Opportunism indeed. Maybe he's thinking France needs any potential business allies in the future now that the US might be gone out of the picture, although the reconstruction of Haiti and building a consumption-happy middle-class there would take long time... If that's the case, it might be bound to remain a pale attempt compared to China showering investments into African and Asian infrastructure.

Far-right imperialist governments are ushering in right now across Europe despite the scarcity of, as you say, leftist policies... Maybe it's because it's not about horseshoe theory, opposites attract and all that, so much as: capitalists strip away the democratic facade whenever their infinite growth model hits limits and so they try to cut corners, decrease regulation - Trump's latest deregulations are a striking example of that.

Europe is running the risk of falling even further behind global digital market leaders like the United States and China. The EuroStack initiative aims to counter this trend by developing Europe's own comprehensive digital infrastructure. This industrial policy framework integrates technology, financing, economic development, political governance, sustainability and public interest considerations. An analysis by the Bertelsmann Stiftung, led by innovation economist Francesca Bria and an international team of experts, estimates that this transformation will take roughly a decade and require investments of around €300 billion.

I wonder why isn't Friendica more popular by now.

lemmy.world

Why, where is lemmy.world based?

Linux is becoming mainstream, the other two big OS happen to be closed-source and based in a country which is now becoming a dictatorship bent on declaring war on everyone. If you're in the EU or in China and you're still using Windows right now, you might want to be concerned about your security even if you're just a normal end user. It is widely known Microsoft mine users' data - and when it comes to that, Trump has been blowing up the EU-US Data Deal. Government agencies and companies all over EU are now scrambling to switch to EU-based cloud providers and other IT solutions. It's no joke: https://noyb.eu/en/us-cloud-soon-illegal-trump-punches-first-hole-eu-us-data-deal

Sadly, many people I know are staying there instead of figuring Mastodon or Friendica out.

Fun fact: if you mess up captcha verification (due to Internet connection or your human error) during account creation, your account gets instantly suspended and then you receive a shady email that is actually from Bluesky, saying you should send them via email a picture of your ID.

They’re not meticulous historians though. LGBTQ people were more accepted in the Roman Republic (and in ancient Greek) than today.

“Caius Julius Caesar: husband to all the wives, wife to all the husbands.” was a saying that my Latin professor taught us in school.

Being AMAB and bottom was stigmatized to the point their swearing system revolved around emasculation threats, so that's different from what the queer movement of today aims for...

Not to mention it's going to be common knowledge in 20 years from now that IS was designed by you know who to fuel Islamophobia.

If your own child was on the LGBT+ spectrum and was right now in the US, your take would have been way different.

I don't have much programming knowledge, however at this point I'm grateful if I can at least download my FB data - I haven't tried it yet and, honestly, I'm afraid they might ask for my gov ID. I never wanted to do that, as they tried to when my account, where my main name was my pen name, got busted for "fake name". Funnily, they didn't ask for ID anymore when I inputted my legal name! I hate them for doing that - but now I also hate Bluesky for suspending my freshly started alt account and asking for ID via email - which is just bonkers and discourages me from sticking long term to Bluesky. Which sucks cause right now there's a lot more activity on Bluesky than on even Mastodon, as far as I can tell.

Ok, this might be a dumb question, but is it really technically possible in any way - even a convoluted one, like manually downloading HTML pages from Facebook? - to mass import posts from one's Facebook into Mastodon or Friendica instead of painstakingly copying them one by one? I've got a 10+ year archive to port and it's a daunting task to go through them...
