Historical Artifacts

Just a community for everyone to share artifacts, reconstructions, or replicas for the historically-inclined to admire!

Generally, an artifact should be 100+ years old, but this is a flexible requirement if you find something rare and suitably linked to an era of history, not a strict rule. Anything over 100 is fair game regardless of rarity.

Generally speaking, ruins should go to [email protected]

Illustrations of the past should go to [email protected]

Photos of the past should go to [email protected]

If I could get one of these maybe mass transit wouldn't be so bad

Reminds me of this dude from early COVID

Do everything except wear a mask.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Probably the case but if I remember the lore it was very early on. Masks were gold back then

Even then I had sent some n95s from a large box I had to my parents and they said don't worry we wear gloves when we go out 🤦 I remember in the very early days a woman at the pharmacy chin strapping a mask that she was supposed to be wearing because of a high risk elderly person she was taking care of. I was flabbergasted that she was just wearing it on her chin like that. Then of course it became less surprising over time as people just don't understand how an airborne respiratory virus works.

It's not that they don't understand on an intellectual level, it's that monkey brains are terrible at dealing with invisible, statistical threats. It takes a strange monkey indeed to listen to their prefrontal cortex all of the time.

Yeah, the virus is in the fucking air, dude. That's why I always thought that "6 feet away" shit was stupid. When I'm in an office, and the guy two cubicles over has a cold, I still catch it. (And that's more than 6 feet.) It just didn't seem plausible that those particles would fall out of the air at 6 feet.

Every time I see this picture it reminds me so much of my dad. Dude looks a lot like him.

... That's also exactly the type of thing I would have made him do, had we been leaving the house at the time. Instead we locked in, had chickens, and survived off canned food reserves and eggs for nearly 3 months until more news had surfaced and there was a reasonable plan on how to stay safe.

The latest in social distancing technology!

That’s what stirred in my brain too - possibly connected to Siberia? Where have we all heard this from?

Maybe. Thanks. The mention of surrealists didn’t seem like news to me either so, yeah.

I hope this doesn’t end-up like the “8 spiders” urban myth where all references eventually trace back to a single original online article with no supporting evidence.

It is. I remember seeing this somewhere, and bear-deterrent was the stated purpose.

Yep this reminds me to Iron Maidens, attributed to medieval Europe but in reality they were made for kinky 19th century rich people that had a penchant for imaging kooky tortures.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 3 months ago

"Do you have ANY IDEA what HORRIBLE tortures medieval folk got up to!?"

"A sadistic vassal with a hammer and a pair of pliers?"

"No! Elaborate mechanisms! Chilling decor! Style! ATMOSPHERE!"

Just some minor defenses

Purpose is not unknown. These are for hunting lions.

Edit: or maybe it was bears. I read about these many long years ago.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago

Yeah i read about bear suits like these couldn't find the source!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago

Or maybe hedgehogs.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 3 months ago

I like the idea that it were the outfits of some industrial revolution heavy metal band.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Predator deterrent maybe? Bears or tigers.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 months ago

Or men

(Who won't stop touching you)

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 months ago

Some speculation is that it was for bear baiting. People do love their bloodsports.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Purpose: you work in an office with people who refuse to acknowledge personal boundaries

[–] RamblingPanda 7 points 3 months ago

Needs longer spikes. Make it a porcupine!

[–] [email protected] 14 points 3 months ago (1 children)

That's the Armor of Thorns that Kirk wears!

[–] [email protected] 13 points 3 months ago

This suit is on display at the Menil Collection in Houston. Totally surreal to see it in real life, especially as part of a surrealist exhibit

When the answer is unclear, it always ends up having something to do with sex.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 months ago

Used in rituals of fertility

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 months ago

Sure, bare-knuckle fight it is...

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 months ago

Kinky suits

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago

Wear this while holding a free hugs sign

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago

What a couple of pricks!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago

In Europe you say? The purpose would then definitely be a sex thing
