I once watched a lady abandon her cart in the empty parking spot beside her. Then she got into her car and the cart rolled behind her car. She didn't notice and backed right into it.

Instant karma. Love it.

[–] TheCelticPirate@lemmy.world 63 points 4 months ago (2 children)

It really is a good test of a decent human being.

[–] CanadianCarl@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 months ago

I have to, to get my keys back. Because I have a loonie sized coin attached to my keys. And the carts require a loonie.

The real trolley problem

[–] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 36 points 4 months ago (5 children)

I normally return them all the way back into the store. Maybe I will be allowed into the upgraded "good place" without all of the forking censorship.

[–] stupidcasey@lemmy.world 25 points 4 months ago

Lol, that kind of moralizing is the exact thing that will get you into the censored good place.

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 17 points 4 months ago

No you get the forking censorship. Its bullshirt but you get used to it.

[–] tourist@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago

Homie your pizza gonna defrost

Take it to the designated trolley zone if it's closer

An uncensored Good Place?! Holy forking shirt balls!

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

I don't feel like I live in an area with particularly great people but it's pretty rare not to see someone return the cart either inside or to the corral. Regional cultures, I guess.

[–] Ephera@lemmy.ml 27 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Where I live, you have to put a coin into the shopping carts and you only get it back when you return it. Is this not a thing in, uh, Portugal? Brazil? Wherever the comic author lives...?

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 48 points 4 months ago (1 children)

In most places in the US it's totally not a thing, except at Aldi's.

[–] helpImTrappedOnline@lemmy.world 25 points 4 months ago (3 children)

And even then, some don't care about the quarter.

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 2 points 4 months ago

I heard from a guy living near DC, that a normal (i guess one pound?) bag of low quality ground coffee costs 20$. At this rate you have to have the cards take Benjamins to force people to return them.

[–] NormalPerson@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Blessings upon the tweaker at our Aldi

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

I don't care about the quarter, but in a different way. If I see someone getting out of their car, I say "You need a cart?"

Shit, I'd rather give it to them, than walk across the parking lot. Now if I don't see anyone, THEN I'll take it back. But I'd rather just give the cart to someone who needs it anyways. Screw the quarter! Oh no! I'm missing out on......30 seconds of earned income!!!

[–] BugleFingers@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Whenever I return to my car without a cart (vast majority of the time) I will find a random cart not returned and return it. Cause fuck you, that shit's going back despite your best efforts (or lack of any)

[–] limelight79@lemm.ee 7 points 4 months ago (2 children)

I swear this is a regional thing. Where I live now, it is extremely rare to see a cart outside the return. But I've lived in other places where it seemed like no one returned their cart, ever.

I think it's a peer pressure thing - once it's the norm, everyone just does it. But if people started breaking that, I'd suddenly start seeing carts all over the lot.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

Yup. Where I live now is a place nobody does it. They also see no problem with just stopping in a parking lot with a line of cars behind them. It's absolutely infuriating.

[–] JargonWagon@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (2 children)

Could also depend if it's an Aldi's or not, their system is awesome.

[–] limelight79@lemm.ee 2 points 4 months ago

Nah I've only been to Aldi's about 3 times in my life (nothing against it, they just don't have many locations near me). These are several different chains of stores in different parts of the US.

Dammit, correcting, thank you

"wee woo wee woo oh shit he's got a gun!" 🤣

I worked in a grocery store when I was a teenager. I didn't give a shit about people not returning their carts. It's my job, it's not like I'd rather face shelves than walk over to get a cart. Plus they'd usually send us out in pairs so we'd take advantage and shoot the shit while doing it, was a nice break.

Edit: I will downvote you because your personal experience and opinion go against my feelgood circle jerk.

[–] snail_hunter@programming.dev 16 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Abandoned carts occupy parking spots and can ram into cars and people. The issue isn't that it creates more work for employees

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

But they said "circle jerk", which automatically makes everyone else wrong. I'm sorry.

[–] monkeyslikebananas2@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

If the carts are taking up space, the store needs to hire more people to go get carts. I loved my cart fetching time when I worked at a grocery store.

[–] UrPartnerInCrime@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I used to work as a life guard when I was younger. I didn't give a shit about kids running around the pool. It's my job to give them bandages when they scrape their knee. It's not like I'd rather be looking at the pool. Plus there would usually be a hot sibling or mother so I'd take advantage and shoot my shot while doing it, it was a nice break.

[–] PM_ME_YOUR_ZOD_RUNES@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Comparing a lifeguard to stocking shelves at a grocery store, that's a fucking reach lmao.

[–] UrPartnerInCrime@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 months ago

Hey I did my job with great praise

I'm just saying it's the same premise. Yeah mine is more extreme, but that was the point. I could have picked a more fun and less serious job I've had, but I picked that one to show how dramatic it can be.

[–] monkeyslikebananas2@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

I’m with you dude. Only people who care about carts are self important people. I used to love walk the parking lot for 15-30 mins hunting carts. Best part of the job tbh.

[–] AllOutOfBubbleGum@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago

Cart Narcs approved comic.

[–] whostosay@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

Man fuck this guy. He didn't even call himself "Portugeese"
