Elections Canada has released this resource with some common bits of false or misleading content about elections on social media: https://www.elections.ca/content.aspx?section=res&dir=dis&document=index&lang=e

We plan on pinning this resource, and we are proposing the following rules:

  • Posts or comments with inaccurate or misleading information from this list will be removed, and users are encouraged to report them
  • Repeatedly posting such content will result in a ban from the community until April 28 (at a minimum)

So far we haven't noticed any serious issues, but we want to get ahead of anything that might come up

If U.S. President Donald Trump fails in his stated goal of annexing Canada through economic force, what would happen if he ordered the world’s most powerful military to invade?

Some experts and academics say it’s a notion too preposterous to even contemplate. But Aisha Ahmad isn’t one of them.

“When you look at the power (imbalance) between the U.S. and Canada, an invasion would immediately result in the defeat of the Canadian Armed Forces,” said the University of Toronto political science professor, who last month published an essay on the subject in The Conversation.

“But a conventional military victory is not the end of this story. It’s just the beginning.”

More than 360,000 customers are without power after an ice storm hit parts of Ontario on the weekend, according to the provincial utility Hydro One.

Officials say the outages have been concentrated in central and eastern Ontario.

The number of outages jumped on Sunday because of a problem with Hydro One's outage map, with outages not previously accounted for now having been added to the total.

I left out their subtitle because I felt it was too inflammatory and clickbait-like

During the election, and then once after to wrap-up, The Line has assembled a panel of partisans, but fun ones! People we know and like. They’re going to help us analyze the campagin, but they’ve also agreed to give some honest feedback to their own parties. Though we suspect we might have to force them into that each week. We have Amanda Galbraith, partner at Oyster Group, offering a Conservative perspective; Kim Wright, principal and founder at Wright Strategy, bringing the NDP angle; and Jamie Carroll, self-described “Liberal hack” and political strategist, making the case for the Red team.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre announced his second tax cut of the campaign targeted at investors Sunday, promising to exempt capital gains from taxes if the proceeds are reinvested in Canada.

"The current capital gains tax locks up investment in old assets, because selling them would force a big bill," Poilievre said in a statement.

"Allowing reinvestments without tax will unlock billions to immediately begin building, hiring, investing and growing."

The Conservatives say the tax cut, which would be available to investors from Canada Day until the end of 2026, will be made permanent if it's proven successful at driving economic growth.

This isn't about Canada specifically, but it feels like required knowledge given our proximity to the US

I was going to leave this CBC thing till after the election but after watching this video where this creator talk about how she get constant rape and death threats for making progressive content while traditional media platforms some horrible conservative voices reminded me how CBC portrays the news these days.

In one of the first article after the public caught on to Danielle Smith admission to foreign interference CBC published a story where they tried to legitimize her advocating for American officials to interfere with our election because she "just answered a simple question".

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/alberta-premier-smith-u-s-canada-election-interference-breitbart-1.7491318

Smith just answered a simple question, says analyst

Gitane De Silva, founder and principal of GDStrategic, a public policy group in Calgary, said Smith is allowed to have a personal political opinion and that, as a conservative, she would support a Conservative government.

"I think she was just answering a question that she was asked," De Silva said about Smith's comments in the Breitbart interview. "Just like President Trump has commented on who he'd rather work with, Premier Smith would rather work with a Conservative government in Ottawa."

Then they follow it up by downplaying Breitbart as merely Trump friendly.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/danielle-smith-breitbart-poilievre-trump-sync-analysis-1.7493168

Less so her weeks-old remarks to a Trump-friendly media outlet about a strategic Washington "pause" on tariffs to avoid boosting Liberal fortunes, and that Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre was "in sync" with the direction of Donald Trump.

People always talk about the Grammys, but it's really high time that we as Canadians start treating the Junos as what they were intended to be: an awards ceremony recognizing the best that Canada has to offer in music and NOT a means of advertising Canadian talent to the American market.

