Around Germany and Greece there were other countries. They went by names like frugal four and PIIGS. They forced "austerity" and stricter working hours onto indebted countries to save their own banks.

The colours on this map show well that northern "productivity" is not about working hours, but about other topics that did not get addressed. Among these topics are also tax heavens (think the Netherlands) and money laundering (think Austria's special relationship with Russia).

So it was nothing more than poor political leadership without vision.

It's not a straightforward task. And it's controversial is you want to avoid multiple registrations.

It's been around for many years now and famously was used in the consultations for the constitution of Iceland. We also used it in Bulgaria back in 2013 and had a community of more than 3000 users, but it lost traction due to being ignored by politicians and controversial debates.

You can see more recent activity on https://www.citizens.is/ , particularly the impact and news sections.

In Italy the anti-nuclear stance was voted in a referendum in 1987, but they still keep trying.

I guess that could be a more objective way of looking at it: http://cdn.statcdn.com/Infographic/images/normal/20750.jpeg

Then it's just propaganda aiming to manipulate the German public.

Well, plebbit being text-only means exactly that any media content is being stored remotely on CDNs

In the last three months, the pace of the Russian army's offensive in Ukraine has been falling. In February 2025, the Russian army managed to occupy 192 square kilometres of Ukrainian territory. This is 4 times less than in the peak period in autumn 2024.

The OSINT project DeepState, which monitors the situation on the front line, has drawn attention to the occupiers' loss of momentum.

According to OSINTers, the current pace of the Russian army has already equalled that of July 2024. At the same time, the Russians are taking very heavy casualties as they try to advance.

Wow, not sure if you did something or it was there all along... But I used to search for it by language. And the language is not there anymore :D

But seriously, thank you.

Can somebody also make join-lemmy.org notice that our instance exists? Can't get it listed, even though we comply with the requirements for a while now.

If your area is not contaminated, I guess it's worth a shout.

Posts and comments are welcome in all languages from the region, and of course in English

We invite participants to benchmark systems for word sense induction (WSI) across multiple languages. Unlike traditional approaches, this task evaluates WSI without relying on predefined sense inventories, offering a more theoretically plausible framework for understanding word meanings.

Participants will be provided with:

  • A set of polysemous target headwords.
  • Sentences containing these words in diverse contexts.

The goal is to cluster the sentences according to the sense in which the target word is used.

A different set of headwords and contexts will be provided for each of the following languages: English, Czech, German, Spanish, Estonian, Chinese

For each language, there will be approximately 25 headwords with 1500+ contexts each.

Just check out [email protected]. Hosted on a Bulgarian instance, most content in English, open to all languages in the region.

The Black Sea is simultaneously a very fragile ecosystem and an important economical gateway. Many interests mix here, and this is part of the reason for the wars and protests that surround its shores.

This is a group for people interested in it, be it because they live next to it, or because they are inspired by its characteristics. Conversations in all regional languages are welcome alongside English.

Discussions in English or any Balkan language accepted. If in trouble, we'll resort to deepl.com

Ukraine awards Magnitsky-sanctioned Delyan Peevski from Bulgaria

In an extraordinary constellation of interests, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk awarded Bulgaria's most prominent post-Soviet oligarch for unspecified support

Peevski's affiliations with the Putin regime are so notorious, that he has been sanctioned in several Western countries by a legislation named after the victim of Russia's oligarchy Sergei Magnitsky.
