowing for specific care for people who menstruate, get pregnant, have a prostate etc.

We don't have separate rules or bathrooms for people who wear glasses or are redheads, but somehow this archaic binary distinction is so ingrained in our society that people feel the need to categorize them in almost every domain of our lives.

I say this as a cis man so if my opinion sounds stupid I am willing to learn. I do have some close trans friends and what I feel is that they just want to be allowed to be themselves. Like, their search and discovery of their identity is of course super important to them, but at the same time they are just people. I discuss them now because of the topic, but in my head they are no different from any other person I know. Just let people be themselves and don't force boxes where they aren't needed.

Welcome, let this place be your grass to touch :). I am doing better than expected. Had a really bad time mentally but slowly recovering and finding joy.

Listening to good music (Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky, Dan Auerbach's wonderful solo albums (singer from the Black Keys).

Playing some fun games I got for cheap in the steam sale.

Watching an anime on Crunchyroll for the first time (The forbidden deduction of Ron Something Something).

What do you enjoy?

I am not from the US but always felt the world would be so different if Bernie was up against Trump instead of Hilary.

Is there a younger member of the Democratic party with a similar vibe to Bernie?

I am am continuing to extend the life of my 6 years old laptop for as long as possible, hopefully I will be able to buy a framework when it does eventually die on me. (It's a semi-shitty clevo model but I recently replaced the battery and it's kind of decent again)

The bad reactions to this seemed minimal to me, but my god the woman in the Galactic trailer is driving them nuts.

Which I really don't understand, because I find her look and vibe the good part of that trailer. The slurping drink and forced pop song on the other hand...

What are good starting points for the Deus ex series? I've got the original on Steam, but haven't really gotten into it yet, feels very intimidating every time I start. Should I just push through or are there other entry points?

Btw, I loved dishonored 1 but somehow stopped playing, thanks for reminding me to get back to it :).

I would describe myself as a pantheist: I see the existence of the universe as a whole and the multifaceted consciousness in it as divine. So science is as much a technical as a spiritual journey for me, and love / amazement / experience of the world seems the highest form of living.

I also feel that children often embody this in a very pure form, and it is only when society and social constructs kick in that we seem to forget our purpose and get all tangled up in imaginary goals and obligations.

I think it will be Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

I think it should be Astro Bot or UFO 50.

While technically correct, they do have it in China itself, it's a modified version called Douyin. It is more restricted, censored and tightly controlled.

I agree that it is a cyberweapon, but don't think that it's only used against foreigners, they use it just as much to observe and influence their own population.

Finally, I would like to point out that to a lesser extent this is also the case for a lot of USA owned social media and tech companies. Edward Snowden's revelations for example indicate this. While the extent of government control and influence is much larger in China, I wouldn't underestimate the influences of Meta, Google and Microsoft for example.

Journey of the Broken Circle! Played this on switch and it deserves more attention.

A short, side scrolling platformer about connection and love.

I've finally caved and paid 50 euros for a second hand copy of Astro Bot on PS5, and it is absolutely incredible. I know this game is only available to PS5 players, so I broadened the topic...

Let's discuss your favorite Platformers. What is your favorite game or series? What do you love about these games? Are there things you don't like about the genre? Feel free to share anything that comes up and react to other comments. Let's get the conversation going!

I'm in quite a bad place mentally at the moment, so I wasn't really feeling like making a post. But then I thought, I could combine this in the form of a special discussion topic:

Let's discuss your favorite Uplifting Games. What helps you when your feeling down or stressed out. What game series has comforted you in harder times. Are there certain genres that work better for you in these times? Feel free to share anything that comes up and react to other comments. Let's get the conversation going!

As the title suggests: I've had it with open worlds with dozens of things to do and checklists to complete. What are your favorite, delightfully simple, linear games?

This question is sparked by the discussion in the Final Fantasy thread, were I disclosed that I actually kind of like XIII because of its linearity. Other linear favorites of mine include: Half-Life series, Portal series, Uncharted series, some COD campaigns, Undertale, Journey, Super Mario 3D World, Plague Tale, Spec Ops: The Line

A shout out to A Way Out in the co-op catergory!

Another trailer that was presented at the recent State of Play. The art style and atmosphere look absolutely incredible to me!

This trailer was revealed during the recent State of Play. I really like the look and atmosphere. They clearly had a good look at Death Stranding, but I love that game so this seems right up my alley. What do you guys think?
