It's so great to have a good administration coming in that will have a good handle on the upcoming 2025 plague! /s

In before Trump pulls a Mao Zedong and declares war on birds.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 months ago

And to think he was trying so hard to save them from the wind turbines, and this is how they repay him...

[–] [email protected] 11 points 3 months ago

Maybe Newsom can see if he can blame this on PG&E then bail them out afterward.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago

They should publish a copy of the "playbook" this time on a government website so they can't dick around saying it doesn't exist again

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago

Yeah at least we had 4 years of a president who didnt pretend covid was over /s

[–] [email protected] 51 points 3 months ago (2 children)

He can start by banning raw milk.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 3 months ago

Lol who is downvoting this is one of the steps that must be taken.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 months ago (3 children)

Why do I get the suspicious feeling that there's a significant overlap between people who want raw milk and are against vaccines.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 months ago

The Venn diagram:

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago

There is - and this is where the "wings" of each party tend to overlap as well. The MAGA and the hippies start to agree on anti-science BS.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

That Venn diagram is a circle

Great and all. But can we get something below a state of emergency. Everything seems to trigger one of those these days. It kinda loses it's meaning when overused.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 3 months ago (1 children)

State of emergency just sounds scary but it's more about unlocking additional funds for issues. My state was under a "state of emergency" for drought. All it ment was some industries and communities could receive extra subsidies for water costs.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

Except it often also unlocks executive powers, not just funds. So yes, there should be a level that allows unlocking funds without everyone having to check if democracy is being suspended.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago

Ya but not for anything outside that specific reason for the emergency. For this example some of those added powers is so the government can cut some red tape to reduce the problem. The chicken industry in CA alone is worth billions of dollars, directly employees tens of thousands of people, and indirectly employees hundreds of thousands of people. Adding in the fact that it's also a public health emergency the governor using state police to restrict access to chicken farms isn't some authoritarian move to suppress the people. It's to keep nut jobs (PETA, Conspiracy theorist, etc) from getting sick.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

What inappropriate powers are available in CA

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

Idk about CA specifically. But even if none were available, it is still a term that is used for unlocking such powers on the federal level and in some states. So if CA does not have such powers, then just rename it I guess.

State of mild annoyance?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

We need a defcon system for emergencies.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

An Emergicon system, if you will

[–] [email protected] 33 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I don't think the impacts of this are being fully realized yet...like the stores here (Sacramento) are low on eggs, the zoos have taken the birds off exhibit, and I live next to a large wildlife preserve that's a huge bird migration path and they just like haven't been there this year. Those giant starling clouds were an annual thing for a week or so and they just didn't happen this year. It really feels like there's a LOT less small birds; the big herons and stuff are still visible, but like walking the preserve is noticeably quieter.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago

Just made me realize I haven't seen any geese this year. Normally they absolutely litter the pond near my place

[–] [email protected] 18 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Is it a multi species pandemic yet? I missed 2020-2021 so bad. I loved not being around people.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

Good for you. Shit cost me a few hundred thousand dollars and almost killed 2 relatives. Child

[–] [email protected] 13 points 3 months ago (2 children)

We got Mr. Really Fun At Parties here huh?

Never heard of Gallows Humor eh?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 months ago

It just wasn't funny.

It was angsty.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Your username states otherwise in the joking part so sorry, don’t believe ya

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

1.) You had a few hundred thousand dollars?!

2.) Almost?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Destroyed my business

They were in the ICU

Got any more brain busters? Only a kid would wish for another pandemic

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

I'm going to be flogged for saying this as well, but I don't understand why you're being down-voted.

I lost a lot of money being furloughed and was on the verge of declaring bankruptcy, and many old friends of my father in India died in that global cluster-fuck. Granted, there were many environmental benefits for our ailing biosphere, and I found many moments of peaceful solace as a result of not having to be in public, but average people were eviscerated by that virus on many levels.

