Is "someone bought a Steam Deck" a newsworthy headline?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Have you bought a steam deck?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

Depends on how you spin the narrative

Title is misleading: she is now a Steam Deck owner, but we don't know if she installed Windows on it or not.

I honestly think she doesn't know or care about the Deck's os.

maybe not her but someone in her entourage... We don't know. And even if she kept SteamOS that doesn't makes her a Linux gamer either. Saying this would mean Playstation gamer are BSD gamers (which seriously I never heard anyone saying it).

Wow, so she is a pure Unix gamer, since she plays on a PS5 and has a Macbook and has a Deck. Don't know what phone she has. Is iOS based on BSD as well? Ah, damn, forgot that she has a Switch.

But seriously, since SteamOS is basically a pure Linux distribution and all the things that work or don't work on it also work or don't work on most other Linux distributions the same way, I'd say it is just Linux gaming.

Or is it only Linux gaming when it comes from the Linux region of PC snobbery?

I agree she adds to the Linux user count numbers on steam that's all that maters also BG3 works great on Linux

sorry sarcasm won't help you on that one: why OS naming only matter when you decide it matter? Especially when you really don't know what OS is installed on her device (As I said, you don't know the computer knowledge she, her family or her friends has)? What is the link between being a young female actress and the computer knowledge she has?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

How does OS naming matter at all? Why is SteamOS not a Linux but OpenSUSE, Arch, Debian, Ubuntu, etc. are? SteamOS is literally based on Arch. Can't get much more Linux than that.

The way she and her gf handle themselves on stream and with technical stuff neither them nor their family and friends know very much. They actually said in this stream that they have to explain to family and friends what streaming is.

Getting sent Elgato gear and taking very long to set that and OBS up on her MacBook is a pretty good indicator that they don't have anyone with the technical knowledge in the vicinity.

No, I don't "know" what OS she's running but I can make a very educated guess that she keeps her stuff in their default state. And nothing has to do with her being young, female or an actress. She is actually the technically more capable and interested one in her relationship.

SteamDeck + SteamOS has the same compatibility and playable games as ArchLinux/Fedora/Ubuntu/desktop linux.

PS5 and FreeBSD do not have any overlap there. If PS5 had no proprietary layers on top of BSD (or the layers were otherwise accessible to the public and could be installed on top of BSD by end users), then you would be right in a way.

But any game released for SteamDeck, I can run on a linux desktop without any special tweaking, so they are related enough. Any game released on PS5 will not run on a BSD desktop, so clearly they are not related in the same way.

SteamDeck being popular and mainstream means that more games work on SteamDeck, and more games working on SteamDeck means more games working on Linux. (Another aspect which is not true of PS5 and BSD).

So having people in the industry, who will potentially be involved with the studios, having (and enjoying) a SteamDeck means studios will hear things like "I hope I can play this on my SteamDeck" from people involved in the creation of games ... which helps push forward Linux gaming. Even if only a little.

They're totally BSD gamers

Entourage I think you over estimate how much voice actors get paid is she poor probably not but she is not a movie star with millions of dollars to blow on an entourage.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They regularly joke on stream that she's a millionaire because her IMDB or Wikipedia page or so says so.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

Yeah people don't make those jokes unless that is laughably untrue

she worked on BG3 and we know from making of and interview that the game was made without boundaries between services, so she spent years with people who have the knowledge to install a windows on a steam deck. Same thing happened with Anna Demetriou who worked as a voice actress on Star Citizen so chance are high that this actress made a friend or two at Larian Studios...

But the question why would she BG3 works great on the deck and unless she is playing a shitty live service game with kernel level anti-cheat there is no need for it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's....not Shadowheart, dude.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Correct, it's a link to a video with Shadowheart's actress.
