How come the reporting is censoring the word?
Hate speech is censored to avoid normalizing language intended to encourage violence against the disempowered.
Oooh, nicely put.
Before your comment, I was thinking, "why not show the word? What word could it be? I'm a big boy and it won't hurt me," but ... after your comment I think I get it.
I may have to take this away and think on it, and thank you for the catalyst.
Fuck yeah. Personal growth for the win.
Not quite as sold on it as the rest of the internet. Personally. About 5-6 years ago, people started bleeping every single goddamn word that could in any way be construed as troublesome, triggering, or any word directly tied to a controversial topic.
"Kll, rpe, mrder, pssy, dck, a**hole, fck, cndm, scde, terrrst, rtrd, gy, fgt, gncde," I mean the list just goes on and on and ON & there's no real objective standard. Everyone enforces the asterisks on a whim, just how they feel that day, and suddenly an article becomes a round on Wheel of Fortune. I'd like to buy a vowel, please??
Then cvid hit, and everybody's talking about vccnes, the shot, the jab, the Fauci ouchie, etc. Vaxx. 🙄
Idk I'm just over it, I say the words. Except for "the n-word" and other overtly racial slurs. I can't fully articulate my reasoning behind this; like you, I'm going to have to think on it. But I just view it as political correctness, controlling words & controlling, restricting conversation about uncomfortable topics to game things in their favor. Hijacking Christian values like decency & submission, manipulating their emotions to railroad their thinking into the mainstream. Idk. I'm just...pro-free speech & anti-whatever the fuck you want to call this nonsense.
You can be pro-free speech, and not censor the words, and people will still be subject to the consequences of their speech. 🙂
It makes no sense. How people know the word that should not be normalized? I’m non-native speaker and after all blah blah in this thread I still have no idea what is the word. So if someone says it, I won’t even know I should call out that person. Don’t we normalize using slurs by softening reporting? If slur censored why would bigots stop using it if they are not properly shamed? All it does is just hiding issue from media with no effect IRL. IRL, US elected bigot
I'm going to send it to you in a DM. I agree with you.
Yeah but you could report without reporting the word if that is the case. You could keep the fact “the slur has been used” yet they go the extra mile to put it and censored it it. The reporting should just say the fact that a representative used a discriminatory language. I agree with you that we are on for 4 years of hyper normalization https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HyperNormalisation
It's pretty funny. The whole article is about her using a specific slur but it won't even mention what the slur was. Well done good reporting.
Right, I mean what the fuck is a trans slur?
Most likely tr**ny
That used to be the word I used for the tranmission of my car. Not any more. Bigots spoil everything.
There was a push years ago to stop using slave and master in IT. It did not work.
It kind of did. Git changed its default branch name to "main".
I think switching away from master/slave vocabulary is probably for the best. Getting rid of "master" in other contexts seems dumb to me because master has always had many uses not connected to slavery.
One that I surprisingly find myself agreeing with is replacing blacklist and whitelist with allow list and deny list, but not because I think using colors is racially insensitive; it's because allow and deny are more clear to people from different cultural backgrounds.
I never would have thought about cultural connotations of black and white. Yeah I can support that change.
They use that word in "family friendly" automotive related YouTube channels all the time without getting dinged for demonitization or bans etc. Maybe their moderators have learned context?
Maybe. Reminds me of that Tim Minchin bit about context.
Hate speech is intended to encourage violence and dehumanize others. Censoring the word helps build the social taboo that discourages the use of hate speech and helps isolate people who insist on using it.
Adults take responsibility for the effect their words and actions have on the world.
No censoring word is for cowards and assholes. Same as banning books. Stop censoring words were not children and no one hear is encouraging violence. Just trying to get the full picture. Just like I will call that GOP member who used the slur a fucking cunt.
Unless you’re trans, that isn’t your call to make. You don’t get to decide that it’s ok for people other than yourself to be exposed to slurs. Stay in your own lane.
Two of my children have trans boyfriends, and I am not advocating for us to go around insulting people with slurs. My comment was why are reporting sluring words. We should know what the bitch said. It's Congress we have right to know what they are saying and doing. Parts of lemmy seem to be turning into reddit. Next they ban people for speaking against fucking nazis or saying to punch a fucking nazi.
Cool, ask them how they feel about this
Speaking as someone who has been subjected to slurs and violence for who and what I am - why should simple exposure to slurs be where we draw the line? For me it was almost always about the hatred behind them; discussions about someone else's hate for me are going to hit the same whether the words are printed or not.
I don't think the word should have been censored here - either print it or drop the quote.
Nor do I think a report critical of someone using slurs is normalizing the use of them by quoting them. This isn't the casual use of slurs in everyday language as a synonym for bad.
You’re free to argue for the normalising of slurs people level against you. I won’t stand in your way. But again, you don’t get to decide that slurs used against other people should be normalised, when the impact of those slurs isn’t felt by you.
Cool. Not at all what I was arguing - too hard to see from up on your high horse?
But I'm just sitting here, genuinely wondering what the slur is she used, because I have no idea. I'm not well versed in trans slurs. Idk, news reporting should at least give me some way to find out... Like a spoiler tag to click on. Just... something.
It was tranny bro. It's not that hard to figure out you could have just googled it and figured it out lol
It's like these people weren't even hearing people cuss in the 90s. Oh yeah that's right, I'm old.
In the 90s, I barely even knew what the English language was.
Thanks. It was answered a bit further up. But it's still a bit weird that I had to come to the comments and even here nobody wanted to say it :D I think the "not knowing from the article" is still valid. Not everyone knows everything.
Well I could have been more descriptive with my reasoning sorry.
What i was alluding to was a way to potentially find the answer even if no one in the comments helps you. Say we were talking about a homophobic slur f*****. You could google "6 letter homophobic word starting with f" and the answer (for me at least) is in the first link to Wikipedia.
Hope that helps.
The internet is amazing. You see someone with their light coming on and showing growth and then you also see this guy in the same post.
Slurs are different and similarly not allowed on lemmy.
You aren't Lemmy. You are an instance of Lemmy, and do not speak for everyone.
We're* and here*, child.
You're wasting your time. I got banned from somewhere else earlier for talking about this. They are so unbelievably sensitive that you can't even type out a word in a conversation about what words count as a slur without them taking that very discussion as a slur. Zero thought from them as to how that might become a problem down the line.
They don't see any difference in saying a word while discussing the word vs using the word directed at someone with malice. They are incapable of understanding any nuance in language.
Grow up.
Yeah it makes me think of how Samuel L Jackson always has to defend Quentin for always using the N word. Reporters always wanting to say he is racist. They just don't get it. Its always about context. Even Stephen King uses that word in his books even today. Banning words or saying don't ever use those words is a slippery slop. We can't run around calling for freedom then ban words.
Unless its nazi then that the only exception in my mind. But that because nazi shouldn't exist. But I will just leave it alone. I am a supporter of the trans community, especially since I personally know several trans people and will fight for their right to exist. Anyone who thinks ill of me or thinks of me any other way don't jack shit about me.
Just like we can't say Voldemort right? I dunno in reporting they should report what is said. Reporters should be asking. "What do you have an issue with. Diversity. Inclusion. Or equity? Don't be shy get specific for me!" But they are all billionaires whores.
As an exercise to the reader, the above post was exercising the slur liberally in an attempt to claim it's "barely an insult"
Mods seem to think otherwise :)
Damn, what a fucking bigot.
One law.
