OP is German. The direct translation of stray is Streuner in German. A Streuner is not necessarily a pet without owner here, but can also mean "a pet wandering around alone". So this is likely lost in translation ;)

Yes you are right. Somehow i translatef stray with a free roaming cat, which is kind of wrong

I've never heard "Streuner" used for a pet, only for animals without owners.

But maybe you have heard about herumstreunern? I feel like the border is much more fuzzy than in English.

I'm with the other person, while I've heard herumstreunern, a Streuner is always homeless in my understanding. Might be a regional thing, idk

Yeah, that one I've definitely heard! I also feel like "streunern" by itself came up before for pets. But never "Streuner", that's reserved for strays.