I don't generally agree with calls for candidates to resign, but I'm willing to make an exception in this case:

Conservative candidate Joe Tay was born in Hong Kong but immigrated to Canada. In December, Hong Kong police announced a bounty of HK$1-million – about $184,000 – for information leading to his arrest for allegedly violating a national-security law imposed on the former British colony by China. Mr. Tay runs a YouTube channel, HongKongerStation, that draws attention to continuing civil rights violations in Hong Kong.

In January, Paul Chiang, the Liberal candidate for Markham-Unionville, reportedly told a Chinese-language media conference that people should take Mr. Tay to the People’s Republic of China consulate in Toronto and collect the reward.

“If anyone here can take him to the Chinese Consulate General in Toronto, you can get the million-dollar reward,” Mr. Chiang said, according to Ming Pao, a Chinese-language newspaper.

...

In December last year, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly publicly condemned the Hong Kong bounties on people including Mr. Tay. “Hong Kong authorities are targeting these people for actions that amount to nothing more than the exercise of freedom of speech by standing up for democracy and human rights,” she said at the time.

Marcus Kolga, senior fellow at the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, who also lives in Mr. Chiang’s riding, said if the Liberals fail to remove Mr. Chiang as candidate, they risk becoming complicit in Beijing’s efforts to “intimidate and silence Canadians when it is politically convenient to do so.”

Mr. Kolga said Mr. Chiang as a former police officer and public official has a moral and professional obligation to protect Canadians from transnational repression. “His comments send a chilling message to members of the Hong Kong, Tibetan and Uyghur communities who advocate for human rights, freedom and democracy – many of whom remain extremely vulnerable to PRC repression.”

I found these while looking for an image earlier

After a month of fasting, worship and spiritual reflection, the holy month of Ramadan is coming to an end. Families across Canada and around the world are preparing for Eid al-Fitr. Chef Moeen Abuzaid from Arbequina shares with Ross Hull some of the delicious dishes that make this celebration so special.

A project celebrating Edmonton's Muslim community and deep-rooted connections to the land has stamped a place in Canadian history.

The Canadian Prayer Rug created nine years ago in Edmonton is now set to travel the country as the image on Canada Post's newest stamp released in honour of Eid celebrations.

So ive said a lot of shit about America since their dive into insanity. But I've ran into relatively normal people that now view America as a pure enemy. Like really calm people that have told Americans to their face that if they step into canada, with the intention of invasion, they will be met with a bullet to the head. And more then a few that legitimately know how to cause mass destruction. I don't think our neighbors to the south really understand just how fucked they made this relationship. I'm just understanding that my hot head position isn't too far from the norm.

I forgot to make this interactive, really what I'm saying is have other people ran into this? Where your gut reaction of let's end them as a country has now bled into the people around you that you wouldn't think thought like that?

To show support for Canada amid a trade war with the U.S., John Mackay says he tries to only buy Canadian products during grocery runs.

That's why the 81-year-old from Tillsonburg, Ont., said he's complained to Metro multiple times after seeing orange juice with pulp by Irrésistible — a Metro-owned private-label brand — with a red maple leaf next to the price tag on the shelf.

"Since when are we growing oranges in Canada?" said Mackay, whose home is roughly 115 kilometres west of Hamilton. "I was pissed off."

About 49,000 customers are currently without power in Ontario as an ice storm pummels parts of the province, Hydro One said.

The outages, which are concentrated in central and eastern Ontario, are being caused by tree limbs and branches weighed down by freezing rain that break and fall onto power lines, said spokesperson Tiziana Baccega Rosa.

She said some areas in the province, which are known as water-access only, may be without power for more than 24 hours.

Crews will need to either fly in by helicopter or use boats, which they cannot do until the storm is over, Baccega Rosa said. Affected areas may include parts of Parry Sound and Huntsville.
