Trying to get a lot of my scripts, libraries and tools working on Windows is such an exercise in frustration that it’s not worth the bother.

Tried WSL? It is decent.

now I just want things to work.

That's what I meant. Software which is made to run on Windows will probably work best when run on Windows, right?

Seriously, if you're so keen on being able to do things that only work on Windows, then even with Wine and all the other workarounds, it's just a bit of a pain in the arse not to just use Windows directly, isn't it?

My RSS reader (Newsblur) lets me do that too, to some extent.

  • Stopped using reddit, went here instead.
  • Intensified my Mastodon usage, winding down my Twitter activity.
  • Started using my own mail server for more than just a few tests.
  • Changed search engines a few times (I'll probably stick with Kagi now).
  • Reduced my subscriptions and cleaned up my RSS feeds.
  • Stopped doomscrolling (I subscribed to a weekly paper newspaper instead).
  • Started using Ulysses for writing. Works very well.

Primer:

  1. Usenet is for text, not for piracy. Just because you can share giant files over NNTP, that does not mean that you should. I mean, the IRC supports "file sharing" too, but there are much better protocols for that.
  2. The main hurdle trying to abuse NNTP for piracy is to find a Usenet provider that actually mirrors binaries. I am not aware of any free one, as it takes very much traffic and disk space.

Schlimm, diese autokratischen Staaten, deren Machthaber sich in die Pressefreiheit einzumischen versuchen. Russland und so.
