Historical Artifacts

Just a community for everyone to share artifacts, reconstructions, or replicas for the historically-inclined to admire!

Generally, an artifact should be 100+ years old, but this is a flexible requirement if you find something rare and suitably linked to an era of history, not a strict rule. Anything over 100 is fair game regardless of rarity.

Generally speaking, ruins should go to !historyruins@lemmy.world

Illustrations of the past should go to !historyillustrations@lemmy.world

Photos of the past should go to !HistoryPorn@lemmy.world

There must be a political compass joke in here somewhere.

We need more naked men on our coins. I’d start carrying change.

Yeah, but can we not have the swastika on the back?

There is nothing wrong with the symbol. There is everything wrong with nazis.

The swastika never stopped being used as a symbol of divinity and spirituality in Indian religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

I’m an above-middle-aged white man who lives in America. The first thing people think about when they see a swastika is not a symbol of divinity and spirituality. It’s unfortunate, but it is reality.

That doesn't really matter, especially since we're talking about an ancient coin which existed ages before Nazism did.

Well, to be fair, in the context of this conversation, we are talking about bringing naked men back into vogue for modern day currency but not bringing back swastikas.

We need more naked men on our coins. I’d start carrying change.

Yeah, but can we not have the swastika on the back?

So it is kinda relevant.

It's usually a matter of observing context, and many people fail to do that immediately. Including myself.

The first thing that should pop into a persons head is why is there a swastika on a coin that predates the Nazis by a thousand years. One or two web searches would answer that question.