I agree: despite the inevitability of another one, to wish for another pandemic is, at best, an idiotic, selfish, and angsty teenage opinion. Along with the obvious health risks, people now have even less trust in institutional health and scientific organizations, leading me to predict that the next one will be even worse because people refuse to think and learn nothing from the past.

Even worse, people regard their unbridled skepticism of expert opinion, research, and their own scientific ignorance as a virtue. We experienced the Dunning-Kruger effect at a global scale and will do so again because the average person despises humility and thinks they know everything about anything.

Kind of like a bunch of bratty teenagers.

IMO There’s quite a few folks on Lemmy that hate everyone and just wanna sit in their room on their computer. And starting a small business is not even in their realm of thought

Also it’s the internet so people say fucked up shit then say they were just joking if it’s not received

I don’t take things as jokes if they’re isn’t some attempt at being funny

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

As to why he is being downvoted, my experience in lemmy has shown me that people here are incredibly sensitive to rudeness (maybe this applies to other social networks, I wouldn't know). It's very common to see interactions like this, a person says something awful but they say it in a polite way. Then, someone who understands the awfulness replies with something like "wtf, this shit is awful because ..." and they get downvoted even though they are right because they weren't polite. And the most people just follow the number, like lemmings hahaha. Social networks are just awful to have meaningful conversations I guess.

As to the topic at hand, a part of me kind of misses the pandemic. Of course, the rational part of me understand that this is irrational and another pandemic would be awful. Specially because I lucked out in the last one and me and my family were all ok, but who knows what will happen in the next one. It would be incredibly dumb for me, or anyone, to wish for another one.

But it's hard not to miss some aspects of the pandemic, specially now that people in charge are forcing all of us to return to the status quo by force and coercion. For example, for me (an autistic person, though luckily I can mask very well) the silence during the pandemic was just life changing. Before then, I didn't realize just how noisy cars are and how much stress this adds to my life. It's hard for me to express just how much enjoyable my day to day was just because of that.

And here we are today, as a type this from my home I only hear car after car after car and it's incredibly annoying and incredibly exhausting. For me, it literally takes order of magnitude more energy and will power to get through my day now. And this is from my home, when I'm forced to go to an office or any other place is just so much worse. And I just have to suck it up and deal with it, society will just not accomodate for me because for most people this is not an issue.

And that's why you get a lot of people kind of wishing for another pandemic. For a lot of us, it was literally the first time that we saw a society that accomodated us like it accomodates normal people and it was just life changing. Of course, I don't wish for another pandemic. The amount of suffering it brought is not worth it of course, and the negative impacts were huge too (the social isolation for example).

But I kind of get it, at this point is very clear that society will just go back to the old status quo and we just have to suck it up. In fact, it seems to be getting worse and worse every day with bullshit RTO mandates, and bullshit laws, and people becoming increasingly intolerant to people who are different. And it's clear that nothing short of another pandemic will force society to acommodate us again. Quite the opposite, everywere it seems like goverments and corporations are just doubling down and quashing dissent. And when you put it all together, it's hard for a part of me to not miss the possitive changes I experienced during the pandemic. Of course, I also remember what it costed to some of my friends and neighboors and understand that this wish is not rational. But still, a part of me does miss it a bit.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Over one case?

Seems a bit overkill for the moment, no?

[–] [email protected] 28 points 3 months ago

There are currently 61 active infections in humans and 34 of those are in California. Our poultry farms have been devastated with millions of birds killed.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

They're as (corpo)left as Texas is right.

To the same extremes, just the opposite direction.

Truth hurts. Fuck Pelosi and Trump.

Fuck China and and the neo-communists on Lemmy too.

Threw a wrench in that reply, huh?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

You'd think you could deal with a flu outbreak in cattle without a state of fucking emergency. You'd also think that you'd not make claims about a flu humans aren't getting yet as extremely deadly to humans.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It's probably a legal thing involving interstate commerce. As the flue is spread also by trucks driving out of bird flue areas into non affected and this can then be regulated

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago

It may also have to do with overriding local and county officials, the state of emergency shit here is weird.
