What is Cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk is a science-fiction sub-genre dealing with the integration of society and technology in dystopian settings. Often referred to as “low-life and high tech,” Cyberpunk stories deal with outsiders (punks) who fight against the oppressors in society (usually mega corporations that control everything) via technological means (cyber). If the punks aren’t actively fighting against a megacorp, they’re still dealing with living in a world completely dependent on high technology.

With Blade Runner 2099, Tron: Ares, and a new GitS series all coming in 2025 I'm curious which franchise will always keep you coming back for more, even when you know each new entry is progressively worse than the last (looking at you, Terminator franchise).

Personally, I'm always ready for more Deus Ex and I'm disappointed that the next game is already cancelled. Also, I'll always come back for more Watch_Dogs. Dumb as it may be, I love that series.

So what franchise are you always excited to hear is still alive?

GitS first movie and Arise, for me.

Arise is good as well!

Tron and GitS are actually two of my favorites. Their aesthetic captured me at a young age and I’ve been hooked since. The Expanse was a really good, real-feeling semi cyber-punk series (books and show).

I feel like GitS has a better track record and is more likely to be good. But a new Tron movie that throws away the previous storyline and stars Jared Leto? I'm setting my expectations pretty low.

I totally agree on The Expanse. Great story, both books and show. The Belters were a good example of cyberpunk in space, even though that wasn't the focus of the story.

I didn’t even know that’s what they were doing with the new Tron. Count me disappointed.

I've had The Expanse on the backburner for way too long, really need to get to the show and books!

As good as the show is, and it’s reallllly good, the books are better. You’ll probably benefit from watching season 1, then reading as you’ll get a great visual aide to you mind’s eye as you read. Don’t skip the novellas either, they are great.

I don't have a mind's eye, but I do like reading the books before since you get more detail and context for the show. I put off watching the show so I could read the books, but at this point I might as well start considering how many books there are...

Not so much “ongoing” yet, but I really liked Cyberpunk 2077 (game and anime) and I hope they continue that universe.

Def not ongoing but by far the best cyberpunk game I've ever played was MacSyndicate. Old school, kind of more of a bit management game, where you are running a criminal enterprise in competition with other criminal enterprises on a path towards global control.

There is a remake that I played but it really missed the spirit, where in the 90s version the 'Agents' were somewhat independent and you really just supervised, in the remake its much more like having a squad where you have to take pretty complete control over each agent to get them to be effective.
