Wel... You can use something smaller than a shuttle and decrease the doubling time of your fleet.
Just land on a planet, turn it into replicating torpedoes with a holographic warhead, and send them around at random. Guaranteed victory, with no chance for anything to go wrong with it.
This made me cackle more than I'd like to admit
