Yeah, we've got on-prem cloud hosting at a university, and moving away from VMware is an ongoing process. Still. Two, three years after the writing was on the wall. They'd rather pay the Danegeld.

Or they'll just pay the extra money and avoid all that.

Market cap? Which stock symbol is it? 😉

I've said it before - an insurgency in the Rocky Mountains would be an absolute nightmare for an occupier.

Linux has some advantages in that a lot of the basic stuff, someone from 1985 would pick it up pretty fast, I think. Commandlines are very conservative. I have scripts I haven't changed in 15 years.

Entering the lion's den to offer the lion a handjob and offer Alberta as tribute, more like.

The math is pretty simple. We're travelling at 25km/sec around the sun. You have to get that to zero to hit the sun. Getting to Jupiter means getting up to like 37km/sec (made up number). Way easier.

edit: I looked it up because it didn't feel right. Outer planets move SLOWER the farther out you go because gravity is weaker and they don't need as much angular momentum. So the math isn't quite as simple as that. :)

Seconds are already an SI unit. We'd have to redo every textbook, and overcome centuries of work.

I like right hand rule. Thumb in direction you want the bolt to go, out or in. Fingers curve in the direction you need to turn.

Yeah, which is why I added the note about cleaning power per unit volume. But it'd have to be a fair bit more powerful to make the effort worth it, I think.

We use maybe 50ml of Tide (so that'd be probably 100 loads) when doing our laundry, so if that's equivalent to like one tablespoon of the Borax mix, I could see it saving me $20 or so overall, if it's three times stronger.

So it'd come down to how much time I spend shopping and combining the mixture vs just buying it.

Mind, that's just the borax. Bar soap and baking soda are cheap but not free.

(edit: and before someone jumps on me about "baking soda", I was thinking of it in terms of decomposing it into carbonate in the oven. I haven't priced out washing soda)

A couple observations:

  • Sewing needs some kind of quality buff. The percentage condition boost you get from repairing is almost always partly wasted, and higher levels only increase the wastage.
  • The amount of effort needed to get to level 5 mending merits a much better reward. In Interloper, you aren't ever going to be leaving your gear to 50% condition before repairing. I don't know what such a buff would look like. Maybe you use less cloth when you hit level 5, or maybe you can repair your gear to 120% instead of 100%.
  • Sports socks are gold if you're just aiming for level 5. 0.10kg, and very fast repair time. Hoard them, haul them with you until you have level 5. You can consume a lot of cloth fast.

Couple of my favourites:

Any other good watches? I love this game for background atmosphere.

Cooking a moose and working on "Skilled Survivor", really enjoyed this screenshot from a cave in Bleak Inlet.

Also, I've found that if you really need a very fuel-efficient cooking method, having multiple fires going lets you use one stick for like 25 minutes of runtime, since stuff still cooks during "Embers" and pauses for a while afterwards. A pile of sticks can cook a ridiculous amount of meat by doing continuous relights among a bunch of fires. It's a lot of work, but if you're short fuel, it might be worth it.

Saw this while mapping in HRV. Very pretty.

TLD-adjacent. Maybe moose and bears should fight each other!

There's that one spot in PV in the birch forest where they both spawn. That should be a bit of a bloodbath. Also, maybe free meat?

Here's a perennial favourite: what features would you like added to the Long Dark, or what features would you like to see simplified or removed entirely?

(This is a decathread because we are too small to have megathreads yet)

(This might end up being my own personal gripe thread, so buckle up)

From a Youtube comment:

"Sadly the creator of this mash-up has passed away. His name was Erwin Beekveld and he died on 30th of march 2022 aged 52. Thank you for all the joy you gave us, Erwin. Rest In Peace"

Pour one out for an OG memelord.

Pepper-pepper-pepper asiago sourdough bread. 4% toasted and ground peppercorns, 20% asiago cheese, 1% garlic powder, generous pinch of Japanese shichimi (7spice) and red pepper flakes. Probably 85% hydration.

This is my unnamed sourdough starter blorping away on the counter in its charming green mason jar. About to go back into the fridge for two weeks.

Got kicked out of the building at work today due to this. Crazy.

Almost feels like I should tag this one NSFW.

Someone cut through all the cables on the Library microfiche station this weekend. Some people. :(
