From Grunge to Gangsta Rap and everything in between! Post a song and let's talk about it!

Rules

  1. All aspects of the LW TOS apply.
  2. Be constructive and don't gatekeep. Music is highly subjective, and people have different tastes.
  3. If the source is YouTube, use the actual YouTube URL rather than a specific Invidious/Piped link. This prevents dead links as those go on/offline or break due to Google changes while also letting people's browser plugins, Lemmy clients, etc automatically re-write YT links to their preferred instances. Feel free to put alternate links in the post body, though.
  4. Put the link to the song in the URL field and not the post body.
  5. Submissions must be from the 90s (1990 - 1999) based on either recorded or release date. e.g. if it was recorded in 1999 but released in 2000, we're not going to split hairs over that; post away. Covers made in the 90s of older music is absolutely allowed and encouraged.

Posting Guidelines / Suggestions

  1. The preferred title format is Artist - Song Name [YEAR]
  2. If a song has a particular meaning or evokes a pleasant memory for you, feel free to share your story with it.

If you have other suggestions that would help grow the community and/or foster discussion, please feel free to share.

Caught these guys a few years back in a tiny venue in Reading with Hoobastank and POD, nostalgia overload! So glad they’re still going, love AAF. “These Days” is still a daily-driver for me.

Anyone wondering why they dropped off the map at the peak of their popularity, their tourbus crashed and their vocalist, Dryden broke his neck, taking years to recover, really sad :(

Wow, that sucks. I'm glad he made it, though.

Slick Theif, their cover of Smooth Criminal, was first released on their 1999 album Greatest Hits. It later gained popularity when it was reworked on their second album Anthology and released as their second single from that album in June 2001.

I have no idea where you got 1996

then let's go with 1999, I wasn't sure like I said in the other comment 😉

They've released a couple videos in the past month, and it confused the heck out of me, I watched them all, glad to see they're still going, this is still the best song in their library.

Love the monkey!

Saw these guys a few years ago. Made me a little sad. It was a very small venue, like a hundred people. The lead singer just looked defeated.

That said, legit everyone played very well. The singer has talent. Would see them again.

Also, Movies is a fun video.

Movies - Their best song on the album and still a banger today.

It's crazy how well that song translates to punk/grunge style

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Nothing about that was grung.

If we started debating what grunge is, we're gonna be here all day

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

No we won't.

Grunge is dead.

Wikipedia says "Alternative metal, nu métal, hard rock"

I love how many references to MJ music videos they fit into theirs. I chuckled when the mailbox lit up.

Fucking love Alien Ant Farm, this is hands down the worst song that they released and I will always skip this track on an otherwise outstanding album. However it is certainly also the track that catapulted them into the public eye more so, back in the day it was rinsed constantly.

To be honest they are one of the few bands where I really like the majority of their catalogue (ironically their biggest songs, this and movies, I personally think are the worst) so I'd just be posting their back catalogue. I just encourage people to go and listen to their albums.

Also how come you have tagged this as 96? The band formed in 96 and whilst they supposedly did this and other covers when they were coming up and a version of this called "Slick Thief" did appear on their 98 album release this version definitely came out in 01. I'm not too bothered, more curiosity over the choice :p
